Why Was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 SO AWESOME?!

- Modern Warfare 2 was the big turning point in the Call of Duty series for many fans. While COD 4 was unanimously acclaimed and well-received, MW2 did not enjoy the same level of praise. So what's the deal? Was this game nothing more than a product of it's time? Or is there some secret formula to the franchises success hidden away?
Only one way to find out...

What I love the most about COD MW2 is the insane variety of scenarios. Rather than urban/woodlands/beach/_somewhere in Russia_ environments as it was staple for... every shooter until then, on MW2 you play in the frozen desert, African jungles, airports, oil rigs, airplane boneyards, countryside villas, and a fucking WAR TORN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
_somewhere in Russia_ killed me .
That part in DDC was one of the best parts of the series with just how tense and brutal it was.
word. I had a FPS party at my house. We played this and killzone 2 (which is excellent too btw) but everything is either grey or brown industrial environements. MW2 had huge variety. Killzone destroys it from a rendering engineering standpoint but modern warfare 2's variety was way better. More modes , better multiplayer , just all around great variety
It took a page out of socoms books. They did it first for sure
The voice actors in this game were on point. Watching this makes me want to play through all these games again
Old Price>new Price.
Modern Warfare 2 can best be described as Micheal Bay done right
Yep
I think MW 2 is more directed by Christopher Nolan, while MW 3 is directed by Michael Bay because it has more explosions and the story is meh. That's also the time when Frank West and Vince Zampella were absent. MW3 doesn't have the oomph compared to the previous two. Where's the battle on Moscow anyway?

The things I remember the most in MW2 was always having a "nemesis" in a lobby. The guy which you (for no reason) made your rival and killing him gave that extra feeling of accomplisment. And because most lobbies would stay with almost the same players you'd keep that rivalry going, even though it was only in your own head.
Also the fact that every map naturally created this "hot spot" that you'd fight over every game, and it was a different place every time.
And then they added SBMM and now every player is your rival and hunting you down
yeah the spawn system was made that way so freaking all those battlefields were created in each map. All the MW2 maps where so unique and amazing gameplay and style.
so true, when you got killed you went back for revenge and often the guy was waiting for you there for a rematch.
That would actually be a cool idea for a COD game or something similar: a mechanic or mode where it's the usual deal, but there are designated rivals for each team, and you get bonus points for killing your rival.
This is so real. Like a guy who was very similar to your skill level who you'd come across several times and be about 50/50 with kills and deaths.
This game is so immersive and good. Takes me to the days when Activision actually cared about their fans and games and it was not all a money game 😭
Activision was always about the money first. they just had fewer ways to capitalise on it then.
@@jamesick true
@@jamesickYeah, the way devs made money then was having a really good game to sell map packs for. There's no way to go back to that
it wasn't Activision who made the game, but Ifinity Ward. And if everyone just had a brief look a the credits at the end of the game, everyone would know that the creater of the original CODs and Modern Wafare series (West and Zampela) where fiered by shithead Kotick 6 weeks after MW2 realesed. Why has COD became so miserable? Here you have your answer. Why did a have 3 years of shitty jetpacks ? Because West and Zampela (and all the original devs) where fired and wanted to creat a new inovative game (Titanfall) and so shithead Kotick just had to saturate the market with a pale version of it.

one of my favorite things about the COD MW series is that they actually show you who the protagonists and antagonists are based on their colored subtitles. For example, you can tell who the protagonists and good guys because they have the green color. But in Black ops 3, all of the character's subtitles are red
Yeah, it's a trait of the old games that died down later. I really liked it.
Not just Black ops 3, every Treyarch game
The green titles are only in Infinity Ward games
Treyarch is lazy
"ENEMY AC130 ABOVE!" struck terror in the hearts of so many
basically because you didnt had time to get to cover you died always instantly when hearing this, especially when you were on a killstreak yourself
Or in Black Ops when you heard either "enemy dogs" or "chopper gunner inbound", you were like "oh fuck".
@Honkeynuts I find myself being woken up from night terrors from that noise
Still getting PTSD flashbacks

I wish I could go back in time and play MW2 back at its peak.

@@Paradox2o9 i kinda agree with you there. Even though Bo was fun and i had friends still playing it right after mw2/3 died out, it wasnt the same. In its peak 2009-2011 it was absolutely all mw2-mw3 man. I remember the changes to sniping and overall speed of the gun fights from modern warfare to the black ops series is what made my friends slowly drift away. then when ghost and Aw came out, most of us had already grew out of Cod, due to the repetitiveness.
People still play this 🤷
My buddy who’s never played the campaign told me he thought the mission title “No Russian” was entirely symbolic because Makarov already knows you’re an American. In the remastered campaign, the whole crew is even death-staring you before the elevator opens. 🤯 And I thought it was just cause it’s a cool sounding command, like Order 66
Makarov did know thr CIA guy was American.
However he meant no speaking russian so people think it was Americans attacking (hence why he shoots your character and leaves him there at the end)
I honestly think the EMP was probably the best part of the campaign, it felt like it hearkened back to WaW by focusing on an atmosphere and the movement and care that the soldiers have to take, rather than just being in full chaotic battles
That's my fav mission too, but it was actually a nuke. There's a case in real life where a similar thing happened with a nuke and it had the effects of an EMP for several hours/days

16 maps at launch, jeez, back in the days there was no need for dlc's
Yet the DLCs were still so amazing. Remember the fucking CIRCUS
There was 2 map packs they're like $15 and got like four maps so there's was 8 extra maps
Yet another reason why my newest console is an old white 360. The amount of stupid that's gone into the gaming world is ridiculous, hence why game companies like EA have fooled players into thinking it's normal and legitimate to pay over $100 for a console game with a bunch of DLC, DRM, microtransactions, and other nonsense.
I stopped buying DLC after COD4. If it was a free map pack, sure. But if it was something else? Nope. @DigitalDyslexia And no, most of the paid DLC I downloaded was not amazing or worth it. The only DLC I remember being worthwhile was one of the map packs on Halo 2 that had the huge ice level.
@@encycl07pedia- I agree, nowadays paying 60$ for a game is like getting the lite version. Remember those old shitty iphone games for 99 cents that had a "lite" free version with ads/less content?
@@steak1394 I never used iOS and only ever paid for one Android app and it was worth it. Pretty much every Android game I ever played was free with ads.
Honestly it feels more like the PC gaming business model of things like online season passes/subscriptions per game, forced patches, Day 1 patches, online activation codes, DRM, etc. has leaked into/become popular in the console gaming world.
The paradigm shifted to instead of someone owning a game, it's more like someone owns a license to play a game and that license can be revoked at any time for any reason. It's really, really pathetic how much greed has impacted gaming. The companies like EA, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc. that treat their customers like cash cows that need to be milked for every little piece of content.

It's not like potential shooters play video games anyways. It's just the scapegoat the media uses to protect themselves from the fact that they perpetuate the cycle of violence themselves by making the shooter a celebrity like they're the new Charles Manson. And now we're so desensitized from domestic terrorism because of CNN, FOX and MSNBC playing it on loop 24/7. And of course they won't admit that these violent video games are the tag, pick-up basketball, and soda shop social of the 21st century and that they're really just waiting for the next school shooting to milk the watch time and get their pay from corporations putting ads on their networks, and politicians trying to push their agendas saying they can stop these tragedies.

No Russian is far more important to the plot given is, quite literally, the only terrorist act we SEE Makarov commit in MW2.
Films have a rule that says "Show, Don't Tell." Video Games should have a rule that says "Play, Don't Tell."
By putting us in the shoes of Joseph Allen, a soldier who by Shepherd's orders had to go along with the No Russian incident, we the player are placed in a scenario similar to him. We're just following orders. And thus the moment Makarov kills Allen serves as a genuinely shocking and sad moment. We think "we did all that... Just to die." Its a very powerful scene.
Secondly, because its the only act of terrorism we witness, this makes Makarov a much bigger threat than if we had heard about it through dialogue and helps us become invested in the story.
I could go on talking about its thematic significance within MW2 but i think this is enough to explain why this mission is important.
Btw, love the videos Act Man.

and Shepard burning Ghost and Roach is something that will be seared into my mind forever, that cut me deep.
I remember my first and only nuke in MW2. At the time I was 11 maybe and gave up on getting the nuke because of losing so many games and getting my streaks cut short. I decided to switch the nuke for an EMP instead so I can at least reach a high kill streak, I tried and failed to even reach that so I turned off the game and went to bed. The next day, My older brother played the game and hung out with his friends from school while I was gone to see a friend for the day. I back on later to open up the game again and played Team Deathmatch on Derailed. I was doing well, really well. Went from harrier strike to a chopper gunner really quick and the kills were coming in fast. Thinking to myself "Man I should be getting my EMP soon, the chopper gunner was 11 kills". But the EMP never came, and it dawned on me: My brother switched it back when he was playing with his friends. Realizing this I went hard and racked up the kills to see it through. Lo and behold the legendary sound with Ghost saying his iconic line. The match ended with 6800 to 2700. This is one of my favorite moments in gaming.
My loadout was as follows:
UMP45 with suppressor
SPAS-12 with foregrip
semtex and stun grenades
Scavenger Pro
Stopping Power Pro
Commando Pro
Pain killer death streak

The fact that CoD included No Russian in the game shows how much the world has changed on 10 years. That mission would never happen today given all that has happened since 2009.
Makes you wonder if it's gonna be included in the remaster, especially with the latest shitshow in NZ.
@@By-s True it's just a game, who cares if we "offend" victims and people who would never buy it.
It could happen today and there would actually be far less controversy. There was so much at the time that they had to add the option to disable it in game. It would be pretty cliche today but back then it was shocking.
Some guy yep like having a robotic female in battlefield
@@perc30 There isn't even one in the game tho.
i spent so many hours just playing local multiplayer with my 3 friends on rust. That map was sick. This video bought back a lot of great memories. Good times! :)

Absolutely spot on with every detail. Explains what made this game soo enjoyable compared to

Failed to mention the absolutely amazing music
SXQX7 Hanz Zimmer (the composer who made the music for Mw2) is a god among men.
damekids, better than Marty O’Donnel?
He actually composed the entire soundtrack while Zimmer did the main theme.
Came to the comments just to say that
This soundtrack was one of my all-time favorite video game OSTs ever. The emotion in the music was so amazing. I wish other cods would follow up on it. NOT just having a killer multiplayer theme like BO4 (God Bo4s theme is amazing)
Best thing about MW2 for me, is living in Prince George VA near Fort Lee, and that's where you're running through the neighborhoods fighting. My brother's gf woke up when he fell asleep playing the game, woke up to the warning of an invasion of Prince George, she freaked out, called her mom/ posted on FB. LMAO loved that game but I'll always remember her doing that.
Another aspect you touched on which is so underrated was the introduction of killcams for game (or round) winning kill. I started as a normie just grinding levels but after my first cross map no scope, i was hooked. The possibilities of what made a good killcam ranged from pure luck to 100% skill and all the trolling in between made the game perfect for montages of all sorts.
My dad played this game for 10 solid years, even when his parkinsons made him a bit of a team killer he would keep playing (or at least tried)
Is your dad still alive or at least ok?
Yeah man? How is he? My dad got diagnosed with it so I’m wondering
What a Chad
Is your dad ok? Like is he alive?
Good luck to your dad

there were so many memorable moments that were like living part of a movie. that one scene when you're in the chopper and the guy hands you a mag and says, last one - i swear i got goosebumps from the black hawk down reference. defending burgertown? playing wolverines? hitting the green flares a la the rock...and the writing with the twist (rip ghost)...man, my jaw was just floored. i loved this game and still do.
I love watching this guy, he reminds me of the old critic youtubers that reviewed modern games (or modern from that time, nintendo wii, ps3 and etc)

Glad I found the channel to relieve some of those stress free days in hindsight. I’m 26 now. The game came out when I was in 8th grade so I think I was 13 at the time. My mom went to the midnight release to pick the game up for me so I could play a little. My moms the best. I felt like the coolest kid all day at school telling everyone how awesome the game was. Man what a chump I was. Great times.

10:12 Funny you mention that, in one of the newspaper clippings in the Makarov Safehouse level says that the Russian Government accepted that Makarov carried out the attack, but it also says that the US had armed and supplied him. The major point in the whole incident was not whether Makarov had been involved in the attack, but whether the US had been supporting it, which, from the weaponry used by Makarov & his crew, serves as evidence. Allen being apart of the attack was just the icing on the cake, and a very lucky opportunity for Makarov to use his corpse as more evidence to the Russian government.
Yep and especially when the ultra nationalist party have been elected since the end of COD4 and all the russians people hates americans and idolize Zakhaev.
Right. They used NATO weapons on purpose.
Well shit, that makes a lot more sense. Still, that should've been slightly more explained in a cutscene or something
@@TheActMan I will agree with that point, it was explained a bit poorly. I guess it's just one of those things you have to do a bit of digging to figure out. Also, holy shit I actually got a reply from the man himself.
+The Act Man Hell, Makarov is literally introduced by Shepherd as “trading blood for money” but I mean that’s not true, he’s not in it for the money, he’s in it for the Ultranationalist cause. So why does Shepherd say this?
It’s because he’s setting Makarov up to just be a gun for hire, so when the russian authorities find his involvement, he could just say he was paid to do it.
Still watching these essays, it gives me goosebumps because you speak right out of the most of our hearts…
