The Amazing Moment Baby Elephant Orphan, Phabeni Meets Lundi and Suckles From Her

  • We were holding our breaths as Phabeni rushed over to Lundi for this meeting! Lundi surrounded him immediately, protectively reversing toward him and touching his trunk with her own. It was an absolutely heartwarming introduction - the second for Phabeni, after the little bull first met the older bull, Jabulani trunk-to-trunk.
Lundi was clearly excited by the occasion as you could see her streaming from the temporal lobe, on the side of her head, which happens during a state of heightened emotion. She seemed to be uncertain of what to do at first as this new little baby presented himself in front of her, but we believe the presence of Jabulani helped to keep her calm. Lundi shares her section of the homestead at HERD with Jabulani, where she sleeps at night with her son Mambo too.
Our hope is that Lundi might take Phabeni in as her second son, to help raise and guide him the way she did Khanyisa. But you never know... during these introductions another cow might show interest in taking on this role as mother to the newest orphan at HERD. Time will tell. For now, we are blown away by the bravery and coolness of little Phabeni. He is so clever and adapts quickly to each new situation he finds himself in. He seems very ready to be part of this new elephant family!
We are fortunate in this case as he has not needed as much rehabilitation as albino baby, Khanyisa needed, and so this introduction stage has come sooner and faster. Well done to our team on the ground and to these three elephants for showing the world that families can look different from the norm, that we can build our own families, and that no one ever needs to be left behind or alone.
You can help us to support Phabeni by adopting him and contributing to the many expenses of his care: herd.org.za/animal/phabeni/

And Lundi, sweet Lundi, is once again so warm and lovely to the orphans and was more than happy to comfort Phabeni. Jabulani's calm demeanour is always reassuring, too. Phabeni's personality is shining brighter day by day, and I can't wait to see more of his development! Thank you HERD!

The great thing is that female elephants exist to defend and extend their breeding herd; successfully raising the calves is their raison d'etre. Even this orphan herd has encountered and managed jealousy before. i.e. Pisa. Khanyisa will be a more extreme case, I suspect, but well within the capacity of Tokwe & co to manage. If Kumbura does not transfer allegiance, her love alone should be enough to gradually reassure Khanyisa. And if Limpopo or Pisa should decide to give allomothering Phabeni a good go, then God help Khanyisa if she plays rough. @@hisservants8003

Very beautiful to see the orphan be accepted. He is no longer an orphan but a member of the herd. Elephants can teach many humans what life is to be. Compassion, acceptance, protection, and love. Many other qualities they can teach us.

Actual elephant herds are matriarchal led by an elderly female with males leaving when they grow up. While male elephants are largely solitary, the elders periodically mentor the younger bachelors which is essential to they learning good behaviour.

This introduction was even more exciting than I had hoped! The way Lundi smelled and greeted Phabeni, then immediately turned around to protect him was awesome! Moving her leg forward so he could suckle, and the way he instinctively trusted her enough to do so, made my heart blossom with love. ❤ He seems so tiny next to Lundi and Jabu, but he knew he was safe with them. His original herd must have loved him very much and protected him. Thank you HERD, for giving little Phabeni care and a family to love.

One more comment if I may. I would be willing to bet my entire life savings that Jabu has a built in instinct about the new orphans that come each time because of what he went through. In fact, I would say that for Lundi and all the rest of the ele's who have welcomed them. Their humans do so much of course, but I would bet you that elephants sense and even instant understanding of the new babies past and what brought them here is ALREADY KNOWN without anyone telling them, showing them, etc and even if they weren't backed up by the wonderful carers, they would know PRECIOUSLY what to do with the babies and welcome them to their forever home. Jabu's instinct having walked the path himself is better than most humans at this point.
