A Whirlwind of Elephant Commotion as Heavy Rain Pours Over Lundi & Phabeni’s Meeting

  • Part three of Lundi and Phabeni’s introduction is full of activity as heavy rain starts to pour down on everyone.
    Read the full story by Adine about this introduction here: herd.org.za/blog/elephant-orp...
    Adine recounts the tale of the rains:
    The weirdest rain storm started. It rained on the one side of the homestead and we could see and hear it on the roof, but we were still dry without any drops. Soon the rain started on our side of the homestead and poured down in buckets over the whole homestead. On the other side with the herd, who were out foraging in the bush, Sebakwe got spooked and ran, with Somopane and Tokwe. The three ran towards each other with loud trumpets. It upset Lundi and we decided to take Phabeni back to the orphanage to prevent any negative experience during the integration. Lundi twirled around and Jabulani also got a bit uptight. Phabeni was standing in the middle and unsure of what to do, who to follow. We battled to hear each other above the sound of the rain on the roof. We tried to lure Lundi with fruit and pellets, but she would come and then reverse to Phabeni, who was not sure where to go, who to follow.
    There was a bucket at the gate with sweet potatoes and apples, waiting for Phabeni. With a bit of disorganised chaos, Lundi followed Joshua to the orphanage to walk Phabeni back home. Phabeni could not get past her though and it took some effort before he could enter the orphanage. With all the trumpeting and rumbling, he was upset and wet and cold, pacing up and down the orphanage. As it was sooner than anticipated, his milk bottle wasn’t prepared and while nursery carer, Khensani prepared his bottle, Joshua and I called and finally convinced Phabeni to come to the nursery for warmth and comfort.
    Before putting on his blanket, we dried him with a towel. We were concerned that he could get a cold, especially with the stress of integrations, you can never be sure of the impact it can have on such a little elephant. How much are they able to absorb safely? Rather be safe than sorry.
    In the distance, we followed the commotion as Jabulani and Lundi joined the rest of the herd. It was clear that they were not upset by the integration of Phabeni but about the rain and the storm, which was a relief as we are working towards a smooth transition for one and all.
    Phabeni drank his milk and in the meantime, Herman sped off in the rain with the wheelbarrow to fetch some bedding for the clean nursery. The rain interfered with us, but we needed the rain and were happy with the buckets pouring down.
    Lammie and Spotty joined Phabeni and soon, the little elephant took a nap in his clean nursery on his fresh bedding under his new Springbok ‘blankie’.
    We are progressing, little by little, and in the end, all went well. We couldn’t be more grateful!

      @lindawalker8312, Adine's concern for Khensani--in this case--and for all of the staff under her leadership, is Adine in actuality taking great care of herself. That is what a good leader does: she recognizes and cares for those under her leadership, and by doing so, she is actually taking care of herself since they are the ones who have her back, her welfare, and oftentimes her safety in their hands and hearts during much of her given time at HERD while we, as armchair watcher/warriors, sit and worry needlessly and openly from our homes about the great white warrior's welfare. Adine is a valuable, needed, and much-loved HERD asset to be sure, but then so too are the men and women who help her make it all work 24/7. I remember a time not too long ago when the elephants and the white guides/photographers/doctors were always referred to by name while the non-white men who daily cared for the ellies (and the other non-whites who added daily substance to HERD) were not even considered, in most cases, important enough to be called or considered by their names. Many viewers seemingly then only cared enough about one human being and her family. It has been very encouraging to see Adine help to affect this change and to see staff and many viewers openly now start to express concern, recognition, and obvious appreciation for the carers and the others who work diligently behind the scenes. The old African proverb truly applies here: "IT TAKES A VILLAGE".
      I applaud, and greatly admire Adine for the changes (including attitudes) she has helped to bring about through her caring and effective leadership in creating a truly genuine family at HERD. Now, if the carers would allow, it would be nice to learn a little bit more about the carers' family life and their families outside of HERD (just as we have a slight glimpse of Adine's family life and children outside of HERD).🐘🧑🏽‍🔬👨‍🔬👩🏽‍🔧🧝

    I live in Connecticut U S A and have observed wildlife closely over my lifetime. My experiences have led me to believe almost , if not all, wildlife becomes uneasy during heavy rain or wind. It disrupts their senses of sight , hearing and smell causing anxiety. That is my take on it as a woodsman.

    • @donnievance1942
      @donnievance1942 Před 4 měsíci +19

      I agree. Also, it's a special case for elephants. They communicate over great distances with low frequency rumbles that propagate through the ground. They detect this through their feet. A heavy storm usually comes with lightning and thunder that would make a huge ground-propagated din. Even the downpour of heavy raindrops on the ground would just have the ground buzzing with low frequency noise. They are big animals that often live out on open plains, where lightning might be a threat, as well.

    Heavy rain means the big elephants are unable to hear or smell when danger is close by so it makes sense that they would work hard to protect the baby from all angles. Wonderful to see the lovely Khensani and the work she does. The young ladies of the world look to each other for inspiration.

    • @donnievance1942
      @donnievance1942 Před 4 měsíci +10

      Heavy rain also often comes with lightening. Big animals out on an open plain would be somewhat at risk for that. Also, with lightening comes thunder. Elephants are very sensitive to low frequency noise. Their own low frequency rumbles propagate through the ground and allow them to communicate at great distances. To an elephant a heavy storm probably presents a furious racket beyond our perception, in particular low frequency bursts coming through the ground that they feel through their feet.

    I think it was a great experience for Phabeni, knowing that Lundi and Jabu protect him and then Adine takes over for warmth and comfort bottle in his fresh little bedroom. Another new experience for him as he grows and learns. Lundi knows he is safe nearby and she will remember Khanyisa did the same. All is well and it was heartwarming to see. Phabeni needs to grow a bit bigger and stronger before he joins the nursery group in the homstead. Lundi, Uncle Jabu and Mambo will be just a trunk away through the fence there where he can touch them in the homestead. Patience. Little Phabini endured an enormous amount of stress when orphaned and on his own before being rescued. He was deprived of milk and food and was very vulnerable and weak. It will take time before he is strong enough to endure nature's elements. The team did an excellent job to ensure his well-being. Can't express how wonderful Lundi is with that baby boy. Jabu too. What a gift they are.

    I have come to realise that you can't make an elephant do ANYTHING it doesn't want to! I'm glad that you managed to get Phabeni back inside the nursey because it would be awful if he got a chill and got sick or worse! I'm so glad that Lundi seems to care for him and Jabu was so kind and hopefully one day in a few years time, little Phabeni will grow to be a majestic bull elephant just like Jabu and Sebawe! Thanks for all you do!

    Hey Dean! you just experienced the wonderful of a cloudburst. I've been a couple myself Where one second it's dry and then you can see the rain Line come over you and you get soaked. actually it happened last summer I was in my wheelchair trying to get home from the store which is a little bit away it won't block away and just as I got to about 1 third of the way there raindrops she called kept going then there was like 4 more kept going Then it just opened up on me and by the time I went halfway to where I needed to get to I was soaked through and through. So enjoy it while it lasts it's fun Unless you're mean in a wheelchair Trying to get home from the store yes I'm laughing I laugh now I wasn't laughing then I was so wet take care have a great day give kitty kinesha give kinesha a big hug for me in Babini too I give all the elephants to hug for me.. give all the elements a hug and a kiss for me.

    These rains are sharp and loud against the building roofs. A new experience for Phabeni. He feels safe amongst the older elephant group.. Do all of the elephants become chilled or only the babies? The response is quite erratic. Thank goodness for the blanket. Did you experience a wave of heat as we did in Western Australia? The temperature has no care for man or beast! Does the water soak in or form small ponds? Take care and stay safe. ❤❤❤
