  • The Grand Canyon Railway operates over 64 miles of former ATSF track from Williams, AZ to Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim of the Canyon. The 2 1/2 hr ride takes you through brush, desert, and high, dry deserts before arriving at one of the scenic wonders of the world. Along the way, hosts will entertain you and give you some important information about the Canyon and the areas around. But be careful, because there might be some no-good bandits running around...
The train is typically pulled by a pair of F40FH locomotives, former F40PH engines regeared to run at lower speeds; nonetheless, the train will go up to 40mph on the ride. Cars are a mix of converted RDC's, dome cars, first class cars, and a former SP Harriman commuter car.
On this particular day, however, our train is led by Grand Canyon Railway 4960, a former CB&Q 2-8-2 that the GCRY has heavily modified. Every year, the train on the first Saturday of the month from April to October, as well as select other trips, are pulled by a steam locomotive. This trip occured on April 20th, 2024, the Saturday before Earth day. The steam locomotives are fueled by waste vegetable oil, which makes them "greener" than those which burn coal or petroleum oil.
For this trip, we'll be riding in the "Pullman" car, one of those Harriman commuter cars with opening windows. After a 3 1/2 hour layover at the canyon, we'll return in one of the standard dome cars.
