  • Venice has become the first city in the world to introduce an access charge to try to control the number of tourists trampling over its fragile streets.
The system went into effect at 8.30am on Thursday, with checks carried out in a relaxed atmosphere at the city’s railway station and other major access points. Day-trippers are required to book and pay €5 for a QR code giving access to the city. Children under 14 and people in town for professional reasons are exempt.
The introduction of the scheme was met with protests organised by the group The Whole City Together and members of several Venetian trade associations.

What's the point it stinks there. I'd rather have a picnic in nature overlooking the mountains than go to Venice's filth bleh.

Going to Venice on holiday is an exciting experience that many people look forward to. However, being required to pay an additional five pounds to enter the city can be seen as a breach of freedom of movement. It restricts people's ability to freely travel and explore without financial constraints. Such policies can create barriers and hinder the enjoyment of what should be a carefree holiday.

Firstly, this is a complete and utter waste of time as €5 is absolutely nothing. It WILL NOT put off tourists.
Having visited Venice I can safely say it's massively overrated. We stayed for a few days. It's in desperate need of some restoration. The best thing to do is get on a water boat and go to Murano and Burano. There is also a fantastic beach at Lido. If you venture away from the main tourist frenzy of the main town you can find some lovely parts. However, Venice is one of those places you visit once and never bother to go back again.

They have to face the fact that this is a huge potential revenue source, and that Portugal, Italy, Greece, Spain economies are worthless except for tourism. What are you gonna do? Try and convince the world to buy overpriced and overrated sausages? No. You have to try and get revenue from what you've got. Venice has huge interest all over the world. It's already, practically, a theme park, and it has to compete with other destinations. You have to stand aside. It's not a Phoenician trading city any more, OK. It's a tourist resort. Deal with it.

Thank you Venice, we just will avoid your overcrowded, floody soil, our money will be spent somewhere else.
