In this episode, we begin framing one of the shipping container roofs. From welding on top of the shipping containers to building trusses, watch as we get one step closer to starting our roofing company.
P.S. We did it! We successfully occupied Mars.

If you’re not beyond that stage I would consider adding joist hangers to the part you just did over the container. I’m will add a considerable amount of strength for roof loads on that relatively flat roof. I built a patio cover like that.

yup! "Simpson strong ties" or similar, aren't expensive and about guarantee it wont blow through for walking on it many years in the future. couldn't tell if on 16" or 24" centers, on 24's such a short span wouldn't be criminal, but I'd want 2x4 across between them to cut the void length in half for better rigidity support to the panels.

If you ever start a family, you're going to have some of the *coolest* things to show your kids. Years ago, when my maternal grandfather built an addition on to his house, his family & neighbors saw it, but only those immediately there. He died before my parents married, so I never got to see him work, but growing up, I sure enjoyed the fruits of his labor.
You and your children will have the added bonus of having these videos to show how this home all came about!!!

My advice, after living through some brutal Oklahoma winters would be to get a propane or kerosene heater and put it inside and do as much of the pre-building as you can in there, and use that as a place to go to warm up after working outside for a while. A good heater will pay for itself in productivity, let me tell you!

Hi guys, I'm enjoying your project. I lived in a single 40 foot container while I was building my house for 5 years. CAUTION: Anything other than spray foam insulation will cause you to eventually abandon your containers due to mold issues. This is little known, but I learned the hard way. I was one of the pioneers about 13 years ago. The reason spray foam is the only appropriate insulation for containers is because the metal is so thermally conductive that inside warmer humid air condenses when it contacts the colder outside steel of the container during the colder months mostly. Fiberglass insulation is not much of a moisture barrier. The spray foam adheres to the steel, and the closed cells prevent moisture from conducting to the steel, thus you will avoid condensation and mold. Trust me. It's much more expensive, but who wants to deal with mold and removing the sheet-rock, and redoing the insulation 5 years from now?
