Master Yu Cheng Hui (SHAOLIN TEMPLE, YELLOW RIVER SWORDSMAN) demonstrated his sword form at the 1995 International Open Kung Fu Championship in Seattle, WA.
I had group lessons from him in CT. At that time I was learning Nandao. He taught the Two Handed Long Sword. I never finished learning the entire form. GMaster Yu Cheng was amazing -
malevolenceXXXensues The problem is, now you have to know where to look, but in past, it is easy to find these classes n stuff, and it doesn't seems the number of masters will be increasing also.
Must be the age of the camera used but at 0:44 to 0:51 you can see these quick little black line dashes coming from right to left, kind of makes it looks like he was dodging and deflecting projectiles with his sword!
wow, i started my formal training the summer of 95' balto. tai chi study association. founded by Dr John Wan - Yuin Chang. survived by his wife Ms. Elsie Chang and children and grand kids
Is the master alive today? If so, I would like to thank him for demonstrating his skills and give all credit to him. My Sifu learned from Master Yu and taught it to me. Shi Shi master Yu Cheng Hui.
I need your help. How can I learn all the shuang shou jian forms and techniques? I'm currently training rigourously and I'd love to add the forms to it. Are there DVDs or VHS tapes I can buy?
Yes, this isn't the famous Jian sword (which is a one-handed Chinese weapon) but a two-handed Long Sword. Very different weapon with very different techniques and styles.
That's bc this is Yu Chenghui. Read about him. I believe the two handed jian style was lost sometime in the Ming Dynasty. He worked for years to bring it back and now the form he made is an actual form in wushu competitions. Fascinating guy
One-handed sword was used for self-defense like pistol. And it is also a symbol of nobility. While the two-handed one can be used as long weapon with less range but better defense, and it have advantage from both machete and one-handed sword.
For this particular video, I think it's just to make the sword lighter so that you can move faster with it (again, for show). Also, I don't think it's aluminum. Possibly spring steel
stephen allenbaugh “if mutual death is the goal fencing is great.” The word fencing comes from offence defence. And clearly not ever encounter was deadly. “fencers over commit in unrealistic matches” That is because you are talking about a modern sport. It is interesting that out of all the arts out there, the foundation stones of Bruce Lee’s JKD is Wing Chun, Western Boxing and WESTERN FENCING. Not this stuff "sick of hearing about it." Is there any fencing matches ( Free Sparing ) of this stuff uploaded on the tube???? Just like you see western fencers do, both modern and Historical, just like you see the Kendo guys do.
true...I suppose I should have said sick of comments of uneducated and unpracticed commenters....detracting from the essence of anyone who practices there art to a skilled level for whatever purpose...the this vs that crowd...even the people who should know better...as to overstating anything kendo or fencing are guilty of the exact same thing and should change...its like point karate was in the sixties...pointless and created entire group of people who thought they could fight that couldn't again not all and overstated to drive the point...people who were true to themselves have always evolved there arts...Norris, Wallis,Lee...the guy in this video...me...(:
stephen allenbaugh There's such thing as blunted simulators for sparring, you know. :) While I completely understand why people would feel that weapon arts are tricky to safely practice in full-speed sparring, it is not even close to being as difficult as they make it out to be. For example, HEMA [Historical European Martial Arts] practitioners do it regularly with full-intent and speed--and not with wood, bamboo, or something comparable to hilted car antennas; but with metal sword simulators that look, weigh, feel, and handle like the real thing. As for protection, it's usually done in a fencing mask, a padded fencing jacket, gloves, and elbow & knee pads. (And many wear only this much for tournaments and such.) Considering how the only thing that separates most arts is a thin veneer of aesthetics, (There's only so many ways to kill with a 3-foot rod-like object) there is absolutely no reason it can't also be done with other arts. :) In fact, judging from what we have learned from sparring, I would say it is absolutely indispensable to go from simply knowing the motions to truly understanding one's art! I've found that it's exactly like language-learning: you can study grammar and syntax all you want. However, the only way you will ever be able to actually speak the language is if you actually practice SPEAKING in the first place! Otherwise you will end up like any high school student, who knows the theory, yet is totally helpless once he can't use some pre-prepared sentence. ("How do you do?", "Where is the bathroom?", etc.)
HipposHateWater Good for you...and I know....Higher conciousness thru harder contact...progressive resistence againt a resisting opponent is the only way to learn what works and what doesnt...otherwise one is kidding oneself...safety first..is why its progressive resistence as ones skill grows raise the level of resistence...been watching alot of the HEMA ...and quite frankly the Chinese or Japanese would have a world of problems...no guard or to small a one on there swords...to start with...there is good in all ...take what works for you from each...discard the rest...creating your own style...with your own attributes
I thought this guy looked really like an actor i keep seeing in martial arts movies, and then it turns it this is him, rip to a legend.
It was Yellow River Fighter. Great movie.

I remember this tournament and this performance. A true legend. We shall not see his like again.
What Gandlaf do when he isn't saving Middle Earth. :P
MariusThePaladin funny, did you know this man died recently, he was 76
malevolenceXXXensues That's a sad news and a great loss to kung-fu world then.
There aren't many weapon kung-fu instuctor left out there.
MariusThePaladin I wouldn't say that, still a good handful if you know where to look

"Old is Gold"!!
He is alive, has a big beard and hasn't lost his speed and flexibility at all. Respect!
Spectacular!!!!

@FRANK22131 Yes, he just starred in a new movie, THE SWORD IDENTITY!
@swordmaestre It was 1995 in Seattle, WA.
So fluid like. It literally looks like the blade is bending

wtf is this music? totally ruined it

The blades usually do bend. Most kung fu performance blades are really thin so they can bend and snap.
Master Yi!!
RIP master
Great master. Real wushu!
i want personal lessons from this guy
Very, very nice. Hope I will be that agile at this age.
Contemporary wushu is for show, not for fighting. The swords are thin so that they make a snapping sound when you stab them
The age of swords is over. This is why we appreciate these arts (all styles worldwide) as art. :)
Rest in peace
Yu Chenghui (16 August 1939 - 4 July 2015)
Amazing, He moves like an 18 year old.. Considering his Age !
srsly, look at the bounce in his step. i don't even move that easily and i'm probably way less than 1/2 his age.
First time I seen someone use it two handed

Thank you so much for the background information behind this video and such an interesting man.

i was expecting the Wong Fei Hung theme or something lol

Are yu talking about european sword or chinese sword?
10/10 would fight
they're usually just for training
isn't he off teckan?
i thought this going to be bs... i was wrong. nice technique very nice.
yi's grandfather :D
oh, so that's who yoda's master is.
haha yoda's tall cousin
What kind of sword is that?
Two handed Jian
Ha ha ha ! Master Yu is smart, he didnt show all his sword skills ! Ha ha ha !
Wow, this guy is really spry for his apparent age
For anybody that might know, why do the Chinese use aluminum practice weapons? They are so 'whippy', it would be frustrating.
zelda music? in 1995? mmm.. a link to the past?
Great now lets see him fence with the it !
