Only having what you need helps our planet. That’s been a big motivating factor to keep my shopping habits minimal to almost nonexistent 😅
Yes! I love that you mentioned this Nicole. minimalism helps our planet too :D
Love it!
One thing that help me the most when buying clothes is to know and be conscious of what actually fits me, knowing (and accepting) my body type was crucial cause now I avoid buying clothes just because I like them on someone else ('cause doesn't mean it'll look good on me). And also stop caring if my friends have enough money to spend like crazy, I mean it's fine, but comparing myself to them made me feel like I have to do the same.
I love your videos! They are helping a lot with my minimalistic journey ❤️
Sending all my love. X.
Love that! Thanks for sharing 😍
During my shopaholic days, I would keep my bankcards at home and keep minimal cash on me to discipline myself.
I love that idea! I heard someone call this "cash diet" which I thought was cute :)
A strategy that's helped me stick with the "one in, one out" system is not owning extra hangers. I've also found massive success in color coding my hangers based on garment type. Each type has a specific shade of hanger associated with it, so if I break down and get an extra garment, not only do I not have a spare unused hanger in the "right color" to hang it on, but I don't have a spare hanger of any color to hang it on. And when it's decluttering time, I don't automatically replace each item. If I decide not to replace it, I don't hold onto the hanger. Call me unnecessarily strict, but I know myself, and I know from experience that without measures like this in place, it's easy for me to get carried away and fall back into my old hyper-consumerist habits.
I love your system! thanks for sharing with everyone. I think it's really helpful
Please consider a closet tour. Im in search of inspiration of what to keep and what to donate.
Yes I am planning to for the future so definitely look out for it :) thank you for watching
This year we have been extremely intentional with shopping for Christmas Gifts.
We have purchased gift vouchers for locally owned Restaurants in our area that are frequented by the gift recipients.
It keeps the money in our local economy and supports local Families.
Another benefit is we're not giving people "stuff" they don't need or want.
Thanks for another thought provoking video Sophie 🙏
Merry Christmas to You and your nearest and dearest from Queensland, Australia 🎅🦘🇦🇺🐨🎅
I just love that you bought local business gift vouchers as gift! My family owns a mom and pops restaurant, so I know how much your support means to the businesses right now. Thank you so much for watching and always supporting. Happy holidays to you and your family Amanda.
@@MalamaLife thank you 🙏
I have a wishlist mostly out of necessity at the moment as I'm not in a position to just buy what I'd like/need but it has made me much more intentional about what I add to it and I regularly go through it to check if I still want/need the item or if I can swap something for a more ethical option - Merry Christmas to you and your family from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤🎄
I think that's wonderful! Wish lists has really been a game changer for me. I love that you go through your list to check if you can find alternatives. Great idea and I'm sure it's worth the effort. Thank you for watching and happy holidays :)
I use to have several no shopping months. So I am able to invest as much as I can.
Good for you! Me too. I have been doing a low buy year and I've saved so much
I'm so thankful to find you, Sophie! One of my new year's resolutions is to be more minimalistic. I'm moving to a completely new city by myself in March. I'm trying to hold myself back from over-shopping and this content will be of great help. Thank you! 💖💖
Thank you so much for your kind comment :) I am so happy to hear that my videos will be helpful to you. Best of luck moving to a new city. so exciting!!!
Good luck and prayers on your success.
Very helpful and useful advice. I'm sick of seeing myself constantly buying and purging. Especially from boredom during this lock down. I need to develop a new skill and follow this advice.
I was sick of it too. A never ending cycle and a waste of time. I am so happy you will be working on new skills 😊
I love the wish list idea! I recognised that I am always tempted to buy unnecessary things when I’m sad or even depressed! I try to leave my purse at home when I’m in that type of mood. So I have to go back home and think about if I really need that.
That's such a good way to stop emotional spending! I see myself doing that too. I will make excuses for myself when I'm sad and buy something to cheer me up. It's such a temporary fix :) Thanks for watching Jules
I keep a wishlist and often things get crossed off before I buy them. It helps keep me focused. Of course I still overspend, but I am working on that. My biggest struggle is online shopping. It's hard for me to believe my sister and I used to go shopping as an activity. We spent hours doing this. Now I only shop when I need something unless it's a thrift store, but even there I have a list. I am a new subscriber who is really enjoying your videos.
Me too Susan! shopping was so second nature to us growing up. Now I want to stay away from it all as much as possible. I am planning to do a low buy challenge for 2021. Maybe you would like to join :) thank you for your thoughtful comment.
I needed this like literally, I’m trying to go basics and honestly I feel like so much put together !
So happy to hear that! thank you for watching :)
Great job, take one step at a time and good luck.
@@joanne3059 thanks !
I loved your new video, you really are a person who inspires me, great ideas, minimalism means buying less, making better use of resources and saving to achieve long-term goals, and of course, getting rid of superfluous spending, impulse purchases and debts. When you buy less, you spend less. Kisses from Portugal.
I am so happy to hear that Lina! Ever since adapting this mindset, I feel empowered and in control of my own life. It's the best feeling. Love from Maui! happy holidays to you
We have a small neat country house in Australia and have for years had the policy that if you buy something, it replaces an item. We like clean clear airy spaces that are inviting and uncluttered.Your videos are just like having a third person in on our thoughts, they are as we live, and I am enjoying watching them. It's a good way to live, simply, effortlessly.
Thank you so much Toni. My dream is what you described. A small neat country house. I love that you said it's a way to live effortlessly. That sounds so wonderful 😍
I have always loved shopping, but in recent years I have begun asking myself if I'm shopping out of boredom, or if I'm medicating my emotional status. I think often we buy things to try to achieve a lifestyle that doesn't even apply to us!
That was exactly my problem too. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but crucial to come to that realization and find a way to fix the problem. Thank you so much for watching :)
I've got the same issues like what you had before (impulsive shopping just to escape a while on the busy world). But that only brought me in debt. Until I saw your videos, it makes me want to live minimalist way. Keep sharing your thoughts and tips, please. It helps many people like me. Best of luck! 🥰 thank you.
I am so happy to hear that! I am happy to share my journey and it's really cool to hear that others are going through this journey with me 😍 thanks for supporting my channel! really means alot.
I’ve been thinking about changing my shopping habits and you have inspired me to really take a look into why I shop and why I buy items that I already have. I love your videos, they are so calming and inspirational.
Thank you so much Alma 🥰 I am so happy to hear that! I am still working on this, but my low buy journey (2 weeks into it) has been making me realize so much.
This is another great video Sophie! Many of your comments Gayle and I learned through our life experiences too. I wish I had learned them sooner!
The “hours to earn it” really hit home with us. Early in our marriage, Gayle went on a shopping spree. But then when she thought about how long she had to work to pay for the items, she ended up taking them all back. They just were not worth it.
I admit I was guilty of over buying for her for Christmas. I wanted to make sure that “she had enough presents to open up.” Dumb! After that we started setting a budget and agreeing on how much we would spend on each other. This took the pressure off. It also forced us to shop for good value ( quality not quantity!)
The “ one in, one out” is a great idea. Sometimes we hang onto a set of old clothes for DIY projects.
I think that's sweet you wanted to make her happy! but I'm sure she is just as happy to spend quality time with you and the family :) I always found myself wanting presents to open up during Christmas too, but now I don't want to receive something that won't be valuable to me. I wish you and Gayle a merry Christmas! Thanks for always being so supportive Mark
@@MalamaLife You’re right! My company means more than gifts. Companionship and love is the ultimate gift! Just be there for each other!
You and your family have a Merry Christmas too Sophie! I hope you can have a safe one with family and friends!
Hi Sophie 🎄 what a journey we are all taking everyone different, I read your followers comments and we are all from different parts of the world all trying to beat consumerism or conquer our over spending, taking the stress out of our lives and just trying to live better, taking on the minimalist mindset really helps ☺️ best wishes x
You are so right Jennifer! It's crazy to think that no matter where we are, who are are, our culture, we are all trying to find a way to live more intentionally. It is just so beautiful and this is why I love youtube :) Happy holidays to you
Thank you for helping me to start my goal for this year. It's always been my plan to be a minimalist since last year. Material things makes my life stressful since I always transfer an apartment like every 4 months. 😣 Now I started to eliminate stuff that aren't really needed and choose only what is really essential. And now, it helps me cope up with my anxiety seeing only few things on my place.
Moving with all of my stuff was the worst! It was really stressful and now I don't stress about it. I really hope this video was helpful for you to start your minimalisy journey ❤
‘One in, one out’ - best tip ever!
I’m going through my room currently, and I’ve been taking out boxes of clutter...
It’s the best feeling.
The one in, one out rule is actually quite clever. I'm definitely going to be implementing that
This really helps me out because I'm a bad impulse buyer trying to live more minimal and make great shopping decisions
First and foremost you are an inspiration. Your efforts, energy and mindful steps embracing minimalism a welcomed blessing as the New Year approaches. This video in particular, listening several times over helps kick start the path of minimalism. One step at time, visual and making conscious choices a game changers. Thank you again, be safe and blessings during this holiday season.👍😊
thank you so much Joanne for this lovely comment. Like you said, it's think it's incredibly important to take one step forward towards the direction we want to go. Happy holidays! I always appreciate your your support and kind words :)
I actually despise shopping and think that it’s always a hassle! I guess by making a yearly wish list of the things I absolutely need and sticking with it, I’ve done it correctly so far. But I watched this video anyway because of your great contents and soothing voice. Glad that I discovered you!
I am starting to feel that way! I don't find joy in buying new things. thank you so much for watching and for your kind comment :) I appreciate you!
Love the awareness you're creating about shopping intentionally. It's something I'm also interested in and trying to improve on. Sending love ❤️
Thank you so much Patricia! since it's the holidays, I was tempted to buy gifts for everyone around me, but tried to remember these tips myself :D Lots of love from Maui. Happy holidays!
Absolutely we need to be committed and intentional..really appreciate this video keep it up and enjoy your holiday 🥰
Definitely a work in progress 😊 but I feel like taking steps in the right direction. Thank you so much❤
I always look forward to watching your videos, thanks for sharing your insights. I like how you talked about the potential reason for excessive shopping being out of trying to build a fantasy life, and not due to real need. I'm feeling inspired to do a "low buy" year in 2021! :D
I am also thinking of low buy for 2021! I would love it if we could support each other :) Thank you so much for watching Kat
Hi Sophie, another great video! I really enjoy hearing your experiences and tips. I’m already very intentional about my shopping but it helps to get reminded... I’m planning to do a low-buy in 2021, allowing myself to only buy things that need to be replaced or if I run out of something like cosmetics. Oh, and you are very pleasant to watch and listen to, I always think that you look like a Disney princess :) best wishes for 2021 to you and your channel.
You are so sweet Tatiana! thank you so much. I am also planning a low buy challenge for 2021 :) I'll be going in depth in my next video. Happy holidays to you and your family
The world really slowed down and no one making much money and we don’t know what kind of financial crisis are waiting for us after the Covid clears. This is the best time to practice minimalism. My parents Always say save money. Because we don’t know where life takes us to.
Road to 30K Subscribers. Your hardwork and consistency is paying off...
I'm so grateful for my community here. Thank you so much :)
I have an impulsive shopping problem. But when I started binge watching your channel, I immediately declutter my clothes and kitchen supplies. I didnt even realize i had so many things that i havent worn/use for 10 years and i always keep it cuz i thought everything was so sentimental. I used to shop 10 new clothes/week, buy new plates every month. Now, i dont have the need to buy those things thanks to you! I started enjoy having less stuff..❤️❤️❤️ pls do a closet tour btw! Love from Jakarta, Indonesia 🇲🇨
The more I decluttered, the more I started realize how much I really had! but lesson learned 🥰 I am so glad that you were able to enjoy having less, but only the essentials. closet tour in planned for a future video! Love from Maui. I really appreciate you watching.
Utterly brilliant 👏🏾 absolutely love the intentionality behind everything you do 💓
Thank you so much Zoe. That truly means a lot to me :)
Thank you Sophie 😊
Merry Christmas 🎁 and Happy New Year! I can wait to see what you have in store for us in 2021! You’re awesome 😎
Aww thank you! I am so excited for the new year :) Happy holidays to you and your family
Once again such a useful and calming video . I started my minimalism journey several months ago and those videos keep me inspiring and going 😌😌
I am so happy to hear that! I am planning to do a low-buy challenge for 2021. maybe you would like to join? :) happy holidays
@@MalamaLife I would love that 😌 I've already set some goals about my financial mindfulness and conscious spending for 2021 so any ideas or suggestions would be welcomed🥰😇
I do believe that buying locally when you can is the best. There is the support of local businesses as well as decreased pollution and energy from the transportation associated with having it shipped. Even things labeled as "free" have a cost, it just might not be monetary, but it will cost you in some other way...hence intentionality with all purchases is such a good idea. Oh man, the one in one out rule is awesome, I haven't heard of it before, but it totally makes sense. I think I should adopt that rule. I grew up as a saver, so I feel like I barely spend much money...spending money on myself tends to be a challenge for me. But on the flip side it's also hard to get rid of certain things, because I did save up for it and buy it. However, getting rid of things that I totally don't need and haven't used in a long time, is so satisfying. I like how you're incorporating more personal finance ideas into your videos :) Like-104
Woah I love what you said about the other associated cost of "free" things. It so true! I only used to think in terms of monetary cost, but now that's not my main concern. I hope you try the one in and one out rule to see how it works for you. But it sounds like you already sensible with your spending Alex :) I can see why it would be much more difficult for you to get rid of your items, since you were selective and saved up for it in the first place. I hope you have an amazing holiday weekend! I hope you get some time off to enjoy with your family :D talk to you soon.
@@MalamaLife Thank you Sophie. I hope you have a happy holiday as well!

Happy holidays to you :) I appreciate all your support and your kind comments. It always makes my day. Thank you
I love the “one in one out” rule!
For clothing, like to create a Pinterest board with what’s in my wardrobe. Whenever I get a pang to shop I look though things I already own and perhaps try to create new outfits, and browse Pinterest for inspiration, that’s usually enough to satisfy me. I also have a board for wish list and more often than not when I open it and see things from few weeks before I don’t want them anymore. X
Oh I love this idea! I'll have to try this with my Pinterest too. Thank you for sharing Ania :)
Love this idea Ania! ❤️

im doing a 34 day reset where i dont buy anything that i dont need (ie. clothes, bags, etc.). it's making me much more intentional and im realizing that i can then save money on things that i actually need for the home or even for business ventures/investing!

I've been experimenting with different color palettes lately. Now that I'm aging, it's sad to say, that not every color or style fits me like it once did 🙁. I love fashion and knew from a very young age fashion is a big part of who I am. I love everything Dior! But, I haven't bought a nice piece in a really long time! Thank you for this video I'm going to work on building my capsule wardrobe this weekend. I can't wait for your video on selling items. I have tons of shoes to sell.

I do not like shopping. Mostly get in and out quick with my items. There are better things to do. Do not buy things very often because most things turn into clutter after a while. Usually will not buy an item unless I think it will get used a lot. Sometimes I like window shopping though, just look at stuff for entertainment .
If only I could get a check for all the junk I used to buy out of boredom. 💰💰
So true
i really love your hair❤️may I know what shampoo you’re using? Thank You 😊
Thank you 🥰 I just switched to Acure shampoo and conditioner
1. Opportunity Cost - just pay what is realistic.
2. Research - think about what you can really buy.
3. Wish List - there are something what you want to buy in your mind.
4. Test of Time - there are always temptations encouraging you to buy one more.
5. Use What You Have - find something that you already paid before.
6. One In, One Out - there is something either useful or harmful to buy.
7. No Shopping Challenge - shopping is addictive unfortunately..
Hi Sophie, just discovered your channel and love it! :) I relate so much to what you're saying! I started this minimalism attitude recently and it freed me !! Likewise, I don't feel the need to buy just for the sake of buying :D
