Riding also forces one to focus on the task at hand, riding the motorbike without being killed by all the inattentive drivers. Also the experience fills my senses. Someone once said driving a car feels like you are watching a movie but riding a motorbike feels like you are IN the movie.

The constant focused attention is a form of meditation, that is why you feel so chilled after a ride.

I too have lived with depression and anxiety all my life. Also ridden motorcycles as long. For me becoming an integral part of a machine that requires complete attention and focus is a way to give that more troublesome part of my brain a rest.

bought a 2001 Hayabusa in 2005, Me and my girlfreind toured the UK lake district the same year, A year later we decided to travel a bit further, The Italian lakes, Lake Como 1700 miles away. It was an amazing holiday and when we got to lake Como I proposed to my now wife at the Hotel Villa Giulia. That was 19 years ago. I still have the Hayabusa along with my therapy bike, A 2015 Sherco ST300. My days of doing 190mph are over But at 57 years old practising wheelies at 30mph on a trials bike is so much fun. Enough to keep my mind feeling young. What with building electric skateboard and 60mph RC cars and other stuff I never have time to feel down or lonely. Lesson in life, Buy an old battered motorbike, fix it up, then ride it, You'll be the happiest man in the world. Happy Days.

You're so right and it's not just getting out of the house, there's something special about motorcycling.
It requires concentration, of sorts, so you can't be worrying about 'stuff', you are thinking of the rider. It is a meditation, indeed! A 'zen' experience.
It feels good riding through sweeping bends and feeling/hearing the engine beneath you.
You tend to actually see/experience the landscape you are riding through way more than when driving.
From the first day I began riding I knew I was hooked.
From the moment I get off my bike I can't wait to get back on.
Winter has been hard, because I'm afraid to get corrosive road salt on her delicate shiny parts hehe, but I'll soon be back in the saddle.
I would say the next step, Gus, if you want to stretch your mental powers even more, is to join the Triumph Owners clubs and head to a few meetings and ride outs, but biking is awesome even when solo!

      Hi David,
Thanks yes I think we are very much both on the same wave length there!! Very meditative and great mindfulness practice.
I meditate every morning and it really helps. Just love the experience of riding and exploring. So many great benefits to it.
Fair enough, my Speedy may feel the winter but hopefully not too bad! I hope you can get out for a ride soon.
I think that is a great idea 👍 It would be a very good next step and be really good for me to do. Thank you for the suggestion and I think I am going to make that a goal to do.

Thank you for sharing both your inner and outer journey. It’s inspiring and affirming to discover a fellow biker with parallel thoughts to my own. I ride a Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager 1700 ABS. The bike weighs in at half a ton, necessitating the need to stay focused with the moment at hand. It definitely is therapy rich, providing a sense of instantly feeling better mentally and physically. The internal image I conjure is that of an indigenous American Indian on a pony exploring the world surrounding me. Simultaneously, thoughts emerge of my childhood, discovering new territory in my neighborhood and beyond on my bicycle. I am free to go in any direction of my choosing. The senses become intoxicated in the forever moments of timelessness as I move forward down the road and spontaneously unwind past memories like a video on auto play. I’m invigorated and so alive, just me and the purr of the mammoth between my legs. What more can you want?

It must have taken a lot of courage Angus to decide to start talking openly and sharing your struggles with your mental health something so very personal and frankly revealing. It is not something I or indeed many could do being so candid on the open internet, with the rest of the world. I suppose this comments section is open for any one to read so perhaps those of us watching and commenting are in fact participating in a form of group therapy. I tend not to do groups. I find it hard to judge people's reactions to me and in the past have been badly burned by people who I thought were friends turned out to be totally the opposite whether in a work or a social setting. I have had some very bad experiences in the work place from insensitive ignorant people who were just awful. As a result I tend to shun people and prefer my own company doing my own thing. Yes I agree whole heartedly with you and others that getting out on your bike(s) is a huge motivator and release form being stuck inside facing your immediate surroundings with little prospect of change unless you MAKE IT happen which is the hard part. The cliche that even the longest journey has to start with the smallest step comes to mind. It's just forcing yourself to get out there rather than hiding away fearful of going out.
Riding a motorcycle is such a visceral experience especially a bike such as the Speedmaster it forces you to use all your senses sights, sounds, smells and tastes, yes those country smells of sheep and cattle you can almost taste. Better than polluting cars, buses and trucks in a city. However when I am feeling really low, those days when you can't literally even eat properly let alone get your bike out as you don't even feel up to that, instead I just go for a long walk or get on my bicycle and ride to clear my mind. I used to cycle a lot every day 60 miles to and from work then dropped it down about 35 miles, but now not so much and my disposition has suffered. Cycling you are still on two wheels but going a lot slower so if the mind does wonder and dark thoughts creep back in, anxiety and foreboding then the consequences are not so serious as riding a motorcycle you have to concentrate the whole time every single split second counts, you have to be clear otherwise you could get yourself killed or cause an accident if you lose concentration. But when I am up for it I just love getting out on one of my bikes. The feeling of freedom to change your surroundings so quickly to be able to ride some where totally different in 20-30 minutes different scenery, different people, is great.
However some days I just go for a cycle ride of say 40-50 miles to get the blood pumping, clear and focus the mind or take a small back pack and go for a long walk in the woods make a brew have some lunch some where quite, enjoy the stillness the peace and solitude that the natural environment brings seeing squirrels, rabbits, deer, munkjack, creepy crawlies, snowdrops, blue bells, butterflies when they are out, hugging a few trees. I have to be in the right frame of mind to ride a motorcycle. I don't want to end up coming off and damaging it or any one or any thing else. But I take your point a motorbike is a great way to meet new people, people you share a common interest with. It is easy to start a conversation with most bikers, not all, as you have your bikes in front of you. Of course GS owners don't even wave or nod at any other biker unless they are riding a GS but that's ok.
Having been out for a long walk, cycle or indeed motorcycle ride it is nice to come home but then it can be hard to not slip back into old habits. Going out and finding new experiences with horizons for the day, a few days, a week wild camping how ever long, is really escapism. I guess one needs to address why one feels the anxiety or depression in the first place. It's nice to get away, but few of us are able to do this frequently or indefinitely. Just not that lucky. Work, relationships or family commitments get in the way.
Anyways Angus you have a very good conversation icebreaker with your Speedmaster. Strangers seems to gravitate to it, well they did the one I test rode last summer in Essex, out of curiosity or to share their stories, generally older bikers, stories of when they had a similar style of bike or when they started motorcycling decades ago. Motorcycling is a broad church. The Speedmaster is such an unintimidating bike to ride and look at. You chose well when you were deciding which bike to get.
Years ago I used to own a Triumph Vitesse convertible. Literally everywhere I went with it people would stop to talk whether in traffic or going shopping, going any where. Sometimes it was a bit of a pain. It was a car that generated so much interest. I had to sell it several years ago as I could no longer afford to keep it and needed the space. I had owned it for pretty much 30 years. That was sad, the day it went. We all have sentimental attachments to property that bring us comfort and security, nostalgically remind us of good times or bring us good times.
It won't be long before BST starts and we'll all be getting a lot more sunlight and vitamin D improving our mood.
What was the castle/tower/keep right at the start of the video? The Cotswolds is a beautiful area. Keep these videos coming. If we cannot face going out at least we have your videos to take us on a trip. I shall be going a long cycle ride shortly in a few hours as it is sunday morning. I shan't be taking my motor bikes out until at least start of March so another 5-6 weeks and even then it depends. It's still winter and there is still too much mud, crud and salt on the roads. I should have bought an adv bike.
Many thanks for making your videos and being so brave sharing your MH struggles. I wish you well and ATB. Sorry for the essay.

Hi Alex, thanks for the very insight full message. Also I hope you have a great cycle ride, a beautiful day in London today 👍Yes I have been questioning how deep I should go into my own struggles, but if it helps other people to feel a bit more normal then I think it is worth it. I am sorry to hear about your experiences in the work place, I suppose some people are just very naive and mainly just worry about them selves and not other peoples feelings.
I agree I don't think you should ride a motorbike if you don't feel up to it. Safety is 100% first, I do not condone going riding if it is in any way a danger.
Personally (unless I am feeling really bad) that element of having to concentrate every second because of the inherent risks actually almost always makes me feel better. But of course we are all different and it very much depends on ones character. Whenever I find my mind wandering on my motorbike I very strongly snap out of it because thats when accidents happen. I think that is why it is like a sort of meditation to me, you cannot afford for your mind to wander on a motorbike!!
Yup there is definitely something about the Speedmaster that people like. I think it is a very non threatening motorbike and quite endearing!! A great conversation starter. The tower is called Broadway Tower, just outside the town of Broadway. A beautiful place to visit, a very nice cafe for lunch and coffee, also some brilliant walks around the area 👍
I know we cannot all be riding the whole time, at the moment I am working part time in London and any free time I get I am mainly riding. My bank account is feeling the pressure!! But for the time being it is getting me level and I can feel myself healing. Yes I suppose it is a form of escapism, I do think about that. But to see the benefits it has given me since starting this channel and getting out more, I cannot ignore those. For now I plan to continue to ride and carrying on down this path.
Thank you for you support and kind message. Haha no worries!

Very nice video, Gus! Excellent example at the petrol station, meeting like-minded people, having an impromptu chat and then resuming the ride. It's also fun that our having to wear riding gear unites us. I went to a lovely place called Os, 45 minutes from where I live, in September and had a nice natter with a random biker sitting there having a coffee. We could see we were both riders from our gear and that was enough to make an approach and chat possible and pleasant. Looking forward to your next video and thanks for sharing! Matthew

I agree with you 100%....I'm really pleased you are not scared to openly talk about your mental health, I have walked away from some friends that have told me to simply get it out of my head, it shows they have no understanding of mental health at all, I couldn't educate them about my PTSD, depression and anxiety either so I'm no longer friends with these people, I don't need their negativity..... the concentration (mindfulness) needed when riding does not allow time for the darkness to creep in....Exercise which includes riding releases endorphins which help make you feel good.....I have always been crazy about motorbikes since a kid....Motorbikes are the only drug I cannot give up...lol

Thanks Jeff 👍 really appreciate that. Thank you for sharing a part of your story as well. Yes it can be very hard for some people to understand the complexities of mental health etc... I believe it is mostly naivety on their part as they most likely haven't been through it themselves if they think it is as easy as that!! Fair enough you don't need negativity around you, especially when you are struggling anyway.
Haha that is not a bad thing! Luckily it is a drug that is good for you 😉 Exactly, it is all about being as mindful as possible to stay safe and enjoy your ride. Waiting for my delivery of my Honda Monkey. I was laying around the house, feeling anxious, wanting something - just an amorphous desire escape for a while - and the vision of jumping on a motorcycle came to me. I think being able to ride again (it’s been 25 years) will help with that feeling. In general, I think a lot of men feel trapped by work in crowded cities - we have no other choice when we have families. Men need an escape and a little physical risk. Anyway, the video rang true.

I have come back to biking after a long break from them, I have had mental health problems for a lot of years and late summer last year I was at a point where I felt I could once again get back on a bike. As you say, there's a sense of freedom on a bike and being out there with the countryside. I find that biking demands a lot of concentration and so everything else in my head just fades into the background, I call my bike my happy place :) but sometimes I wish I could enjoy my surroundings a bit more instead of actively avoiding potholes, drain covers and gravel in country lane corners. It's brilliant that there are people like you that are able to get in front of a camera and talk about mental health, how it affects you and how you deal with it, thanks so much Angus!

I think more than motorcycling, it's the beautiful landscapes that you have access to via open and well maintained roads that make riding such a beautiful experience for you. It's nigh impossible to do so in a country like India where we have terrifying traffic on top of bad roads in our cities.

What a great video! I've suffered from depression and anxiety on and off for years. My brother has had his bike license for years and I've never really taken any notice of motorbikes. But a few months ago I had a go at riding a bike on a friend's farm with my brother there too and I loved it! I am now looking to get a bike and my learner's permit here in Australia and I've very excited. I have an e-scooter and even riding it I've found beneficial for my mental health . I cannot wait to get a bike. I'm 55yo....I'm nervous but I'm really excited! Thanks for this great video! I reckon riding bike will be the same for me once I get over the fear and learn how to ride properly! Also, that part of the UK looks beautiful. I visited the UK (London) in 2011 and cannot wait to come back next year! Craig - Australia 😃

I agree with you. I always drove bikes everywhere. Starting with an Aprilia Scarabeo 50cc when I was 14, then a Vespa 150cc and then a Ducati Monster 620cc. I could drive anywhere but one day, 9 years ago all of the sudden I have been hit by amaxophobia. I could not drive anymore car or bikes. Slowly I restarted driving cars and then 2 years ago I took my Ducati on the road again. It helped me a lot. I changed it with a Triumph Scrambler and I did 120km trip. Quite impressing for my state and now I got a 1974 Moto Guzzi 850T. I still have Amaxophobia but I am getting more confident. Next step is to go back in the motorway, high bridges and mountain roads as height is my main issue. Meditation and breathing technique helped a lot.

This is a great video. When I learnt to drive a car, I found great freedom but it has become more and more stressful and expensive. Now when I'm having bad days,it's like I'm frozen and can't get off the sofa, even to get food. No one understands, they can't believe I've sat there all day. But I'm not sitting, I'm trying to move.
I'm really excited about getting my license and getting a bike this year. I think getting that freedom, outside and on my own and concentrating my mind, will give me the incentive to move. Maybe I'll even be able to speak to other bikers eventually. Thanks Red Ang.

Hi Lily, thank you I'm really pleased you liked the video and could resonate with it. Yes I also find driving very relaxing and a nice break from my own head! I know what you mean it can be so hard just moving and getting up in the morning, you are not alone. Just try to progress at your own pace, try doing even just the smallest of things. For example making the bed or doing your laundry, and be proud of yourself for doing it. Small positive steps forward is a great starting point, no pressure 👍
That is brilliant, so pleased you are getting your bike license 🥳👏 It will really help you. I found it gave me a purpose and something that I genuinely wanted to do that got me more active. I am sure one day you will talk to other bikers, but no pressure to start off with. Just get your license and enjoy your motorbike and perhaps some small trips on it. Biking has been so good for me and it only gets better 👍

    Brilliant piece!
Among all of your spot-on observations, what you're explaining is the neurochemical condition of "FLOW". Mindfulness, attentiveness, "being-in-the-moment" are all synonymous.
Check out the full concept in the book FLOW by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Excellent read and explains very clearly.
There are multiple activities that encourage entry to the FLOW state. Really can be anything that requires focused attention for performance. Clearly, riding is a perfect example along with other sports; Skiing (water or snow), kayaking, bouldering, etc. Or professions; fire fighting, surgery, ironworking, air traffic control to name a few.
But among all of these, hopping on a bike for some Wind Therapy is simply the best.

No one coming else so I'll just stay in first at the junction rather than go to neutral. Taking a the left. Potholes there to watch for. Looking behind before pulling around them".... Etc, etc.

That is good, I am actually currently planning a video about this. How you can practice mindfulness when riding, I think it could help some people.
That is one of my favourite things about motorbiking, thinking about all of the different aspects and safety points etc....
It takes you out of your head and really in to the moment.
      Cheers

I know and appreciate your honesty, I thought I was the only one that has the same thoughts, I would like to ride ,more but I suffer from Renaud's syndrome and after a couple of miles I cant feel my fingers , so not good for riding , have tried heated gloves etc but didn't work. Its funny , that something that a lot of people hate really does help others , If I didn't have my bike, I really dont know what I would do . bikes are not just inanimate objects but they are ???? I cant describe .... you tell me .

Sometimes, riding in traffic does the opposite when I find myself wishing everyone would get the F*CK out of my way😂 Days like today, it's 90 degrees F and I'm hitting Every. Single. Red. Light. On the freeway, it's actually cathartic dealing with tailgaters by grabbing a handful of throttle and leaving them behind, but still dealing with traffic.

    • @redangrevival

Motorcycles, bicycles, some cars and other hobbies probably help many people but, in my mind, motorcycles are special friends you can have fun with whether riding, adding accessories, or even maintenance chores.
With maintenance chores in mind, what was the continuously on light to the left of the Triumph emblem on your speedo?

    • @redangrevival
      @redangrevival  Před 2 lety

👍 definitely agree with you Mike, there are many hobbies and activities that can help with mental health and general health. I love driving cars as well (not as much as motorbikes haha) I find it very relxing and therapeutic. That is a good point as well, thinking about the bike and taking care of it is also very good for you.
If I am feeling down or have low motivation, the bike can drag me out of it because I need to clean it or maintain it 👍

Since the transplant I have done 2 US coast to coast trips, one across whe widest part, that was when i met my first Heritage and a tour of NZ.
