Fuck, that would be sweet if done right.

you could easily make a story from tyranid pov without needing genestealers as the hivemind does think and does use tactics, the swarmlord also has a developing sense of self.

Tyrannids need an Adaptation mechanic that allows them to customize single units extra unique so they may take place of named characters. Or just create a whole lot of bunch legendary units with unique mechanics that the player can pick and choose from.
The problem with that is that if the Tyranids made a legendary unit, then logically, all nids would just be made into that unit type for efficiency
@@lilvampire7439 That wouldn't be efficient, as explained by majorkill, they take time and a lot of biomass (for mass production anyway), so just focusing on specialists would leave the hive fleet pretty fucking likely on suffering what they usally induce, being outnumbered.
The thing is every nid is a deliberate creation with the exception of mutants, mutants that I'm not sure the result of happenstance. Mutants in my opinion are deliberately preplanned. From the exposition of a super lichtor that soloed Erwin's ship (there's a Captain that is based on Attack on Titan), the Hivemind does not make mistakes making bioforms.
We had in fourth edition.
it's not the same
To make a the super lictor, the hivemind had to allocate a significant portion of power and resources that it is only used extremely rare. It can camo, adjust it's body's energy allowing it to bypass force fields, act without instructions from the hive, contort it's body like an octopus, make no sound, emit a signal to the hive.

[Conrad Kurze after learning about the Death Leaper]: I'd like to say I'm a fan of your work.
They could say that every unique/legendary tyranid uses up a portion of the hiveminds consciousness. If one of these special tyranids is born it needs to be directly commanded by the hivemind. Then they could say that only x number of them can exist simultaneously.
That way it would be both balanced and it would give a lore explanation too.
The Red Terror will always be a heartbreaking story for me. I remember hearing about it, then waiting for the model to be released. Spent so much time trying to repose it just like the artwork. I would read its story and stare at the artwork for hours and hours. When the next codex came out, there were no new stories. Codex after there was no Red Terror. It came back once with some rules, but again, no new lore. Now it's gone again, but only in the codex for the Red Terror will always be in my heart.
I'm a massive nid simp, and I feel your pain. I got it just before it was removed from the store as a birthday gift, and have it preserved for when it comes back again.
Can you cover moments where 40k punching bags like the Swarmlord or an Avatar of Khaine kicked serious ass?
Now that u ask, i don't think theres enough for a video. I can only think of the first time the swarmlord showed up and for the avatar, that one time it held back A LOT of enemies so the eldar could get away

All this Tyranid hype and the incoming range refresh has made me choose Tyranids to be my next army, more specifically Hive Fleet Tiamet. I'm also really hoping we get more new models as well as having the resin one's put into plastic. Deep down,I hope we get more named Tyranids or the option to create our own named Tyranids
Everything you said about the Swarmlord coming back to life is actually true of every single Hive Tyrant in existence. The only difference being that the Swarmlord is the only one who transcends the boundaries between hive fleets and can therefore come back to life on the other side of the galaxy.
i wonder if this a thing all nids do. many just mindless drones but more advance once reuploading the consciousness back to the hivemind. distributing pertinent adaptions among there kind when another batch is spawned but keeping the successful original on ice and reconstituting it should it need it most advanced example when the forging of new evolutions are required.
The removal of those models make me think that maybe, just maybe GW are involved and will be bringing celestial lions, night lords and Phoenix lords in plastic

If Marneus Calgar is an acceptable primarch substitute, then go and watch Behemoth part 3.
If these are expensive prototypes, there’s a chance a new version based off the prototypes is possible I’d imagine
Well most of Tyranids are already the finished not prototype version of the unit. Like a Termagant's prototype probably was active wherever the Tyranids came from.
Another unique Hive Tyrant I like is the Nephilim King, he has personality and The Court of The Nephilim King often faced imperial knights
the tyranids who ate the infinity circuit was like: "Those edibles ain't shit"

The Doom of Malan'tai actually had a datasheet in 4th or 5th edition. I'm just reading it's datasheet from the 4th or 5th edition of the Tyranid codex. It had a statline of WS4 BS4 S/x T4 W4 I4 A3 Ld10 & Sv5+
(Back then you compared WS and BS, so those are not 4+ in every situation. Only against other models with a WS or BS of 4 is it a 4+ to hit. Also I stands for initiative and which model had the bigger I got to attack first in cq.)
It's abilities:
Spirit Leech: At the beginning of every Shooting phase, including the foe's, every non-vehicle enemy within 6" of the Doom of Malan'tai must take a Leadership test on 3D6. If the test is failed the unit suffers a single would for each point they failed by, no armour saves allowed.
Absorb Life: The Doom of Malan'tai immediatly gains +1 Wound, to a maximum of 10 Wounds, for every unsaved wound it inflicts.
Psychic Strength: The Doom of Malan'tai's strength is always the same as it's Wound charasteristic. Therefore, as it suffers Wounds, it's strength is reduced, and vice versa.
(Back then S10 was max, so that's why it has the 10 Wound limit in it's Absorb Life ability it seems.)
Psychic Powers
Cataclysm: Range 24" S/x AP1 Type Assault 1, Large Blast
(Back then you had blast templates. The regular blast was 3" and large blast was 5")
The Strength of this psychic power is equal to the number of Wounds the Doom or Malan'tai has when the power is used.
After this power has been used, but before any additional Wounds are gained due to the Absorb Life ability, the Doom of Malan'tai suffers D3 wounds. No saves of any kind can be taken against these wounds.
It also cost 90 points.
For comparison The Swarmlord was 280 points, a Termagant was 5 points and a Carnifex was 160 points.
Quite the interesting datasheet the Doom of Malan'tai had😄 I hope they bring it back in 10th edition with rules more fitting for that edition.
All we really need for our Tyranid armies are the Swarmlord and Old One-Eye. More characters are cool though.
Tyranids evolve to whatever is needed, in the old 4th & 5th edition you could just pick what Bioform mutations you wanted and had points to pay for like any wargear to build your own Swarmlord-like Tyrant or regenerating extra hard shelled super-Lictor with acid blood.
I used to do this and come up with my own nicknames for them.
I haven't played the tabletop for a decade or so, so how Tyranids work in 9th ed is or 10th ed will have I have no idea. But the old biomorph system was pretty cool.
I'd love to see an rts with the nids, where you get a fixed amount of bio mass volume to work with instead of a steady income of money/resources. Obviously you'd get more biomass with every kill and death of your own troops. Maybe you'd have to fight off enemy forces from torching the corpses and thus cutting off your supply
Interested in covering the octarius war? potenyial outcomes? Or a what if on what would happen if the Nids could get into the warp / chaos worlds and had the ability to consume chaos units ?
At this point I’d just like to see him make his own game lol
Abathur: "Tyranid Evolution inferior. Zerg Evolution superior."
"Sequences, sloppy. Yet.... effective..."
Dude, THE gnarliest bit of Eldar lore is that time a couple of space clown elves wanted to help humanity by assaulting their most sacred and highly protected site and one-shotting a bunch of janitors, who where just doing their job and keeping the place tidy.
I think a well written book from the POV of the hive mind taking control of individual bugs (not unprecedented in existing law!) could work, although it would be a challenge to get right.
Had no idea there were unique characters. Nice to know though, thanks for the video :D
I remember one recent story where the genestealer was remarked to be "The Genestealer," as if to say they have the collective memories of every single one through it's 21 million year history. Possessing all the memories and recollections of every genestealer that ever existed and was successfully reabsorbed.
only the power of plot armor can save the imperium of Man against the Nids, cause GW made the swarm basically innumerable. fuck choas, nom nom for the win
Having an Australian explain to me about exquisite fauna is something i cannot unsee. Not that I'd ever have it any other way. So damn fitting
Tyranids: "We are the Swarm! Armies will shatter! Worlds will burn!"
They gotta take a bit of inspiration from their little brother zerg and make some unique tyranid bioforms with sentience. Some actual characters
Yes thats true. Characters like Zagara or Abathur would be awesome to have, they could have their own backstories for why they are who they are and their own motivations.
Tyranids might be a treasure trove for that.
Thanks for the update, Grabbing the STLs now. Loving the new Xeno you are putting out.
Majorkill makes a tyranid pov story sound good.
Are there any Tyranids that have broken away from the Hive mind?
Or are they all in it together?
There are Tyranids who have lost their connection. They tend to go feral and become apex predators in their environment. The Catachan Devil and the Leviathan are both heavily insinuated to be lost Tyranid species.
While they have been retconned out of existence, the Zoats were supposedly bred by the Hivemind to make the introduction to the galaxy as a trojan horse. But it gave them too much individuality while developing them, and they ultimately turned on the Hive Mind. They were retconned as punishment.
That said, the signal strength of the Hivemind is not absolute. It needs to form a psionic chain between individuals of greater psionic potential, and those that have less. Certain creatures, referred to as Synapse Creatures, act as signal repeaters to maintain the connection. Should the connection be broken (ie out of synapse range), the lesser creatures become mindless beasts. They cease to function as a highly coordinated group, and instead act more like a pack of starved dogs, eventually turning on each other to compete for food, shelter, etc.
There are surprisingly quite a few very cool unique bioforms in the tyranid lore. Though I think my favourite are the couple that were missed. Though they are from much earlier editions of the came. Around 4th ish I think.
The Nephilim King and its knightly court. A rather unusual splinter of Behemoth that whilst fighting imperial knights adapted in a very unusual way. Mimicking the way the knight household it fought and every operated. Becoming a dark mirror of them. Focusing on tyrants and warrior titans who favoured melee weapons instead of swarms and ranged weaponry. Designed to meet the knights head on, and even exploiting the knightly pride of each pilot to eventually win and take the planet from them. Winning through tactics and ferocity with only a small amounts of bioforms rather then the traditional trillions of meat for the grinder. Proving that tactics and cunning could be just as effective.
The there is the Terror Below. Some sort of massive burrowing tyranid. Presumably a mawloc or trygon variant. Though this one had been created for a very nefarious purpose. This bioform could burrow through just about everything. From concrete to what ever the 40k bunkers were made of. It was also given the ability to sense electricity and power. With these two abilities it could burrow deep beneath fortifications and strike at the very power sources keeping the plantary defences powered. Turning them off and leaving the enemy easy pickings. Was only stopped because it decided to eat a nuclear reactor. Which took out it and the fortress it was trying to weaken.
Video idea tech/weapon/armor break down. Breaking down what weapons and armors are made of as well as what is needed to be effective against them/what they are effective against.
A tyranid POV book would actually be pretty good hard scifi.
The internal voice of the tyranid hive colony could sound like a choir of "musical notes", each of which is a request with varying degrees of importance. Imagine describing the hive mind making the decision to digest a large cadre of units back into biomass and the hive mind experiences momentary hesitation as its unable to allocate resources to sever the connection between itself and an entire planets worth of tyranids because it's currently fighting multiple large battles in multiple unrelated planets. The hivemind lives its conflicting thoughts in a few microseconds as it then signals the acid that will digest a vast swathe of lifeforms it's connected to and multiple planets worth of tyranids suddenly pause and flinch for a quarter of a second as the hivemind twitches, to what it experiences as a near unendurable amount of pain for a subjective eternity.
Hold on bro, could you dm me this? I have an idea

Got my stl files before it was too late. Thanks for a great product Major!
Just bought the Space Lion Squad STL (5 Models) and Space Elf Demon Hunter STL, Great stuff! From one business to another, we support you 100%
I don't think writing from the Hive Mind's point of view would be boring if it's done well, it just wouldn't make for a good book on its own. Attempts at expressing the thoughts of a creature that thinks fundamentally differently from humans are a fun (and often trippy) read, at least to me. Probably best as either a short story or a chapter in a novel that's from another faction's POV.
The hive mind, and more specifically the norn queens, do have high degrees of sentience, equal to that of the other races, so it's not impossible for one to show what a norn queen thinks of the other races.
You nailed the old Death Leaper lore. But now they have new “Leaper” not Lictor. Plus they come in units of 3. Will they retcon or “update” our knowledge of the Nids? Maybe we will have leapers and a death Leaper and they are all lictors 🧐🤔
I would assume the Death Leaper was the prototype form for the new Leapers. The test was, clearly, successful, but further refinements were made before production began. Hopefully Lictors will be shifted to more of an assassination role, while the Leapers are ambush shock troops to tie down backline shooty bullshit.
I saw pictures of the 3rd edition codex with the Von Ryan's Leapers. So I wouldn't consider the leapers "new" outside of their model.
You munching like a Tyranid got me feeling a kind of way
awesome video majorkill
I hope some time in the future they give genestealer cult named characters on the level of lore characters from other factions. It is difficult to figure out a satisfying way to make it work, the flavor of the genestealers doesn’t fit well outside of planet specific settings, but I bet they could make it work. Maybe genestealer cult fleets, traveling alongside their parent hives? A new adaptation to the tyranid as they face more resistance.
As always, good video, finest narrating, thank you!
If there is anyone who can write a good story from the Tyranid's POV it's Peter Watts. If he can do the 1982 version of 'The Thing' from the monster's POV then the Tyranids should be fairly easy to get a decent story or two out of.
I went to a prerelease event and I found it funny to see a lone Tyranids MTG deck in the shops glass.
Also here is my usual asking for a Major Mini for Commissar Yarrick.

Definitely hoping for a Doom of Malan'tai mini and a plastic Red Terror kit to come soon, (even as an upgrade sprue for the Zoanthrope and Trygon/Mawlock kits respectively,) since we pretty much got Old One-Eye restyled to be made with the Carnifex kit.
Hopefully the Van Ryan's Leaper kit means a Lictor/Deathleaper kit isn't too far behind, still have my metal Deathleaper from sixteen years ago.
I’d like to see someone attempt a Tyranid POV book. Or be that someone. They could do what Watership down and offer xenofiction’s do. And display Tyranids as intelligent. Just with their own brand of intelligence. And way of viewing the world.
Ok, but it will be based in their home galaxy, and since it took thousands of years to send fleets to the milkyway, they've evolved beyond a hive mind and work office jobs.
@@CitrusPeppercorn That’s a funny idea. I was actually thinking it could be based off Watership down. And feature a small group of Tyranids fleeing a destroyed hive fleet. Searching for someplace in the galaxy to start a new one.
I know that for obvious reasons you won't put it up to sale, but I'd kill for that Xeno queen STL, it's the push I needed to finally buying them.
Great job as always!
A Tyranid POV book could work if it was from the perspective of the Hive Mind and we got a few cold unfeeling lines while spying on all the factions. We know it would all be objective being the Hive's thoughts. i think this would be awesome right before the full invasion of the galaxy.

Wouldn’t say that the Deathleaper is evil, per se. It just knew that the best way to cripple the world wouldn’t be by killing its leader, but killing those closest to him. He didn’t do it out of malice, it was just the best way to do the particular job.
Im keen on the new psycher HQ or hero unit it seems we might be getting if the 10th edition trailer is anything to go off

Special Tyranid “characters” from the lore like the Dagon Overlord, Doom of Malanti, Death Leaper, Malanthrope, Parasite of Mortex, the Zanthrope that destroyed a Craftworld, and whatever is leading the Octarius nids all need their own models. Old One Eye, The Swarmlord, the Genestealer Patriarchs, Genestealer cult leaders, and Red Terror all got one, why not these guys too?
Also correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t their a Swarmlord that (similar to Old One Eye) got cut off from the Hivemind (I think it was either Dark Eldar or Warp shenanigans that caused it), and is trying to return to the Hivemind?
I know nothing about Warhammer 40,000 before until my friend who is hardcore fan of this franchise told me about it 6 hours ago and talk about it for 2 hours straight lol. The story is so unique, I never seen anything like this. Your channel is a big help. Thank you!

The old, Old One Eye artwork is the best. Much prefer that to the throw-together plastic version.
My 'Nid army has Red Terror and a somewhat unique Carnifex called the Death Beatle. I used Red Terror to break my friends Imp Guard Defensive lines and eat his command retinue. While the Death Beatle was able to take out dozens of my brothers Black Templars. Also my friends brother was my Tau Ally so it was a crazy game.

The scary thing about Old One Eye is he has randomly popped up on different worlds in the Ultramar system with no indication of how he got there.
The scarier thing with them is about what we know we don't know.
He's the first Tyranid daemon.
A way for a mostly Tyranid book to be done is a wandering genestealer cult member in space using robots too watch a hive fleet.
Funny that the Doom of Malan'tai's lore is the exact same of a mission in Starcraft 2 where you are a larvae slithering through the tunnels of a Protoss carrier undetected, eating away biomass until you becomes strong enough to challenge and kill all the protoss and take over the carrier. But while that's considered one of the best lore missions in SC the Tyranid equivalent is considered mediocre.
Considering how much of a disappointment SC2 was.. yeah that was a pretty cool mission. The Doom of Malan'tai was just... the obvious question is why would you ignore a synapse creature? It being out of the way would make it easy pickings and more of a target than say a random gaunt squad out of synapse. One is a nuisance the other is a prime target. Additionally it bee-lining for the Infinity circuit should have once again made it a priority for obvious reasons. The obvious part being potential harm to the circuit. Not it devouring souls. That would just be a happy coincidence.
Thinking back on it. I remember an old White Dwarf talking about Tyranid strategies and how and why to target specific locations. It had a 2-age spread of a Tyranid army. Hive Tyrant middle, Broodlord bottom left. Flying Hive Tyrant buzzing up on the right with a couple of interspersed Zoanthropes. It the writer was talking about how each of them expanded the control zone and allowed for more troop movement. That "harmless" flying Tyrant was anything but because it provided a route for synapse troop movement.
Any way. I'm kind of getting off the rails. Point is, ignoring the Zoanthrope was dumb. Both from an in-universe and out of universe perspective. In my opinion at any rate.
@@deltatea3192 The authors sometimes ignore logic to allow the story to flow, and to be honest if everyone acted logically key events wouldn't happen, but I see your point. In SC the Protoss took too long to notice the issue, and by then it was too late, so that plot hole is covered.
Anyways i'd argue that the SC2 story was pretty decent until somewhere during the zerg campaigns. Wings was great, yes raynor rescuing kerrigan instead of killing her was dumb but not out of character. The writing became mediocre junk only at the end of HotS. Terrans and protoss helping genocidal bug monsters and infested terrans? wtf.
@@rubensdonin5617 I know people aren't always logical. Heck look at the world today. Many people aren't even willing to have a conversation with those who see things differently politically. Never mind psychic powers being involved. It just seems to me that specific key events were poorly written almost on purpose. For example it wouldn't have been out of character for Leman to want to plant an axe in Magnus' head for both ignoring the Emperors orders on psychic powers as well as continuing to traffic with Warp Entities.
Focusing too much on Magnus and Leman. Though I could write you an entire essay on all the primarchs. Ahahaheeee.. Yeah.
Had to catch myself. Was writing an essay about StarCraft 2. The short and dirty of it is that my issue was with specific story parts and the absence of features that were talked about during the early dev days. Like having the option of more than one upgrade for a given units ability slot. Like the BC could have the Yamoto or it could have this wide damage AoE plasma missile strike.
The bulk of my dissatisfaction was with the retconning of the Overmind and giving Kerrigan a redemption arc she never really earned.
