Two things I love about some of Sean’s test rides: first is when he says, “let’s get it up to the speed limit” then rips down the road from a stop or down a ramp to the highway. Second thing is the blurred speedometer on the AA.

I had a Dragstar 650 when they first came out around 20 years or so ago. First and only new bike I ever owned, and while a beautiful bike, it was the most unreliable bike too. Always been a Honda man before that and after owning that, went straight back to Honda as well.
First issue was the rear wheel. The early ones had spokes that were not capable of taking the torque from the shaft drive and kept snapping. Yamaha would never admit it, but finally started replacing peoples spokes with stainless steel ones for free.
And then there was the regulator rectifier. Putting it straight behind the front wheel was a huge mistake. The points on it kept rotting and causing electrical issues, and in the end caused so many issues that I got rid of it.

As soon as you started talking about the starter clutch I knew you thought it was a 1100 lol. Easiest way to tell between the 1100 vs 650 for me is how the rear fenders are mounted. On a 650 the trim attaches to the frame of the bike then goes back to the rear fender, on the 1100 the trim is only on the rear fender. This is no matter if its a Custom or Classic so you can tell the difference between the 650/1100 real quick.

Goldwing guys, get a radio knob at the dealer to put an extra key in so it will match your dash. A Dremel tool and epoxy will be all you need.
I got tired of buying rear tires at twice the price so I tried a Michelin Snow tire and I like it. I thought a snow tire might be a softer compound. I use 28 psi not the standard 32 psi. I tested it hard because if it were goina slip I wanted to be expecting it. I can drag the pegs off that thing with absolutely no slip. Speed tested to 130 mph (I chickened out). Breaking is improved because of the extra ground contact and its much better than a motorcycle tire in the rain. Its about 3 years old and going strong. If it blows up tomorrow I'll die with a surprised look on my face. :0

Caleb if you want a street legal go- kart hunt down a 1990s Nissan Exa. ( That's if they were sold inAmerica or maybe badged under a different name.) They handled brilliantly, and with some minor upgrades to the motor, such as a better quality turbo, tuned extractor type manifold & exhaust system and a ported & polished head they are pretty slick. All in a 100% legal car.

You'll still make money on that 650. Good for that guy for saying "I'm a huge fan, but I'll keep the check thank you very much." It's not like you over paid by that much. The guy bought that first bike in June and he only put 200 miles on it in 9 months? That's not much riding. I hope he rides his next bike more. I got my first bike last September, an old Honda CB750, and I've already put over a thousand miles on it just cruising around my area. No road trips, just joyriding around.

Hey Sean! I just picked up a 2003 V-Star 1100 Classic with just 4,750 miles on the clock from the original owner. A good carb cleaning, and cleaning off 5 years of dust and the bike looks and runs like near new. This is my first Yamaha and the starter clutch has already been upgraded to the after market. Again, we're talking a 2003 V-Star 1100. you'll never guess what the guy was asking for it. It's nothing but a Money bike. He set the price three months ago at $2,500 and although that was a smokin deal, I passed on it. Fast forward to last week and the guy calls me and says...The Wife Said "Get Rid Of The Bike!!"....so believe it or not, the guy (Super nice by the way) said, give me $1,000 and get it out of here. No Joke! So now I'm sporting a really clean low mileage bike for less than I would pay for a basket case V-Star. Just thought I'd share my smokin deal with you guys. Cheers! Sorry about the 650 not being what you wanted. Zip~

As a Goblin owner, there are a few things I wanted to point out. Not trying to correct or anything, just observations. Our car is build #49 (I have the VIN tag) and was built after his and Demo Ranch, so this one has to be earlier. Also there are a bunch of tell-tale signs of the earlier construction such as brackets behind the seat are that are no longer installed. It's interesting to see other Goblins out there and some of the differences. Great video!

  • @AgentWest
    @AgentWest Před 3 lety

I'm couple of years late to the show, but i have to point out a serious safety flaw with this particular Goblin:
The shoulder harness bar is way too low. Four or five point harness should NEVER have shoulder belts go down behind the seat like that. With the way they are in a head-on they will essentially push your spine together, causing serious injuries. Besides, with them pulling down you can't get them properly snug since you're pushing against your own body, not to mention that they will probably get rather uncomfortable after prolonged driving.
Ideally that bar should be at the same level as driver's shoulders so that the belts are horizontal, or going up slightly.

  • @plumbusman

What a rabbit hole, this show... been watching 2-3 episodes already. INSANELY interesting to see behind the scenes of bike dealers. And also, just HAD to look up the ariel atom (top gear's epsiode was AMAZING!) Now i absolutely have to watch next beard episode to see what the atom is like when it's bought.
Also, i think i got started on this series because i saw the video on the guy who brought in a show and tell (and ride) of his vanderhall. And that's my unicorn vehicle the first time i saw it a used bike shop that became a dealer right as the company selling the Venice in larger market. Watched Jay Leno's garage to find out what it's all about.
You saw the atom, and you then heard about the Goblin being a similar, budget version (funny too, the vanderhall and goblin engines are same, aren't they?) And this guy WANTS a gremlin based on demo ranch's video.

Funny thing I can relate to the second one also, I have a 2008 GL1800. I rode a friend's 1800 and knew it was going to be tall. When my brother went to buy one I kept telling him, take mine and ride it for a while, it's taller than you expect. He is now trying to adjust.

I have the 1100 Custom with an aftermarket dagger fender and stiletto seat, and when you said starter clutch issue, I assumed that bike was the 1100 as well! (I replaced my starter clutch myself). But when he later said 650, I thought, "man! I'm bad at recognizing my own bike!"
