Rifles on the Danube: Hungarian AK-Pattern Firearms, 1959-2002
At the end of the Second World War, Hungary was occupied by Soviet troops and soon fell into the Soviet sphere of influence, joining the Warsaw Pact in 1955. Like most other socialist countries behind the Iron Curtain, Hungary would soon be producing domestic copies of the Mikhail Kalashnikov’s Avtomat Kalashnikova. Hungarian engineers at FÉG developed several unique AK models and variants-such as the AMP and the AMD-65-putting Hungary’s distinctive mark on the ubiquitous Avtomat. Many of these are still used today conflict zones around the world.
In Rifles on the Danube: Hungarian AK-Pattern Firearms, 1959-2002, László Becz charts the course of the AK’s Hungarian history, from the first imports of Soviet rifles to the rifles of the new millennium. The book presents a general history of Hungarian arms production, with a particular focus on the complexities and nuances of manufacture under the Soviet system-something rarely found in English-language works. This story is told through the lens of the FÉG factory, and includes a number of short biographies of key design personnel.
Renowned Hungarian firearms researcher Zoltán Szőrös has called Rifles on the Danube “undeniably the most complete chronicle of the golden age of firearms production in twentieth-century Hungary”, and the book certainly delivers on this endorsement. In addition to the unique historical stories and geopolitical context presented herein, this book provides deep details about each Hungarian AK in terms of its production, manufacturing, and technical characteristics. Rifles on the Danube covers the following firearms in detail:
- AK-55
- AKM-63
- AMD-65
- AMP
- AK-63
- NGM & NGV
- SA-85M, SA-85S & SA-2000M
Each chapter describes the conception, development, trial and testing, and intended role or one or more weapons. Essential technical aspects of design and operation are framed in their historical context and the whole is laid out in a clear, logical, and chronological manner. Additional sections of the book address magazines, accessories, rifle grenades, and markings.
More than just a presentation of dry facts, the narratives relayed in the book are lavishly illustrated with photography of key firearms from Hungarian and international collections. The manuscript is illustrated with hundreds of full-colour photographs and additional archival imagery, and the book will be printed on beautiful photo-quality paper stock, tastefully laid out in a contemporary style. Like other Headstamp Publishing books, Rifles on the Danube is a handily sized hardcover edition, measuring some 10.25 × 7.75 inches (26 × 20 cm) and an anticipated 370 pages in length. It will be section-sewn and bound for increased durability and easier, flatter opening. The cover is wrapped in a premium material, with beautiful debossed details in white and gold foils.
Written as the culmination of nearly two decades of research, Rifles on the Danube: Hungarian AK-Pattern Firearms, 1959-2002 is built upon Mr Becz’ exceptional access to factory and military sources, combined with painstaking archival research, and will appeal to the collector, historian, and enthusiast alike.

As a bibliophile, I really enjoy the cover designs and the way each book is quickly identifiable, with lots of little unique details, whilst retaining a common aesthetic so they all flow together. That's harder to do than many people realise, and deserves attention.
It's pretty cool they solidified a design language from day one.
Thanks! Our graphic designer, Justin Baird, is really good.
It make me think of the old minecraft tutorial book for xbox 360 and ps3.
Definitely something we work closely with Justin to ensure. Glad it is appreciated!
Amazing. I told Laszlo to contact you in Dec 2022, really happy to see this come to fruition.
I get my salary next week and as a humgarian gunsmith I'm obligated to get this book
We had a special $5 shipping to Hungary if you pick our European pledge :)
As awesome as this CZcams channel is, I imagine that Headstamp Publishing will turn out to be Ian's true legacy.
I wish it would expand more so we could have easy access worldwide to their reference books. It's pretty much a US/Canada only affair until now with some extremely limited European availability. I'm not in any of those regions, so it's pretty much impossible to get one, even with them already costing 3/4 of the minimum wage here, but that's common for reference books so.
@@phazonlord0098
Can you get one through your library ?
I doubt it. The books-if only as a function on how long it takes to produce one-will only be a niche product compared to the information he has provided through his videos.
@@phazonlord0098 I checked the kickstarter out, for this one at least they have shipping from France available for European backers, do check it out
@@terry7907 But for Ian the book cements him as a firearms historian. The videos are definitely the way to spread the word around and reach as many people as possible nowadays, but books represent the lineage and legacy of true historians and even being a niche, they're being enjoyed by someone who truly appreciates and is passionate about the subject, not just by someone who just quickly wanna know about a certain firearm.
If this wouldn't be enough then, László was my airsoft event organizer mentor as well. I learned to keep strict to the values by watching and understanding how he has approached the game in the old times when people around us were all going crazy without rules and regulations. We were using bio- BB and dresscode and mid-caps already in 2008ish. Thank you Laci!
Not to judge the books by their covers, but I am always blown away by how gorgeous each and every title is
Definitely picking up a copy 🇭🇺

I remember how 20000 of these were sent from Hungary to Croatia to help us at the begining of war.
And I remember the article saying how much each rifle cost to purchase, it was $119.99 for each rifle in Hungarian forints. Then the Hungarian article said later ones were donated. Sadly, ethnic Hungarians in Serbia paid a heavy price for Hungary sending those rifles. Either way, I'm glad Slovenia and Croatia broke free and are independent prosperous nations today in the EU.
@@prdubi ''Sadly, ethnic Hungarians in Serbia paid a heavy price for Hungary sending those rifles.''
It was actually the actions of Milošević and his cronies against minorities that were already underway in Vojvodina that contributed to the Hungarian decision.
@Republikaner1944 yesh, sending them and many other minorities to fight their battles.
I backed it 30 minutes before this video came out! Excited for another excellent book, Ian!
I hope there will be a Hungarian guns in WW1 or/and on WW2 from these great books! Instant buy!
As a developer of the AMD-65 said: "We fucked up the unfuckable"
Fortunately AMD Ryzen 7 series is ok
Sounds funny, but pretty sure Károly Zala never said things like that.
I love the reversed pistol grip as foregrip!! So efficient!
Just backed on Kickstarter. Have bought all of this style of books by Headstamp so far. These books are of the highest quality materials of any other books I own. Bravo.
Already down for the collectors edition. Maybe when my book on Soviet/Russian AK mags is closer to done I'll reach out, you guys put out a really cool product...
I just ordered a copy, thank you for the special delivery option to Hungary! As the owner of an AK-55 rifle, I can't wait to learn more about its history.
Wow, Ian, the author sound like the real deal. Though a Hungarian speaker, I cannot afford such a specialist book these days.
I just backed it. I ordered a signed retail edition with book plate and bookmark. Please publish more titles on modern firearms like this.
Incredible History
Beautiful Work
Amazing Quality Example
I was just looking for a forgotten weapons video on hungarian guns lmao
The shelf of headstamp books behind you is filling up quickly! Amazing how many books headstamp is publishing, for such a new publisher.
You had me at ‘AK’.
Wow, very excited to get a copy of this 🇭🇺.
Dammit Ian, I cant keep doing this, I just bought 7 headstamp books YESTERDAY, my bookshelves are heavy, but my pocket book is light
Love to see another Headstamp book making the goal barley after being announced, good luck on the rest of the goals, and hopefully the industry is largely over the covid era hassles you guys had to deal with on earlier books.
Please change the coat of arms on the Kickstarter edition. The hill the cross sits on must be green, not blue. Someone might even confuse it with Slovakia 🥸
We didn't think about that, but it will be fixed before it goes to the printer.
I'm looking forward to Headstamp's book about Elbonian arms and military. I hope it comes out on April 1st :)
Well looks like another addition for my Headstamp library. 😉
$175k achieved! So grateful, the additional accessories section is actually what I'm most interested in as a hardcore mag pouch collector! 🙏
I choose to believe the special blue kickstarter edition commemorates the famous blue Tupperware stocks Hungarian AKs once sported
It absolutely does.
Being Hungarian, I regret not buying a Hungarian AK during the many years I had the chance. This book seems so scholarly.
Is it bad that I went and ordered it before he even finished the video, Its recommended by Ian, I know Ill enjoy it
As a hungarian, I'm definitely getting this! ((Although the blue cover edition has the coat of arms with a blue hill, not green, which is slovak thing, not a hungarian...))
Yeah, we missed that - it will be fixed before the books go to the printer though. :)
@@ForgottenWeapons Damn, you guys are the best!
Thaf blue color looks beautiful on these. Cant wait to see it in person.
As an amd 65 owner, I gotta get one of these!
Backed. Headstamp hasn't let me down yet.
Appreciate the vote of confidence. We love making beautiful, quality books.
Bonus points for the quote on the presentation case. By all accounts, Comrade Czinege was a huge fan on the AK-type weapons, so much so that he even used them for hunting. 😉
a great very interesting video and the book Mr.GJ.have a good one.
When will the Doctor Shush book come out?
Looks like the top info source for those AK(M) variants and gear.
No idea at this point, sorry.
Small, but important part of AK development. Nice.
Beautiful cover!
The Hungarian AKs are really cool. Seeing a book go into this level of nerd detail makes me excited, especially on a cool series of rifles like these.
It is definitely maximum nerd.
I like the Hungarian cornflower blue
I do too but I like the green cover better.
That AMP speaks to me. It's a really niche gun and I know the deal with getting a US-legal semiauto clone of it, but I still think it would be the coolest AK to have in my collection.
Very cool
Another Great Video Ian 💯💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Dammit Headstamp,, you keep publishing them I'll keep buying the collectors editions I guess, just backed.
Thanks for the support!
now we just need a book on the romanian small arms
Get to work. You could be the next Headstamp author.
@@redcat9436 don't have the connections
If someone can write it to our standards, we would love to publish it.
Now here's a call to action. As much as I am a book reader, romanian and firearms lover I have several issues that I would have to overcome which would make it difficult for me. Starting with experience in writing which I only have on a hobby level.
@@Romanian901 Whilst I would strongly encourage anyone and everyone to try to write more-especially on subjects they are passionate about-we do, of course, have certain minimum standards for Headstamp manuscripts. What is even more important than writing ability (much of which I can clean up in the edit), however, are research skills. The processes of conducting research and how that research is documented are often unfamiliar to people, but important to maintain high academic standards and lay important groundwork for future researchers who read our books.
Much as I am an enthusiast and appreciate the research and work put in, I find the cost of these books prohibitive.
Thank s
What happened to the Kabul Arsenal book? It was Coming Soon, but has disappeared from the Headstamp Listing
Magyar, (the Hungarian language) is unusual, as are some other languages, in placing the patronymic before the Christian name. So Baecz László would be his local name.
Hey Ian, can we have a bookshelf tour pls?
nice book
An AK from the factory in .556? Somebody call Brandon Herrera!
I remember when scores of that underfolder, AKS-63 (AMMS) according to the images, were imported as parts kits to be had for under $150. It seemed there wasn't much known about them at the time other than "Hungarian AKM variant".
Last time I was this early it was before breakfast and I was still Hungary
No, no, no. Don't do the hungry Hungary joke.

Is the Max Popienker book on AKs still a project, be it one for the long term, or is it cancelled altogether?
I think it's dead. Max isn't allowed to work with Western organizations now, as he is employed in the Russian defense sector.
@@ForgottenWeaponsThank you for the update.
@@ForgottenWeapons Thanks for the (sad) update... I guess this book on Hungarian AKs will be the closest then, I'll buy it anyway :)
And Collectors Edition ordered. It will go nicely with the others.
Thank you for supporting the project!
Any plans for sales via the french distributor? €80 for shipping is to steep for me….😢
Yes, we have a pledge level specifically for European delivery
Any chance of getting a book on Yugo small arms or least their AKs?
I'd love to grab this and I know you guys are making an effort on European shipping, but dang, $80 + maybe customs is a tough one.
If there will be no "Rifles on the Danube 2" about Austrian guns 1600-2023. Ian will be a persona non grata in Austria.
Also in video games the different ak models refer to them as the original name ak 47
hajra Magyarok ❤
I actually like the Hungarian AMD-65 as a compact, reliable AK variant/Vehicle Weapon. Replacing the original muzzle break with a bird cage flash hider is a big improvement if you have a pistol or SBR.
Just now pledged for the signed blue copy!
Thanks!
Does it come with goulash?
Yay finally
I love these books.
My bank account doesn't.
Awe shit, here I go again ordering another awesome book 🤣
And we appreciate it!
Are you referring to the book call the evolution of the ak series
Thats a nice shirt Ian.
Please Ian, I can't keep buying books stop making cool stuff!
Are the book images shown in this video 3D renderings? It sounds like the book is not finalized yet so it doesn't seem like it could be photos of the actual book.
Yes, they are renderings based on the master file of the manuscript. We use the Kickstarter to fund the printing and to determine how many copies to print - but what you see in the renderings are the actual content.
Unfortunately the high cost of postage to my country (obviously beyond the publishers control) is making a purchase unjustifiable.
@BrandonHerrera Clearly a book you need.
I got a feg amd 65 from tgi.😊
First! I'll place an order later this evening
(99% of people who claim to have been first, weren't actually first. I wasn't)
You were #1,so there's that
I see what you're doing Ian...deliver my order then announce another one! 😁
Whatever happened to the book on silencers? Is that still in the pipeline? Hopefully with some input from folks like CAT, CGS, DDC, OCL, etc? I know there is a relationship with Q, but hopefully it’s not a book by Q if you know what I mean.
🇭🇺🇭🇺🇭🇺
Thank you so much for adding the EU option, the shipping price on all the previous books was worth it but this reduction in charge is greatly appreciated.
Now someone do one about East German AKs
My bank may hate me but here we go again!
Jesus I swear to God I could go broke picking up all these Headstamp books lol
I'm going to have to figure out shelf space delima as well!
