1 you can't be sure if this is the main axis of attack yet. 2 the point of a new front is a new front. Manpower issues means Ukraine is already spread thin. If they don't reinforce and Russia commits a large force then Russia will eat up a large part of Kharkiv. If Ukraine does reinforce they are pulling people and equipment from other parts of the line. Screwed either way.
You shouldn't have bought into the daily casualty figures. If they were losing that many men and that much equipment they wouldn't have 400 tanks, 800 IFVs/APCs and 50,000 troops to commit to a new offensive.

@@jasonschnelle110 I don’t see a contradiction. The Russians have huge stores of older equipment and nobody knows how usable it all is so if they find a few hundred extra that shouldn’t be a surprise.

yes and no. Ukraine would have had to station troops there anyway to guard against a russian attack. Russia is using troops to attack better prepared and defendable ukrainian positions, troops it could have used to support the push down south. If russia wastes that manpower while ukraine is able to takes the least amount of casualties then ukrainian lines will not be thined out.

  • @utah20gflyer76

Ukraine is already desperately short of men, so the opening of any additional front will be catastrophic. If Ukraine doesn’t redeploy a lot of manpower to the north then the Russians will easily be able to take high ground and cross water. The larger the additional frontal area the more troops Ukraine has to redeploy. I can see the logic.

This was not any surprise attack, Ukraine Intel knew about this 2 months ago.
The estimate is that some 500.000 troops is needed to do so.
What we had here was a recon group...moving without propper recon done or any recon drones up an about.

If you want to know Putin's motivation, overlay a map of the invasion with a map of undeveloped Ukrainian oil and gas deposits. YES! The objective is to take as much territory as possible to prevent Ukraine from developing the Luhansk-Donetz gas field which would undercut the Russian price of oil.

Ukraine has been preparing kill zones and trenching with reinforced concrete and wood, making case mates, machine gun, nests, and pre-siding their motors and artillery and tank and personnel mines weeks ahead of this. It’s the one advantage Ukrainians have it said they’ve been trenching and preparing for this exact situation.❤

The objective is attrition. Ukraine is running low on weapons and manpower. By opening another front in the north, it thins out ukraines forces as they will need to send troops to reinforce the area, and it opens up for a push in the east. This could be some sort of pincer.

Rivers means bridges bridges means limited and vulnerable supply routes, it makes sense to attack into a waterway pocket if you can easily cut off enemy supply and travel options to that area that's what I gather from this anyway
