- Awkwafina, aka Nora Lum, has had quite the year starring in hit films like “Ocean’s 8” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” But the New York native doesn’t let fame get to her head; she just wants to be a role model for others the way comedian Margaret Cho was for her.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Awkwafina Knows Her Voice Sounds Like A '58-Year-Old Divorce Attorney' | TODAY
“Even men, when they impersonate my voice, they go lower” 😂😂😂 Omg
Avaylia, you have a pretty smile, boo. 😊
Which actually isn’t true. Her voice isn’t low pitch, it’s low in volume due to the strain. And the strain is likely due to trying to sound deeper than her voice naturally is. She doesn’t have a low voice
The fact she says she can’t change it is also completely false. I’m a speech pathologist and I work every day to help fix this kind of disorder to help speak more clearly and efficiently.
@@stone301 Yeah. Some random dude on the internets is an expert on a person's voice that they have NEVER even met... I'd buy that for a dollar! xD
@@DerClouder I’m a speech therapist actually. I deal with stuff like this daily. It’s my job. Should I go into detail about how she lowers her larynx using the infrahyoid muscles, leading to laryngeal hyperfunction and shortened and thickened vocal folds, artificially lowering the natural first formant of her vocal tract while also causing dysphonia due to vocal fold sheering as a result of imbalance in extrinsic and intrinsic laryngeal musculature?
@@DerClouder when someone has a rough/raspy voice yet healthy vocal folds, it’s a psychological or coordinative issue due to behavioral use of the vocal mechanism at large.
Ie, she’s manipulating her voice to sound darker and heavier but it’s causing her to strain her voice, hence the rasp. Even in doing so, the pitches she’s speaking at aren’t low in pitch, a normal male voice naturally speaks more than a half octave lower than this, and that’s not even considering a lower than average male voice. If a man were to speak in the same pitch range she’s speaking in, 95% of the time he would be raising the pitch of his voice because she isn’t speaking low pitches.
Imagine a man who makes his voice sound deeper than it is. He’s not suddenly speaking in a pitch range much lower than normal, because his cords can only relax but so much while still speaking...rather he has just colored his voice to make it sound darker and more masculine.
She gives me some shego from kim possible vibe rn
emanuel landao that top and that hair lul
Omg thiss
if there's ever a live action kim possible movie...
@@sindienjela bad news. There is and it looks terrible
Tbh I've always wanted some sort of raspiness to my voice lol
I literally can’t shut up when I start to lose my voice bc I love how raspy it sounds lol
Me too
Me too!
Me too lol
Ew
I just want to point out that there is a stigma in the Asian culture (or maybe just East Asian culture) against women who have deep voices. There is a reason why most Chinese dramas are dubbed (yes, Chinese people dubbing for Chinese people); some of it is to remove the actor/actress's accent, but most of it is because the people expect women to have a clear, smooth, gentle, and somewhat high-pitched voice. As an Asian girl with a deep voice (I've been told by Chinese children that I sound like a man), I struggled to embrace my voice for years. Perhaps it's time that girls like me should start to embrace the way we sound.
Huh, that's funny I am female and since middle school have desired a deeper voice. (Tried to make my voice sound deeper by lowering my tone, didn't really work out.) I think deep voices are awesome for females hahaha
That’s not why most shows are dubbed and you know it.
.there are plenty of popular asian female singers and actresses with low raspy voices as well as ....what you say only applies to those girly young actresses in idol drama who tries to act cute and girly...
your information is wrong. The real reason chinese voices men and women are dubbed is because the actors come from all over China Taiwan, Hong Kong etc. different dialects, language, accents. The accepted language in China is Mandarin so I guess they feel its easier to just dubbed the actors voices. They use a lot of the same voices dubbers so often times your watching a chinese drama and the voice reminds you of another actor. Most likely it is dubbed.
Sandara Puanani Hongkongers do tend to struggle a lot when they try to speak Mandarin, but Taiwanese people usually speak pretty good Mandarin (still with a noticeable accent though). But actors from middle & Southern & Eastern parts of mainland China sometimes also have very heavy accents that are borderline incomprehensible (especially those who come from rural background).
So it is not just because Mandarin is the offical/accepted dialect, but it is the only dialect that can be understood by all Chinese people watching TV from all over the country and continent.
So I think dubbing is often necessary and convenient for the audiences. But it can’t be denied that the current pool of female voices in the dubbing industry is highly stereotypical and should be more diverse. Right now it’s almost always a clear/cute/feminine high-pitched sound used for the main female characters. Of course other secondary female characters have different dubbed voices, but the unrealistic expectation of female vocal tone is a real problem.
I’m from China myself and have watched a lot of Chinese TV drama. From my memory at least, the dubbed male voices (of main characters) are definitely much more diverse than the female voices. Even the same male voice dubbers would be asked/allowed to use different voices for different roles (and they do great jobs at that btw).
But the female dubbers usually just use the same voice over and over for all those different female characters, whether it’s a freshman-year college girl, or a 26-year-old normal working-class woman, or a 8000-year-old goddess (from traditional chinese fairytales) or a princess from Tang dynasty. They almost always have that same cute/feminine high-pitched voice. I think I’ve heard more high-pitched female voices in Chinese drama than the number of female friends I have in real life who actually have a high-pitched voice lol
I also have a deeper mezzo-soprano voice myself and this situation just makes me go “huh?? So we girls with deeper voices don’t deserve to be the protagonist or what?? Why is it always the girl with the high-pitched voice who gets the handsome rich guys??”
Of course it’s not that big of a deal. But just wanna share some perspective of mine.
“Who’s that, Satan?” 😂 she’s hilarious
Aisling S she’s really not

Is nobody gonna mention how gorgeous she is??!
accordiongordon yes lmao
Nope because she is so much more than her appearance.
Because she’s not...
T Tao then you're either blind or a moron! Or both.
Elz Robinson lmao I can say the same about the people who find her attractive. Including you. Maybe more on the moron side for you.
I once dated a gorgeous woman with a similar voice, and she was loud. I always knew she was around by the sound of her voice. I'm glad Awkwafina's career is soaring!!!! We hope to see her in more movies.
i like her voice. during the movie i even thought to myself that she has a cool voice.
same
when other people yell, their voices just get higher and unbearable.
when awkwafina yells, her voice just gets larger and i need that kind of power immediately.
She's got the Scarlett Johansen voice
Very good assessment
I totally agree! I got confused when I was watching Shang Chi
@@LeticiaSilva-ft1yq same and that's why I'm here to double check lol 🤣
They need to talking together. It would be funny!
She got it from smoking cigarettes from age 12. I assumed Awkwafina did too.
She sounds like a mix of Emma Stone and Natasha Lyonne :)
thealuna77 then deeper voice of Hanna Montanna
Totally similar to Natasha
"Some people say I sound like the Allstate Man" I'm dying.
She and Ken Jeong in a drama sitcom would bring the house down
omg yes!!
The best part of Crazy Rich Asians. More crazy, less rich, please.
Awkwafina, I'm 70+ years old, and find you a treasure. You're one of the few people on the planet that instantly makes me happy just by hearing your voice.
Lowkey crushing on her she’s stunning.
The fact that some people are mad about this is crazy
Start writing your Best Supporting Actress Oscar acceptance speech girl.
That's real talk. She owns every single scene in which she appears in CRA!
Orlando Givens don’t forget oceans 8
Seriously that movie was boring to me but she just brings this this aura that's amazing. Like I wish she was a main love I interest
nah. she's gonna be Best Actress for The Farewell
@@dokbrian We wish! I can't believe they shut her out! The Oscars make no sense. After all the bad press they've gotten for lack of diversity, they're still overlooking great performers like her
Love her. Representation is very important. Loving how smart, cool, & confident she is!!!
She has a unique voice. Made her famous.
"You're weird, but... it will come in handy later" is now a part of my inner dialogue.☺ Thank u. ❤❤❤

Boom. ✅
Nora from Queens!
She's amazing and totally crush worthy in Shang-chi!
I love Awkwafina’s voice! ❤️😊❤️
I love that Awkwafina is a beautiful Asian girl who is a rapper with a “don’t mess with me” voice, and is now an international movie star from “Crazy Rich Asians” fame. She is crazy hilarious in this movie and stole every scene she was in. I look forward to seeing her in the sequel. She was awesome in Ocean’s 8 too, co-starring with Hollywood’s top leading actresses. How cool was that?!
ugh she's so awesome i love her. she's someone i really needed in my life. so inspiring. can we get more of her?
How is Awkwafina weird? I don't see it. All I see is creativity and fun.
Sylvia Lopez weird is a good thing, life would be boring if we were all the same
She’s weird in a good way. Maybe creativity and fun is sort of synonymous with weird here.
Most creative and fun people get called weird at some point in their life.. because they are different. The world thrives off of weird people 💜
Must be blind boii
It's too limiting. And it's kind of lame. A play on words of the name of a bottled water brand?
I assume we are talking about the stage name, "Awkwafina" and not the performer. But I have always thought it was an odd choice to start a professional career in entertainment by selecting a somewhat hokey play on words as a professional name. What if Aquafina isn't even well known 20 or 30 years from now?
I love her voice
Me too
“I can’t change it, but I can embrace it”
I loved her as Sisu 😂❤️
Her personality 😍

I seriously love her voice! It’s so unique 💕
"You're weird. But. It'll come in handy later." this line gave me a knot in my throat. thank you awkwafina
I'm crushing a little. She is really funny and down to earth
I really like her cool voice. It makes her stand out and never would I have seen it as a negative thing. She shouldn't feel negative about it

I think she has a very funny, recognizable voice and I like it.
I love her voice so much!
When I heard her voice for the first time I thought her voice was amazing lol I love listening to her.
On why representation is important: "Second of all, you won't know how to dream. If you don't see it, you won't know it." I can't stress how much I felt this. I remember trying to look for someone who looked like me in gallery and about us pages of many advertising and creative agency websites in Singapore. I also remember asking myself why should I even bother looking in the first place. But because I was hopeful or maybe a little foolish, I want to keep looking and maybe, just maybe, see myself there.
I loved your voice every since I saw you in that commercial with 2 chains lol
You have a beautiful voice
I hear a mix of Miley Cyrus and Natasha Lyonne
Your voice is amazing and it just adds to your general being amazing.

I have a deep voice and every time I answer the phone they think I'm a guy.lol.Well it's not horrible deep but it's alot like Kat Von D's ,and yes I vaccinated my children!lololol
Same here, I hate when they say sir and I'm like no I'm a female. So I can relate. We should start a club for women with deep voices? Lol.
@@CharmAsenime .
Yes .. I'm in 😂
Eva Arnas, did you just havk this movie?? How are they supposed to make box office if this is what you people do?? Where do you think the money for these movies come from?? Shameful...
I have the same problem Christy Woods.
That could come in handy though I've had people call my phone asking for the man of the house.

Michaela Dietz is also a cool raspy voice Asian! Start coming on out gals wooo!
I loved her voice the moment I heard it 😍
I’ve always been self conscious about my deeper voice and sounding like that I’m congested. The first time I heard her voice I was so happy. I love her voice and it’s starting to make me love my voice too.
Her voice isn’t low pitch, it’s low in volume due to the strain. And the strain is likely due to trying to sound deeper than her voice naturally is. She doesn’t have a low voice
