- Listen, we all know this race is going to end with the 2023 Corvette Z06 running circles around its lesser Stingray sibling. But just how drastically will the Z06 annihilate the Stingray? That’s what we wanted to find out, so we put them on our Edmunds U-Drag track to see how things shook out. Edmunds’ Clint Simone takes you through our Corvette Z06 vs. Stingray U-Drag in the video above!
What is a U-Drag race?
A U-Drag race consists of both cars heading down the track like a standard drag race, then braking hard, flipping around and then heading back.

This, like the comparison of the Z06 to the McLaren, shows how impressive the Stingray is. Do one with a Stingray against an older C6 Z06! That would be interesting. The C6 Z has more power and less weight but the modern Stingray has better launch control, weight distribution, etc. I think it would be awesome.
The McLaren is worth every penny. I'm not convinced the z06 is worth 40k more than the c8. Base vs base.
@@jp23x This is one turn and the same straightaway twice. Given the fact that that Z06 is made for tracking, imagine how that gap would play out over a lap or more.
@@ScottO84 Z06 and 765LT are actually very competitive on a road course. They run pretty much the same times and will depend on the track and the driver.
@@bluebomber697 I meant more so in terms of jmp's statement that the Z06 wasn't worth the $40k premium over the Stingray, but I can see how the Z06 and 765LT would hang together.

@Edmunds Cars did you lower the tire pressure to 24psi on the Z06? It's necessary for full contact patch. 35psi on the door panel is for street riding so the tire displaces water. It beads the tire. It says to lower the tire pressure to 24psi in the manual as a result. Performance is affected very noticeably
That should be good.
E Ray will get the jump but the Z06 will come around and continue to pull away.
I heard it’s 500lbs heavier and slower than the z06 in the 1/4. It will be a half sec quicker to 60.
U-drags are my new favorite thing.

You must be an oldhead, 40k muscle cars have 450-485 HP. Now, a lot of performance cars have 600-800 HP.

Not only is the extra speed worth the money, but it is also the total experience. I just picked up my Z06 yesterday, and mearly hearing the startup was such a sensation. I had a c8 stingray, which was nice, but this is in a whole different league. Anyone who is thinking about buying one would not be disappointed

Keep doing the U-drags. It really is the best way to test the car. Run the Z06 against a Plaid. Brakes and handling will really shine.
A plaud with the brakes upgrade from Tesla will beat the C8 Z06

The Track Pack Plaid would absolutely rape the Z06. It won't even be close.
I'm pretty sure the base C8 could have taken that U-turn a little bit better to make it a tiny bit closer

The 0-60 on the Stingray is way better than it should be for a RWD car. Launches favorably with AWD cars with more power some how. Even the Z06 wasn't much different up to 60mph.
2.8 for the Stingray vs 2.6 for the Z06, so to 60 it’s very close between the two in that regard. Afterwards, the Z06 reigns supreme all day, especially on track. The Stingray is not to underestimated though.

I think a C1 would be impossible, but a C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C8. Alot of options in these groups, but would be interesting to see the advancements through each generation.
It would be a handling sh*tshow until the C6 era. The later C4 ZR-1 was a beast, but an anomaly compared to the normal C4: a 2 OHC Mercury Marine built V8 engine with suspension designed by Lotus.... a beast.
The later model C4s could pull 1g on a skid pad, but on a twisting road, they were shaking and creaking like crazy. Not very good at weight rotation in S turns.
There would be a couple of straight line demons from the C2 and early C3 eras running the insane big blocks, but cornering by modern standards would be considered floaty.
@Sword Monkey agreed, but that is what would make it interesting. I have had C3s C4s and currently a C5, none compare to the hypercars of today, but still would be interesting to see how different they really are.
In theory, it would be very interesting to see how progress was made.
When will we see the Porsche 911 Turbo S on the channel? Against the base C8 Z06 would be good.
That's not exactly a good comparison. The turbo s is monstrous, especially off the launch.
A GT3 or GT2 RS would probably be a more direct comparison that the grand-touring focused Turbo S
Turbo S in the 1/4 has a huge advantage. On a race course the Z06 has the advantage.

I want to see the Lingenfelter C8 vs Z06! Or Procharger 700hp.
Around town, the z can't shake the regular. Even on the freeway, you never really get rid of the base model. Add a supercharger to the base for a few thou and now it's much closer on the freeway, while saving tens of thousands of dollars, plus interest. You can do all this or just procharge, exhaust, tune a c5 z and sound even better, saving nearly $100k. No brainer.

I'm a ford guy, this is the only Chevy I could see myself driving. Damn. Stretch that 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile to give the high horsepower, high revving engines a change to breath. Do one race at 1/4 an the 2nd at 1/2.

A great comparison with the corvettes , on this U-Drag , would be the last of the front engine corvettes to the mid engine corvette . This would show the difference between the two !

Why never a gt3 or 911 turbo s comparison? The dealers price them into that stratosphere 😂 let’s do it!! In the end the regular stingray will be the real winner value wise. Especially when the maintenance and issues start arising with the z06 race car engine.

When they came out with the C8 Stingray it was within around 2 tenths of a second of the 2019 C7 ZR1. I think they should test against a C7 Z06 and a C7 ZR1. That way you also get a feel for the difference of the C7 Z06 and C7 ZR1.
Would love to see the same race between a C8 ZO6 and a C7 ZO6. Also add a set of Slicks to help the C7 with traction off the line.

The U-drag is the best drag.... So much more interesting than a straight line pull.
The stingray proves that it can still hang with the Z06 even for a short distance. I would like to see the Corvette eray when that arrives to go up against the z06. The stingray driver and the Z06 driver has already said that the latter car has too much power to put down on the ground. It was also said that the Corvette eray is the quickest accelerating Corvette ever. That is because of the all-wheel drive setup in that car which would allow it to put the full power down. I would like to see that race happens to prove that the eray is in fact the quickest Corvette ever and if it's worth the buy

About the U-drag concept- (Apart from this particular video) One turn is not revealing enough to expose which car is superior at cornering. Many more turns would be needed to prove the better handling car. For example, if the comparison was between cars with a not-so obvious winner. Say, Lamborghini STO vs Porsche GT3, etc.
