    Great video. As a practicing reporter, I agree with EVERYTHING you said especially the practice part. You have to be married to that machine in the beginning to learn that steno theory. Practice, practice, practice! I do want to add, anyone interested in court reporting should: (1) sign up for Merriam Webster's word of the day, or something similar. A big vocabulary is imperative. You never know what you'll be hearing in court someday and it might be a word(s) you learned on Merriam Webster.
    (2) Listen to the news or NPR or wherever you can get the local, state, world news and stay on top of current events. I bet no one ever thought that the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard case would be interesting. When you get a court reporting job, you might just hear something like, this won't be a protracted case like the Depp/Heard case or it won't be as interesting as the Depp/Heard case... Again, you never know. If you don't know who Johnny Depp is or Amber Heard, you won't know they had a lawsuit that was widely popular and televised.
    (3)Also, I know you are just beginning, but when you get closer to passing your test, I think you need to start investing in a professional wardrobe. That doesn't mean go out and charge up your credit cards. Looking professional doesn't mean you need to buy everything new. Start building your wardrobe by taking hand-me-downs, buying at thrift stores, birthday and Christmas presents or gift cards to start. Essential wardrobe pieces will serve you no matter what profession you are looking into.
    (4) Know that when you are ready to take your test, it will also come with a fee depending on where you live. It's not just completing the program, you also have to get state certified, so have a savings to go towards that expense.
    Good luck prospective students. A court reporting career CAN BE DONE!

    When you caught up with the people you went to high school with who went to {quote} “real schools” costing thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands MORE than you paid for your equipment ask them what kind of job they got when they got out. I can’t count how many people who did that who are STILL not working, and that’s something that will NEVER happen to a certified court reporter. One other tip: When you finally start working JOIN the clubs and associations to steer you to the best employers and best jobs. As far as everything else you said, it was perfect and TRUE. Love the notebook idea. If you’re that person that takes notes and asks questions you’ll go far!

    Great video! I'm also in a court reporting program and I'm a year into the class. To anyone who might be reading this, just know that it's very possible for your experience to be different. My school is very different from yours! My biggest tip I'd give to an incoming student is do *not* compare yourself to others. This class gave me my first gray hair and I'm only 19! If you are considering this program, just know that it can get very competitive, in a sort of passive aggressive way. Don't let it get to you!
    My school provided everything we needed, except for our machines. Also at my school no one uses machines with paper, we all have a Wave or Luminex machine. Our laptops, printers, and Eclipse program was all provided for us (paid for in tuition of course). I didn't know the paper machines were so cheap though! I bought a brand new Wave machine for around 1100. It's worth it though, because I'll easily be able to resell it to incoming students.

    Great video Steno hood! Thanks for posting! I've been a court reporter now for over 18 years, but I still remember asking these same questions before I started school. One thing to note is that court reporters are trying to move away from paper, so the new student and professional machines are paperless, and you can edit and produce transcripts without paper via a PDF file. I guess you'd probably need to print occasionally, but learning to write on your machine, read back your notes via the machine, and also edit/produce a transcript on your laptop is a more modern way to learn. Student software versions are also available at a greatly reduced price. And the machines and software costs can be applied to professional versions when you graduate. Some schools may still require you to learn on paper regardless, so my advice might just be more of an opinion rather than how it's done. The biggest advice I'd give is just to practice as much as possible, and focus on school and trying to get done as quickly as possible. Looking back, that's what I would have changed about my schooling. Getting out of school quicker requires, again, a lot of time devoted to practicing, as well as going full time and not getting distracted with part-time jobs or other things that delay your completed the program.

    I found that finger exercises were worth the effort to increase my speed. They will really pay off later. Finger memory will kick in eventually, and your fingers will know what to do. Then you don't have to do a bunch of mental gymnastics. I found, though, in court reporting school, there are many backstabbers. I was one that always tried to find work that was related to court reporting, not actual reporting but related to court reporting, and they would always find out about any job I would get and steal my work. So glad those days are over.

    Hi! Thanks for making videos for the community. I have a very basic question (or so it seems to me). I'm 48 years-old and have a background in ....well, I'm 48. My background is in nearly everything. My bachelor's degree is in psychology. I studied A & P I and II and took a course in phlebotomy. I was a licensed stock broker for 7 years, I play the piano, I type 85 WPM, am a technical enthusiast, and have been a data analyst (basically data entry), for local government for the last 9 years or so. My close childhood friend owns a successful video deposition firm in Philadelphia. He calls me tonight and tells me that I should immediately change gears and go for court reporting because I possess the skill set to excel. Again, this is coming from a lifelong friend who knows me. After watching some videos, I don't doubt my ability to learn, but I am somewhat concerned that my age will be a hindrance. That fear may possibly be irrational since as I said, I know someone who has been in the industry for two decades and therefore, probably have more contacts than most individuals who are just starting out. Buying equipment is not an issue and frankly, neither is time because I don't have many obligations except my current 9-5. My question is, do you think that age alone is the thing with which I ought to be concerned? Thank you in advance!

It's a two year full-time program that's offered online for out of province students like me and requires a time commitment of 45-55 hours a week!

      It takes everyone a different amount of time…anywhere between 2-7 years. I’ve also known people who took closer to 10 years to master this skill. However, it all has to do with your life circumstances. I strongly believe that if you have ample amount of time to dedicate to this skill, then it can take approximately 2-4 years. That would mean no kids and no full-time job. 😊

    • @AdopteeHonesty
      @AdopteeHonesty Před 3 lety +4

      Well, Steno is like a different language and it's phonetic spelling. You write out the sounds, and sometimes whole phrases, not exactly how the word is spelled in English. Then you build up your dictionary anyway and it will autocorrect any issues well before you take any jobs.
      Some examples:
      TPWAEUBLT= to be able to
      TAP= tap
      TAEUP= tape
      A is the short a sound and AEU is the long a sound in my steno theory. So it's kind of hard to explain that, but it's not really about spelling.

      5. Visit with the C R director to ask questions. How much is needed for this course YEARLY.
      Ask what other online programs will be needed, this is an added expense also.

    Hi Edna, thank you so much for posting this video; it's very helpful for a newbie like me who just started taking an interest in becoming a court reporter. I'm currently a law student and I'm interested in becoming a court reporter (mainly because I think it's an interesting job, it's a skill that would set me apart from other applicants when applying to a law firm, it could provide some extra income, etc.). First, I wanted to ask -- is it possible for a future attorney to also be a court reporter? I'm mainly concerned about the ethical/legal issues surrounding that.
    Already, you mentioned that the class is a full-time commitment where sacrifices will need to be made. As a law student, you can imagine that I already don't have a life because law school takes up so much of my time, but I'm stubborn by nature and always (unnecessarily) load myself up with things that I probably shouldn't. It's always ended up working out for me in the end, so I figure I might give this a shot. When you talk about time commitment, how many hours a day would I need to spend with the court reporting classes? Also, Is there a way to "graduate" from the program earlier?
    If you're able to respond to these questions, I would be EXTREMELY grateful! Hopefully you see my comment :)

I have more information in my video where I talk about the A-Z program... there you’ll get an opportunity to get an introduction to court reporting before you commit to a program... also go into the encouraging court reporters Facebook .. there you can talk to professional court reporters for more insight on the career and to see if there are potential issues with becoming an attorney as well.... good luck!
