    Highly recommend the LightPix Labs Q20II. The biggest issue I had with using a flash was how people would react on the street, after Robin gave me a kick up the ass a few times in Taiwan. I found out that people are fine with it and like he said some of the time you even get a smile :)

    Flash just seems like a personal choice. That said, as a person viewing the photos, I don't find the flash as distracting in night photos as day photos. At night there are various artificial light sources so flash can be subtle. But during the day, even when it is used in subtle ways it is hard to ignore. I understand that some people are happy to eschew "natural" looks and just want to light the subjects, and it works for them, and sometimes for me as the viewer. 👍 for a video that made me think about how I might be able to work in a flash under the right conditions.

    • @joeltunnah
      @joeltunnah Před 4 lety

      andgainingspeed, during the day you should use fill flash. Most modern cameras do that automatically.

    my minolta only syncs at 1/60 but i found out that the on time of the flash in manual is 1/500 so if i set the the camera at 1/1000 it still works. so check the manual of the flash, it can help you if you are stuck with just one setting! awesome video! thanks!

    Photographers think everyone cares what camera they’re using, if they’re using flash, if they’re using a zoom or not, etc etc. Nobody cares.
    I’ve walked around midtown Manhattan taking street photos with a dslr, a flash in my left hand connected by a coiled ttl cable, lol. Nobody cares. It’s all in your head.

    Using a flash would, I think, completely upset my approach to photographing people on the street. I think you take the best 'street' portraits of any photographer I know of - living or dead. The fact that you're fearless is the bigger part of that I'm sure, but your use of a flash certainly helps. I try to expose for a person's face, nothing else, not their clothes, not their background. All I can say is that in my street portraits my subjects' faces are (usually) properly exposed, but nothing else. My using a flash would cure that effect.

  • @hitthestreetsphoto1253

    Bruce Gilden is the master! You may not like him, his style, his pictures, but he put his art first and never allowed anyone to tell him how to do his craft. He was a huge inspiration to me. Whenever someone was rude or some Karen decided to tell me only she knew the law and that photography was totally illegal unless you got her approval and signature, I thought of Bruce and smiled.

    You have a great advantage using a small body Leica and small flash enabling you to hold the camera in one hand and the flash in the other!
    I would not be able to do that with my big and heavy canon DSLR with a battery grip and my big and really powerful canon 580 mark II flash!
    As for the question to use a flash or not I honestly don't have en energy to argue this in a world stopped by a virus, maybe when we get out of this virus mess I would spend more time thinking about it but not at the moment!

    Good video.
    However I am not a fan of overexposed skin due to flash light like on the face of the gentleman at 7:56 so maybe extra diffusion is better.
    A good way to do that is with a Flashbender (to keep it portable).
    Maybe you could do a video using a compact led light instead (or together with) of a flash light in the evening (most of the time the leds are not bright enough to overpower daylight) to see the difference.
    Anyway, thanks for sharing !!

    • @therealsirrobin
      @therealsirrobin  Před 4 lety

      If you want to avoid specular highlights like this then you need to use a rather huge soft box. Actually, it would be really funny to use a studio strobe and a 90cm Octabox for street. :D A video light might be more distracting and might draw too much attention. I guess someone probably has done that already. I think I'd rather use a flash?

    • @RS-Amsterdam
      @RS-Amsterdam Před 4 lety

      @@therealsirrobin Try the flashbender, take the bigger one, great for street , not that obtrusive, and you can bend it to beam the light, although it will not take the specs completely away, it will reduce it to an acceptable proportion.
