a game should have a good first impression. hollow knight does not. its environments are bleak and boring, the music might be good but you are left completely directionless. i pushed through and still has not a sliver of fun. metroid games are the exact contrary to this because they are just so good in terms of environment gameplay and story

Sure dread is good but when I played the original Metroid I just got send back to the beginning without making progress whatsoever and I couldn't even explore the map because everywhere I could go without dying were vertical rooms without anything inside
@@ricodo1244 literally play any metroid game other than 1 or 2 and you will have a better experience then the one in hollow knight at least in my opinion. because there's actual colors and its not dark all the time, the gameplay is just more fun, rewarding and less frustrating and the pace at which you gain abilities is much better. less backtracking too and no paywalls behind areas

This game is a huge experience, so I’d say take your time and just enjoy the way you want to play it. But I wanna warn you you may start having dark souls ptsd once you start getting to certain points of the game. But if it wasn’t hard then it wouldn’t be funny lol.

But regardless I meant it being hard for Afro, and the whole dark souls comment was mainly due to the fact that this game has similar elements of “git gud” difficulty. The way you follow the learning curve is almost perfect, compared to the lessons the game design teaches you by playing and moving forward. Its even fascinating. As the map guy told you, you can buy a compass from his wife at their store in Dirtmouth. You passed right by it when you went back through the stagways. Good luck!
Abs Rad is harder than NKG for me. After beating NKG I feel like I could confidently beat him again. But I just can’t ever seem to be able to get better at beating Abs Rad consistently.
The game is fueled by lore. The deeper you dig and more you explore, the more the story develops. The story's there as much as you want it to be. I know that's cryptic but I hope it sort of answers your question
@@spiritbond8 The promise of lore in the world should fuel your drive to explore as well as the movement and combat evolving this is usually the case for most Metroid vanias or even games that feel different but structure wise are the same like dark souls so many answers are around you if you WANT to look for them but you can finish dark souls and not know anything about the world you just slaughtered lol
The one advice I always give when recommending this game. USE YOUR MAP MARKING MECHANIC. If you see a point of interest which you can’t cross or solve yet. MARK IT! Have fun you are in for a treat. Imho, this Game is perfection. 10/10

You can swing downwards, and even pogo of off most things and even spikes. Also, you can get more additions to the map like seeing where you are on the map or updating the map itself from a shop in Dirtmouth
The streets need a full playthrough Afro. If you're playing on PS5 you'll get your dash you were wanting soon once you beat a certain boss, also you need to slash in the air while aiming down, and your nail can have you bounce off of those spikes you saw until you can reach your son. Also yes the story is fire, and your kit gets excellent, more movement options will come to you, as well as powers, weapon upgrades, etc. Hope you enjoyed what you already played through Edit: fixed some 🧢
one of my favourite games of all time, after running around and exploring for a bit, you always end up fighting a boss, unlocking new areas, charms, abilities etc etc. There isn't much story forced in this game, they just give you lore tablets and character dialogue every now and then, you kind of just piece together whatever you find
that intro area, King's Pass, is one of those simply elegant tutorial sections. intuitive on how the game plays, with only the guide to healing needing to be written out.
One of my favorite games of all time, the story and gameplay only get more interesting as you continue playing. Was 5x what I paid for it in terms of content and enjoyment and I'm genuinely surprised you haven't played it yet. This game is one of those games you really feel the progress that you make and since the combat is so fine tuned you get a nice sense of improvement in it as you go. I hope Afro enjoys this game if he keeps playing. EDIT: the story is hot but it's very world based and you learn from the characters and environments. Not gonna spoil anything but revisiting areas again after doing something or certain events can help you learn about the characters/world more

It's very dark souls like, where the story is told through npcs and interacting with items. The combat and the bosses get much tougher later in the game. And you get tons of abilities and stuff as you progress. The lore is crazy once you start paying attention to tablets and certain character dialogue. Very intrituged to see you play through the game!
If you WANT STORY then you'll need to search and inspect everything, you can complete this game blindly if you want(which is what most people do) but there are lore tablets all around the map. OH, and you can POGO on spikes, meaning jumping and holding down while you attack on the spikes. I think you're gamer enough to do it.

i don't normally comment on videos but i'm seriously excited to see a part 2, this game is essentially 2D dark souls and it can be just as difficult. it has metroidvania type exploration and upgrades and the lore really comes together the more you progress and it do slap tbh.
Honestly, I get the comparison but I feel like Hollow Knight is a little too different from a lot of Dark Souls mechanics. Salt and Sanctuary is a much closer comparison.

The Game gets insanely hard when you play more. it's basically a souls game. the foucs is its combat, exploration and lore. I suggest going LEFT after coming down from dirtmouth to get an ability you'll need
@@rns6889 That’s literally what they’re talking about when talking about difficulty. Some of the bosses can be pretty difficult, which is why some of the least obtained achievements in the game are related to Godhome, a boss rush area of sorts. You cannot tell me that Hollow Knight isn’t hard when Pantheon of Hallownest exists.
@@FartMart... true, the difficulty comes in spikes. But the main areas aren't hard at all in the exception of soul sanctum in my opinion but that maybe just my opinion, the only hard bosses are the endgame ones.

Bro, you gotta keep this series going I logged over 100+ hours and I keep coming back to it and finding new things! The story starts slow them bumps hard asf
The story is told through environmental storytelling and item descriptions almost exclusively, but it is there, and it is FIRE. There are a few cutscenes, but the best way to get more of the story is to pay attention to your surroundings and to read everything.
2 important things to know: 1. You can swing downwards mid-air, which allows you to bounce off of spikes/enemies (I call it pogo-ing) 2. The grubs (the things in jars) are important, because if you go in the top left room of the tall room with lots of platforms (directly left of the well you enter through), you can get rewards such as money or charms (this game's sort of badges that give you abilities) for each grub you free.
oh man, i really hope this gets continued. the game picks up SO much once you get a few upgrades, and it's a masterpiece on so many levels. edit: to answer the question re: story, it's fairly subtle. there's a lot to take in, but it's presented in small snippets of conversations or item descriptions. there's a TON there if you explore and let yourself get immersed, but it's seldom just placed directly in front of you like a typical rpg. 2D dark souls is a very apt description.
I love this game but honestly I don’t feel it gets really good until after the first two areas. I enjoyed them but once you get a little bit more mobility and a lot more options to explore it becomes overwhelmingly more enjoyable to explore

Hollow Knight relies mostly on environmental storytelling and mysterious, almost poetic NPC dialogue to progress it’s narrative, instead of extensive cutscenes. It makes for quite the puzzle to figure out! Absolutely amazing game, I hope you enjoy it!
This game has to be one of my favorite games of all time, the first playthrough it so much fun besides one quest (yall know the one), the next game been leaked to come out in feb of 2022 so I recommended playing this through the next 3 months
I feel like the next game is going to be more rpg based like Castlevania. With multiple quest lines and level ups. Which is probably why it's taken so long. As long as it's just as good as this game I won't complain but I wouldn't mind the night that you play as in this game to be a boss with ALL his power ups in this game. And maybe tall like the hollow knight.

SHEEESH hollow knight is very easy to get into but the progression of the game in later Instances it harder. It gets tough and you have to wait and learn the pattern. I love you fro and If your demo souls, blood borne are anything to go by this will be difficult. I'm still playing the game now and I mid game rn. (Won't spoil but if you know you know)
A very important mecanic is that when you attack spikes from above you bounce and that can be used to get things that you think you need an upgrade for

i don't normally comment on videos but i'm seriously excited to see a part 2, this game is essentially 2D dark souls and it can be just as difficult. it has metroidvania type exploration and upgrades and the lore really comes together the more you progress and it do slap tbh.
Honestly, I get the comparison but I feel like Hollow Knight is a little too different from a lot of Dark Souls mechanics. Salt and Sanctuary is a much closer comparison.
@@thomasboys7216 I agree with that, unlike dark souls hollow knight is a bit forgiving especially considering you don’t really level up with your geo as opposed to the souls games.
I've never wanted you to continue on with a game as much as this one. It's one of those games that stick with you forever

The Game gets insanely hard when you play more. it's basically a souls game. the foucs is its combat, exploration and lore. I suggest going LEFT after coming down from dirtmouth to get an ability you'll need
I don't get hollow knight being hard it only gets hard near bosses.
@@rns6889 That’s literally what they’re talking about when talking about difficulty. Some of the bosses can be pretty difficult, which is why some of the least obtained achievements in the game are related to Godhome, a boss rush area of sorts. You cannot tell me that Hollow Knight isn’t hard when Pantheon of Hallownest exists.
@@FartMart... true, the difficulty comes in spikes. But the main areas aren't hard at all in the exception of soul sanctum in my opinion but that maybe just my opinion, the only hard bosses are the endgame ones.

The story is told through environmental storytelling and item descriptions almost exclusively, but it is there, and it is FIRE. There are a few cutscenes, but the best way to get more of the story is to pay attention to your surroundings and to read everything.
Would love to see more of this game!
2 important things to know:
1. You can swing downwards mid-air, which allows you to bounce off of spikes/enemies (I call it pogo-ing)
2. The grubs (the things in jars) are important, because if you go in the top left room of the tall room with lots of platforms (directly left of the well you enter through), you can get rewards such as money or charms (this game's sort of badges that give you abilities) for each grub you free.
oh man, i really hope this gets continued. the game picks up SO much once you get a few upgrades, and it's a masterpiece on so many levels.
edit: to answer the question re: story, it's fairly subtle. there's a lot to take in, but it's presented in small snippets of conversations or item descriptions. there's a TON there if you explore and let yourself get immersed, but it's seldom just placed directly in front of you like a typical rpg. 2D dark souls is a very apt description.
One of the best games I’ve ever played. Definitely stick with it! The difficulty ramps up quite a bit too.

Underrated gem of a game
I love this game but honestly I don’t feel it gets really good until after the first two areas. I enjoyed them but once you get a little bit more mobility and a lot more options to explore it becomes overwhelmingly more enjoyable to explore

Hollow Knight relies mostly on environmental storytelling and mysterious, almost poetic NPC dialogue to progress it’s narrative, instead of extensive cutscenes. It makes for quite the puzzle to figure out! Absolutely amazing game, I hope you enjoy it!
This game has to be one of my favorite games of all time, the first playthrough it so much fun besides one quest (yall know the one), the next game been leaked to come out in feb of 2022 so I recommended playing this through the next 3 months
I feel like the next game is going to be more rpg based like Castlevania. With multiple quest lines and level ups. Which is probably why it's taken so long. As long as it's just as good as this game I won't complain but I wouldn't mind the night that you play as in this game to be a boss with ALL his power ups in this game. And maybe tall like the hollow knight.

SHEEESH hollow knight is very easy to get into but the progression of the game in later Instances it harder. It gets tough and you have to wait and learn the pattern. I love you fro and If your demo souls, blood borne are anything to go by this will be difficult. I'm still playing the game now and I mid game rn. (Won't spoil but if you know you know)
