  • Here’s a shootout video between two classic ribbon microphones - the RCA 44-BX and French Melodium 42B. Both of these microphones are huge and sound incredible with warm, lush ribbon tones. These are both original and were both made in the 1950’s, though there are reissues of both of these microphones by modern manufacturers through AEA (44) and Kerwax (42B). This video showcases these microphones on guitars and drums which will hopefully give you a good idea of their differences. Comment and let me know what you like about each microphone!

I love the 44-BX; but the 42B might just be the greatest sounding mic I ever heard-on everything❣

angling ribbons mics at 45 degrees allows the ribbon to sag which can improve headroom and reduce distortion as the ribbon tightens as it "bellies" inside the mic. Thanks for this video!

In nowadays the desingers forget the astethic of the microphones, the 40s the best sound and desing, big Fan, great job

Love how the RCA distorts the ride cymbal on the crotch position. The Melodium sounds beautiful on everything!

Great video. Both of these are stellar mics. I have the AEA R 44 and the kerwax made Melodium 42bn. I've tried them side by side and each is lovely with different character. There is a smoothness to the Melodium that is unlike any other mic I've heard.

Very true! I sold this Melodium a while back but wish I would have kept it!

Boy, what a tough choice. I'm not sure I can choose. They are both so fantastic for electric guitar. Can I ask ... what pedal & guitar were you using? Sounded wonderful. Surely, that breakup was not from the amp alone. Was it? I didn't think the vintage ones broke up like that until maybe 9 or 10.

Does the 44bx have a boomy low end that you Eq’d out? I have a mic called A440 that was designed to be similar and it seems to have way more low end than this. Almost unusable sometimes. I remember it picking up cars pricing by outside and sounded like heavy wind it was crazy

Wow, the Melodium sounds a lot nicer than I was expecting! I can't help but notice how great your fender sounds in these demos and now I think I want one. Does yours still have the original speaker, and what year is this model from?

Thanks for checking out the video! The Fender is a 73’ Champ, and the speaker has been replaced with a Jensen. Great little amps!

Very interesting. I won't comment about my favorite, I'm not impartial... Do you allow me to share your video ?

Im almost never looking for more high end on anything but I actually preferred the 42b on everything but drums. The 44 sounded damn near unusable on acoustic. Quite a surprise! But 44 in crotch position on drums was perfect. Would love to hear a vocals comparison…

it's proximity effect is often so strong you can't just use it this close, but they sound amazing a few feet away :)
