Ollie's Hour Record: What Went Wrong? | GCN Tech Show Ep.165
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 3. 06. 2024
- It's been almost exactly one year since GCN's professional amateur cyclist, Oliver Bridgewood, attempted to beat the legendary Eddy Merckx's historic hour record. It was a case of 'close but no cigar' for Ollie who crashed and burned around Newport Velodrome. So, on the first anniversary of his attempt, we're analysing his performance to see just why he failed to crack Eddy's record!

Why do you think Ollie failed?
Simple, he had the kit but not enough talent!
Ollie didn't fail. It was a great effort.
(and he didn't even get dropped...)
@@adamholliday3391 All the kit but still......
@@kl3060 Can't get dropped if you only ever ride on your own!
Not enough aero, wrong shoes, should have shaved those eyebrows.
One of the bigest things GCN can be proud off is having Ollie in the crew! Not only a great athlete (not compared to pros - but to normal ppl), but also a scientist. My favorite presenter (together with Hank).
The editors were having a blast this week. Made the show 3x better.
Cheers!
Ollie, you didn't fail. You just didn't succeed. Life is not binary.
Well life in general yes, but he did something specific and failed at it..an objective fact.
This is like getting too the super bowl and losing. đ
Look on the bright side Ollie. At least you didn't get dropped on your hour record attempt.
Much ouch đ
lol
Scott Borrowman đ§đ
@@boliverfridgewater3140 thanks đ. Some people say I should have 'dropped' that name. đ€đ€Ł
Damn thatâs cold bro lol
"we'll post one to chris froome" XD Ollie you're sucha legend mate!!
Ollie's hour record attempt was a tremendous project and the videos were great
while analysing Ollie's record attempt , huge congrats to Alex for not mentioning that he smashed the record he went for
Hahahahaha
100% Alex is such a gent.
"Why Ollie failed" is a weird flex for GCN's recent recurring themes... and so relatable. Continue.
Great to see my MBK made it! Didn't show any photos of it with the new parts fitted though...
I did wonder why the before and after photos looked the same! I guess you're not going to win the poll :(
17:12 that alone deserves immediate subscription to GCN+ (just in recognition of awesome Ollie zingers).
My Mom lived down the road from Eddy Merckx when she was a kid in Belgium and people would come out of their homes and cheer even when he was on a normal weekday training ride. I think if Ollie had that he would have at least tied Merckx. Also the Doc on GCN+ was awesome!
What Ollie needed was a strong tailwind. Unfortunately someone just closed all the windows the moment Ollie started his record attempt.
I feel like for me and others, we should refrain from trashing Ollie until we can hold 301 watts for an hour
Regardless of what any of us can sustain, Ollie did incredible.
Tommasini, Battaglin, Deddaccia, Ciocc, Somec, Daccordi, Viner, Scapin, Legnano, Chesini, Olmo, Alan, Guerciotti, Moser, Fondriest.......in no particular order of preference.
Ollie can't catch a break literally and figuratively...
Hahaha - that's great.
This has to be comment of the year.
Ollie, The hour record is a difficult record to beat. You did a great job!
I'm still thinking Ollie would drop most of us. He's still the man in the arena. His place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
Editor was on point today! Great job đ
Iâm proud of you Ollie, I was super inspired. GCN+ is totally worth it, Iâm loving it. Keep up the good work!
Ollie did an hour record attempt? How come no one ever mentioned it?
Hahahaha. One day he'll stop talking about it!
Hour of Power was well worth the watch. Really enjoyed it, brilliant film making.
Aw that was so nice to send Ollie that personalised Dairy Milk. Whoever sent that must be a really lovely guy.
hahahahaha
Would be interesting to have a video on the phycological tactics/games Ollie referred to. I think we can all benefit from that. Unless already addressed đđ»
Another week that proves we need Naughty, Nice and Super Nice for Bike Vault submissions!
Ollie needs another attempt. He can crush it. It was getting sick that interrupted his training, and the recovery time was too short.
Bottecchia is the best italian brand, amazing colors đ got one by myself.
Maybe he should use narrower DROP handlebars
So yeah, on keeping form: my swim coach told us to focus on a certain aspect of stroke and form for each lap. Helps keep you focused!
Trolling Ollie in the bike vault. He needed those cookies (biscuits) for that.
Poor Ollie. Constantly getting dunked on for getting dropped. The content that just keeps on giving đđ
We'll stop making videos about it when he stops getting dropped!
More Ollie rants please.
I love how trolly the bike vault submissions were đ Should be a GCN water bottle for the "worst" submission next week!
So in order that was Wet Lube, Big Ring, Ride Me & Hank's Dad! Ahhh Ollie I'm sure those just happened to come out in that order....
Oh and from the totally pulled out of his mind with no script to tell him which teams to include poll is so obviously Wilier. Fairly certain that the difference between this 4 will be much larger. The Traditional Wilier orange/brown metallic is stunning and still stylish and stands out.
Strange, i was just watching that today and was thinking about why he failed so miserably
Just one mnemonic Ollie: BBAR. Itâs made for you. I was 54 when I qualified. 407km on the 12 hour leg in the rain on the A31 having just flown back from the West Coast of the US two days previously. Youâd smash it. Do it! 22mph average over a 50 TT, 100 TT and a 12 hour TT. You get a lovely certificate for the GCN wall đ. Three of you and youâd be BBAR team champions.
I wish I was cool enough to make fun of a 4 time Tour de France winner.
Pedant warning: At 4 mins 10 - it is not like trying to swim through custard. Because you propel yourself, while swimming, by pushing against the fluid through which you are travelling, custard allows you to get more forward impetus with each stroke. Consequently, you will always swim at about the same speed regardless of the fluid in which you are thrashing about. The impetus in cycling is not increased by denser air and so it is indeed a problem.
I, myself, do not swim in custard, but the jacuzzi......now we're talking.
Great show guys! Ollie are there any tips or literature you can recommend on dealing with the psychological aspect of racing. It was interesting to hear you talk about breaking down the hour record into sections in order to help you cope. I have an ironman to complete this year and any tips to help deal with the mental side of racing to keep out the demons would be very welcome.
Surely the main thing about the banned "supertuck" is that terminal velocity is higher (because the cubic air resistance balances the linear gravity at a higher speed). This is the flip side of a theoretical Watt saving (the Watts coming mainly from gravity).
I reckon you should look at mid foot cleat positioning for time trialling and hour records etc. Better cda for the same power apparently.
Alex's face at 9:01 says it all when Ollie says his psychologist was also Rohan Dennis's
What about Daccordi? Use to have an lovely Low Profile 26"" / 700c Columbus SL TT bike with curved top and seat tubes and fully chromed lugs etc. OK having to carry two different size tubular tyres was a pain, and it probably didn't do my now knackered back much good, but it did look nice :-)
I have been reading about the UCI changes and the discussion seems to be focused on power loss etc when the issue is really safety, and safety changes are not about when things are working but when they go wrong. The discussion should be on how in control a rider is at 70kph sitting on the top tube. I do agree with the ban and think it will be safer and should actually level the playing field by removing a tactic that only some riders could use. I am surprised there hasn't been more discussion on the barrier protections rule changes and making improvements there.
That solar-powered helmet looks quite fun - when I heard about it I thought it would be a gimmick, but the best tech is the stuff you don't have to think about and this ticks that box. You're right, it's an elegant solution
They should allow the mini aero bars used by ITU triathletes in the pro peloton, this will allow exciting break away riders to stay aero and safe but disqualification if you use it in the peloton if youâre following wheels, can only be used if you are on the front. This will keep racing exciting for breakaways and keep riders safe. Win win
I am really happy that Alex is joining the GCN team. He is such a nice and sympathetic person. Even if Olllie always annoys him, he doesn't put salt in his wounds (and there are enough: lost challenge of the hour record, being dropped...).
The two together are very entertaining to watch. I could watch them the whole day.
Thanks, Sebastian!
@@boliverfridgewater3140 Indeed, you two make a great team. Seems to me like youÂŽre brothers from another mother.
Find someone who looks at you the way alex looks at ollie đ€Łâ€
Folks at gcn, rather than rant about presentation of bike vault pics, why not run a short piece on how to present one's bike to it's best?!
And Ollie, unless your a pro, I don't think to many amateur riders could do what you did (does help with the support of gcn!) Amazing. Looking forward to watching more great content on gcn+!
Eddy Merckx run in Mexico DF, Ollie had almost two and a half kilometers of the atmosphere against him. I'm almost sure he would have done a better time there or at BogotĂĄ, which has an even faster velodrome. That's the most important factor in my view.
That POC helmet - reminds me of the joke about the solar powered torch.
S01 E01 of the Ollie: Why did he fail? Series was really good, looking forward to the rest of this seasons episodes.
If Ollie were to do it again:
- not getting ill in the run up would def help
- do the attempt in the summer so there's a better chance of favourable temp/air pressure/air density
GCN should allow people to make their own polls. I wanted to ask - is it truly acceptable to put Campagnolo Bora wheels on a bike that isn't Italian with a Shimano groupo.
They look so good but feel like if you haven't got Campy or an Italian frame at least, it takes away from the cool factor.
Funny show!
Great editor too.
I tried an hour of power on a local outdoor velodrome. Been riding for a while and I did it on my friends old fixie and some clip on aero bars. Got ~22 miles, and my seat was way too low so my legs were burning from lap 5. Iâm proud of my performance because I didnât have any aero stuff and the tires were at like 30 psi
Cracking effort!
Blame the outside weather for an indoor event! lol Love it!
I thought it was for the same reason that he got dropped in 4 man time trial race against Simon.
Someone skipped geography at school (you)
@@whatwelearned he blamed the weather not the location idiot.
Ollie Failed because he didn't want to lose touch with the rest of us amateur cyclists who would also fail and get dropped by a trio of ex-pro's. That fail was the first stage in a well-planned campaign to win the presenter social media following challenge.
I realize this is an old video now, but on a note about the Norway-workout: It's not just that it's based on a stage from Norway, you forgot to mention that Carl Fredrik Hagen is a Norwegian rider. So there, two reasons :-)
that Chris Froome bit was crisp as heck and destroyed my sides
Ban the super tuck! bring on the light weight dropper seat!!! Can't wait for trickle down of a cheaper light dropper seat pole for me road bike #Tallguystoo Conner knows what i mean.
Ollie definitely didnât fail. I was like 250m off in my guess. I could get the hints on what his ftp and CdA were (lead up videos and Ollieâs project 49), then I had to assume Crr and air density and the CdA calculator spit out the result. It was like two weeks out we had to guess, so I couldnât nail the air density that well other than a good guess for February. He did what his power and CdA allowed.
Coolest Italian brand is clearly Pegoretti. Not the biggest, not the most storied, but coolest -- yeah.
No mention of the e-racebikes of Scott and Orbea with the Mahle Ebikemotion X35 system hidden in the rearwheel hub? 40 Nm and 200 Wh battery in the downtube.
Hot new tech disc brake alignment toolđ€they've been around years
đ€ŠââïžI think Ollie just wanted to set up the Froome gag...
TBH, Ollie is Captain Normal. No pants outside bib shorts. He did really well considering his proclivity for the mullet
I get the data and speed side of the pros wanting to super tuck or puppy paw. I do find myself siding with the UCI on this one, here's why: both of those positions are extremely dangerous for us mere mortal recreational cyclists to attempt on roads we have to share, and having them no longer showing up in the pro peloton may mean that one less person sees it and tries to emulate it on their next ride.
Can we just have an episode of Ollie reading out love heart innuendos đ
Loving the biscuits
If you want to achieve the super tuck whilst seated, put a dropper post on your road bike. Will we see them in the peloton soon?
So if Ollie touches every cookie in the box, they all become his đ
20:40 Ollie just noshed Hank's Dad
Poor Ollie. You did great! Not everyone has next level genetics. You're a good sport!
I thought we were over this! Ollie, let it go........ or take it on again.
People i want to vote in the poll but I don't find it in the app, I'm in italy so maybe that's why, how can I find it? I went in the poll section but there's nothing about it
In regards to banning the super tuck: perhaps it's time to bring the dropper post to road racing?
Get Olly out to Mexico City next year (after COVID) to do it again
Trying is never failing
13:17 - Find a hill and test all these positions, please! #gcndoesscience
Passoni Titanium frames are đ„
Just watched the attempt on GCN+. I was ready to ridicule but, FAIR PLAY OLLIE!
Ollie mugged off again, loving it đđ
It was no fail, Ollie tried to beat the record of a legend. Ok, he got much better equipment then they had in the days, but the time he was up against is from Mercks!
He should train and prepare for one year and try again, maybe he could beat that time then. Anyway I enjoyd it, very nice try and very sympathic commentator anyway! :-)
Can someone please explain why the wind tunnel data seemed to say that hands on the hoods is more aero than either of the hands on drops position? Either I misunderstand the point of having drops or I misunderstand the data. Cheers.
Now that the downhill off the saddle position is banned itâs obvious there will be dropper posts installed until those are banned. A dropper post would be just as aero and much safer.
Just another try, ollie actually I just recall one great World champion of the hour in the 70"s Martin Emilio "cochise" rodriguez from Colombia and he says never give up' just another try"
the way those tires were glued is your answer, it was just atrocious.
Was your line on the track consistent? I'm sure this is can be a bigger factor than air conditions.
He didn't fail. He just didn't-cheat, that's all.
Merckx was a confirmed Doper, and there's no-one that CAN (or CAN'T, for that matter) confirm that Merckx wasn't already-doping by the time he did his Hour-record attempt.
Me personally?, I feel Ollie aced it.
Always there with ifs and but is our ollie in every challenge
Ollie, after the "experiment", must say -- good hair! ^-)
75mm wide bar in the drops? That's Super aero.
Just forgo the bars and grasp the stem.
Hmm, it might be just my thing, but @22:54 I personally do like some air in my tires đ
Hi, great result!!! đ± But, just to know, how many watts you were able to produce for the whole hour?
@@boliverfridgewater3140 after #gannaesciiwatt we want #bolivertelluswatt đ
Yesss the timestamps!!!!
oh i also see you have changed the pedal for the DMT shoe
With pro bikes potentially needing added weights to reach the minimum, why not utilize a dropper post to get into a near top tube tuck position?
I agree with "bike vault" assessments.
If you use the supertuckposition on a smooth road with good visibility it's no more dangerous than riding no handed. You need to practice at moderate speed first of course!
Did you follow a specific Zwift plan for the attempt or a customised one?
