  • Yes, we are growing peaches in Wisconsin. Two of our Elberta free-stone peach trees are ready for picking. It’s funny because all 5 baby peach trees sprouted from dormant seeds from our two original Elberta peach trees long gone. Three years ago we transplanted these baby trees to our orchard area and this year they are bountiful. Another Elberta peach tree we purchased from fast-growing-trees have peach that are still green and probably won’t be ready for at least another 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, we thought you’d like to see the harvest we gathered yesterday before the major heatwave of 115 degrees hit the Midwest today.

      Hi Julio, so much depends on when that last hard frost comes. Some years it is so late that no fruit is set even if we had some blooms. We are hoping that our warmer than usual spring will stay above freezing so we get apples and peaches this year. Hope the same for you. Our neighbor grows apricots and they have had booming crops in the past and are hoping it's the same this year as they are nice enough to share with us.

    You can sell them for a pretty penny. I just bought peaches at Sentry in Delafield. The bin was labeled as "Southern Peaches" and they were quite pricey. I assumed I was getting Georgia peaches. When I checked out, they rang up as "Peaches-Illinois"! Well, I guess technically Illinois peaches are "Southern" for us in Wisconsin. 🍑

    It’s sad I can’t get them to grow here and I’m only 2 miles from where I grew a beautiful peach tree.😢. I tried again this year, but the bare root that Jungs sent had some weird small root stock, I knew it wouldn’t survive right away. In 2008 at our previous house we bought one direct at Jung’s home office and it produced in that same year!
    The 3 rd time I tried 2017 here I bought one for my folks nearby and that one took off and was loaded, but my mom passed away and I was too busy to harvest and either the neighbor (somebody)or squirrels took them all.
    I sure miss my peach tree. I just can’t figure out why they don’t grow here. I think it’s too hot and dry.
    Today we hit 109*F despite what Madison reports. If this keeps up I’m moving. WI, Z5a.

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  Před 21 dnem +1

      Hi Casey, Yes, we had two Elberta peach trees. For years they gave us many peaches and eventually they ran their course and we cut them down. Every fall we would gather up any fruit that was on the ground to prevent any diseases.
      4 or 5 years later, we had baby peach trees growing where the old trees had been. It took that long for the peach seeds that we missed to escape from the outer seed shell and germinate to grow new trees.
      We transplanted those seeds and the trees are now giving us wonderful peaches.
      If a person cracked open the outer shell and took out the inner seed, I believe it wouldn't take 4 years to grow into a new tree. It would be worth a try to see if it would work for you. Make sure the peaches you use for seed are trees that live in your growing zone. We are in Zone 5b.
      Good luck and please let us know what happens.
      Thanks for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard www.WisconsinGarden.com
