  • Can’t decide where to go eat, or just don’t feel like throwing down a lot of money for a small meal? A buffet is your answer.
By paying just once, you get to fill your plates with as much food as you want as many times as you want, without getting any dirty looks from the staff. Not to mention, when you compare the cost of a buffet to a meal at your favorite fast food place, it’s much more economical to go for the buffet.
However, not all buffets are created equal. To help you get the most food for your buck, check out this ranking of all-you-can-eat buffet chains from worst to first.

@michael perry different suppliers probably. Even if they're in the same city, they can have different suppliers! Since they depend on fresh ingredients to make it (unlike McDonald's who sends their stuff in pre-made frozen), they have to have suppliers bring the food, and no two are the same because of that.

A few years ago I went to the Golden Corral in Tifton, Ga. on a Sunday. The line was out the door and most were African Americans coming from church. With all of them there I knew the food had to be good. OMG, I liked to have killed myself with food. I have never had better food anywhere. Now my hometown Golden Corral has stepped up their game and the food there is just about as good. The prices have gone up there but my town is growing and most places charge $15 or more for a meal.

CiCi's is BARGAIN BASEMENT KID's PIZZA Buffet. It is the only Kid's Night Out event MANY people can afford.....and so I'm glad it's out there for them. The chicken breasts are huge and hot with the perfect amount of crispness. The mash potatoes and gravy taste home made. The seafood is consistently good. Going at the right times is also very important for Buffets. Buffet foods will be placed on the steam lines slightly undercooked....because they will continue to cook under hot enough temperatures to satisfy the health department. If its a slow day or if one item just doesn't appeal....those pans of food will soon be OVER COOKED. Any buffet will be geared for "perfection" at the peak of meal times. You go early or late...."It is what it is".

How many restaurants that you like to go to.....have a value concept that encourages poor and illiterate people.....and puts YOUR potential food within reach of poorly behaved children......and had all the food ready to eat while you are parking your car? Now....what could go wrong with that? The problem is not with management.....the problem is with the behavior of the people in your town. The concept works GREAT some places......total disaster in other places. Rather than single out a very good "concept" for a negative review.....why not a short diatribe about modern parenting. You hinted at it....but that really is the problem, don't you think?

Worked in the kitchens at our local Golden Corral, Shoney's, and Ryan's in my youth. Wife worked at CiCi's. Of the four, Golden Corral had the least amount of pre-processed food and was the cleanest/best maintained. You actually learned recipes for making all the buffet items. I liked when they finally went with their open kitchen concept. You can view most of the food prep and kitchen from the dining area if you so choose. (I guess CiCi's has that too, lol) The Ryan's I worked at was almost 100's pre-processed frozen food. Almost everything came off a truck frozen. Shoney's was for breakfast or to order off the grill. Their lunch/dinner buffet was an add-on to an entree at best unless it was seafood night. Breakfast was good though, at least until the local Golden Corral started their breakfast buffet up.
Of the four restaraunts, only one is still open twenty years later. It's the Golden Corral. And I still eat there on occasion.

    My worst buffets are these;
    Golden Corral
Wyatt's Cafeteria (this location in my town closed down literally overnight without prior warning to the restaurant staff) back in early 1993.
Chinese Buffet- again like the rest this closed down pretty much after having been in business for only 3 months due to multiple health code violations and the fact that employees were chopping vegetables on the floor in the kitchen area and the restaurant itself wasn't clean at all.
KFC had a buffet in a town where I used to live out of state years ago. The buffet was standard re-heated leftovers and the employees frowned on people going thru a second time. It was quickly taken out and the location went under in 2012.
The best buffets I ever dined at in the 80's were Western Sizzlin and Bonanza, both of which are long since defunct.

They always had 4 types of pizzas (chesse, pepperoni, vegetarian special and non vegetarian special, an outstanding salad bar, the special entree for the day (vegetarian version and non-vegetarian) from the world cusine, choice of burger (including black bean) with side of sweet potato or potato fries, asian inspired section (with entrees like kung pao tofu, General Tso’s tempeh etc.) and a weekly sushi bar! Also open is a salad bar with fresh vegetables, meats and cold pastas, 2 different hot soups, and an always open (my favorite) yogurt bar. Breakfast stands for waffles/toasts/cereals (including vegan milk options) were always open. dessert bar usually included the best ever Mojo cookies, two special deserts (including to-die-for nuetella crepes with fresh strawberries), and fresh cut fruits. And dont forget the soft serve. All this for under $15/ all you can eat.

Golden Corral is fantastic! I just wish we didn't have to drive 2 hours just to get to one.☹

Thinking of ordering Chinese take out? Think again. I drove taxi in Toronto on Friday and Saturday nights while attending college. Received a radio call to pick up at take out order at a Chinese restaurant on Danforth Avenue. While waiting at the side kitchen door for the order, I saw two kitchen workers using a pail, situated right beside a crate of vegetable, as a urinal. Lot's of "splashing" onto the crate of vegetables. When done, they just "gave it a couple of shakes," zipped up and went back to cooking without hand washing. I left without the order and contacted my dispatcher who called the customer. I found out the following week that she was grateful that I did not get the order. True story.

I'm okay with all of the places mentioned. I've had bad experiences with most of them but it didn't stop me from going back.

There are certainly fewer of them. 35 years ago we went to Pipers in Walnut Creek, Ca. That place was really good with a large selection of baked goods, breads and muffins mostly. Closed now. An hour wait was not uncommon.

If you want to go to the Sizzler, in Mesa Az,
all the food is WELL DONE! Place burned
    down, about 6 weeks ago.
Golden Corral, (Golden Hog trough) has
breakfast here, from 7 AM to 10:30 AM.
If you get in at about 10:00, or a bit earlier,
the menu switches from breakfast to lunch,
and you don't have to pay again. (Breakfast
comes with free drinks and refills, after that,
you have to pay. But, if you have an empty
    glass, refills are STILL free.)

I must admit, Golden Corral is pretty good. Food is good but restaurant smells funny. I recommend you go about an hour before lunch. You get to eat breakfast and lunch for the price of one.👍👍👍

Yuck are you kidding? Ponderosa steaks are a joke...both size and quality. Their buffet is mainly frozen food heated up. I know someone who worked there. Mostly overly salty sodium overload frozen heated up food. A few decent things like their chili and chicken noodle soup.

One thing you have to understand when people go at a buffet they are not looking for five star quality food they are looking to get full for the cheap

Budget yes.....but it is very much a Family "Reward/Celebration" night for many of their customers. Other restaurants only DREAM of becoming a family "nostalgia" destination like GC is for many Americans.
