  • Judith Durham & The Boys having fun at a Luau for their TV special 'The Seekers Down Under'. The single was released in Australia in 1964, before their trip to the UK which brought them so many hits. It was written before Judith joined the group, about a girl who the Boys met on a working cruise. A verse was later added by Judith and some of the more risque words changed! I've used Digital Extraction to create a 'true' stereo version here - I hope you enjoy it, sounds even better with headphones!

This was filmed in the early days of the group when the Seekers were performing a traditional Australian welcoming ceremony for the visiting Belgian delegation. You can see some of the members seated, apparently enjoying the display, towards the end of the clip.
The meaning of the lyrics remains obscure. But they are thought to be those of the (now extinct) aboriginal tribe which welcomed the First Fleet when it arrived in Botany Bay in 1770.

Actually, I think that it draws more from the Hawaiian tradition of "Boat Day", when the Matson liners ("Big White Ship") would pull in with their cargoes of tourists bound for the (Matson-owned) Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and native Hawaiian boys and girls would come down to the Aloha Tower in Honolulu Harbor to earn some "throw money" by entertaining them with songs and hulas and such. This was a Very Big Deal from the 1920s all the way through the early 1960s.

You can actually look up where the song originated and it's indicated to originally refer to either the first fleet ie white men and Indigenous women or Captain Cooks white syphlitic crew and Hawaiian virgins.
I doubt whether the Seekers knew the origins. Many of the folk singers in the sixties sang either negro spirituals or traditional songs. For instance the Seekers and Oh Sinner Man. Or Pete Seeger with Henry My Son... an Irish traditional folk song warning of the dangers of children wandering.

I don't think they were/are aware of the original source. Given the 5 verses of We are Australian I pretty much think like many folk musicians in the 60s they have s pretty high sense of social justice to go with that undeniable talent... I'm not into cancel culture... what was in any era needs to be taken in context. Many folk singers had agents or managers who sourced folk tunes... and we know many folk tunes, nursery rhymes and fables had deep dark meanings.

Judith had NO problem singing and dancing to this cute little song - even during The Seekers "Farewell" tour. In fact The Seekers (including Judith) actually WROTE the song.

Not a good song. Not for the Seekers.

Certainly a different theme from most of their songs - it was written by the Boys about a real person they met.
