Icebergs Once Drifted All the Way to Florida

"It's weird to imagine giant hunks of ice floating in the waters off Miami. But that may have happened. While modeling studies by scientists in the past suggested that those icebergs drifted east toward Europe, a just-published article in Nature Geoscience provides evidence that the big pieces of ice drifted southward instead."

A United Arab Emirates Company Wants to Tow Icebergs From Antarctica to Combat Drought
www.sciencealert.com/a-united...
"Desperate times call for desperate measures, and it doesn't get more desperate than the Emirates Iceberg Project - a new plan to lug giant ice cubes halfway across the world to combat drought in the United Arab Emirates."

if we shave the polar bears and rub them down with sun screen then they maybe could live in the desert. plus we can hold umbrellas over them so they don't get too hot.
Bam problem solved. Where's my Nobel peace prize.
amazing
robert wisehart wow. can't believe no one thought of this yet!
robert wisehart My God. this is just as good as good as sucking the polution out of the air with a giant reverse leaf blower!
hey yeah all we need to do is point the exhaust of the air conditioners into the ground which will transfer all the heat th... wait a minute
no that wont work either
damn it
Won't the iceberg eventually melt??? How about the 21 million dollar cost of towing? Why not invest it in a facility that turns seawater into freshwater?
building a desalinator for drinking water was mentioned in the original script, but he didn't say it
But how about the iceberg eventually melting? Would the iceberg be meant as a permanent installation?
LagiNaLangAko23 UAE has already invested huge amounts of money into desalination and dubai produces around 98% of their water from this method
MrFredGamer
Yeah ok, 98% of their water is produced by this method... so the next logical step is to invest in icebergs? Why not just invest in it more, since it is said in the video that despite their efforts there are still water shortages in the region. The "98% of their water coming from desalination" is just a statistic of the COMPOSITION of their water source, it has nothing to do with the actual volume of water needed by the people of the UAE.
Example: If a hobo ate left-over short ribs, left by Trump on the street, he'd be eating almost 100% beef, but then he'd still be hungry because the leftovers were almost nothing but bones...
you know they could use the cheap tech Israel improved (70% of *drinking* water in israel comes from the sea) but that would mean that they'd have to recognize it, and i don't want to recognize the meany israel! even if it means wasting millions for a fucking iceberg
Why not build actual pipelines for fresh water?
They too could invest some money in better salt water filters.
RandomQuestion Perhaps we can eventually use gas pipelines as Water pipelines once we stop depending on fossil fuels :)
After all, There's already a gas pipeline network that connects the Arctic countries to Turkey. We just have to connect Turkish pipelines to the middle east.
You can't fit polar bears in a pipeline duh!
RandomQuestion they are going to build a pipeline that starts in Pakistan
A pipeline to the iceberg?
It appeared to be just a rumor, nothing of the sort is planned. they just put the idea out there. I'm from the U.A.E
liyer
The Cookie RoosterTM why would I lie idiot hahaha
idk for attention
k
Humaid Albreiki shut up, we all know you people are dumb as shit lol
This...this is a really...really dumb idea...like...really damn dumb
It's a cool idea -_-
Kamran Bashir But what's cooler than being cool? Iceberg.
Sam Mousa The money wouldn't, of course, be a problem for people like the UAE, but, it's just so dumb because of the environmental issues it poses and...wait what? An indoor ski resort? But why?
Dylan Titus so people can ski in the desert and not have to travel
+Abdulaziz Alhammadi they can go skiing in the sand, leave the icebergs alone.
Why don't they just build solar power desalination plants to take the salt out of the seawater?
Because that's not extravagant enough.
+Russell exactly XD
MrNihilist74 they r doing tht actually... bt this sounds more araby i guess
lmaoo
Oil. They get to use petroleum to tug/tow the iceberg. Alot of it! Building solar desalination facilities would keep the supply of oil high, and the prices low. So, I guess, money actually. Ironic isn't it?
*WE MUST EQUALIZE THE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH*
Ander Son that is the most stupid idea i've ever read
Ander Son you know that would be tragic
Not stupid they were combating global warming.
1SG no if he would equalize then a lot of speecies would die out
There are a few reasons why ANTARTICA should be freezing and why ISTANBUL Should be mildly hot. ANIMALS!
WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE THE UAE AND MOVE IT TO ANTARCTICA!
That's a way better idea XD
Stoked lol
Patrick Star back at it again
my mind was just blown.
Stoked and how would you do that?.
I mean how would u separate such a big land from a continent and move it to Antarctic?
Huh?
the iceberg would melt in months because UAE is a desert
Tech Era a desert is a place that rarely has rain(not necessarly hot)
for example
the biggest desert in the world is the south pole desert
Nope. The biggest desert in the world is between the ears of the regressive left.
Tech Era No, really?
hinzeePlaysDayZ yes
jeffiek lmfao this made my day
next UAE wants Hawaii Transplant
LOL this is should be top comment XD
G k this should be the top comment *
slimstylro This should be the top comment. *
SibylMadia.3260 1 this should be the top comment *
iTheGeek this should be the top comment *
Towing an iceberg? That stupid let's move the desert to antarctic.
ur smart i believe u re decendent of albert einstein
Antartica is a desert look it up
Antarctica IS a desert technically.
Shure it's stupid but hey they're paying:)
you just copied someone's else comment lol
Just so you know we did have a mention of desalination in the first version of this video! We did the math and even with the multi-million-dollar price tag on the towing of an iceberg, desalination is still *more* expensive. So while desalination is known technology and this is completely crazy, this would still be cheaper. But also crazy.
They should just invest in SpaceX and ask Elon Musk to drop space ice on them.
And create a space crater?
2Awesome thats the ideal situation
We'll think about it.
aim for the cities, they need extra ice there
I see what you did there 🤔
and my mom said i couldn't have a big piece of moon in my bedroom :( I wish my mom was an Arab.
Tell Me This I'm an arab and my mom gave me a samsung s8 plus😀
MR Arabic
Whats an arab?
Lol...crab...
MR Arabic
what in the world your gift has to do with the video, or even this comment ??
Cloudy Water Guess we can say both ways. We say the United ARABS Emirates, so why not just Arab ?
MR Arabic إيه إلي دخل مبيلك الجديد؟ عمرك عشر سنين يبني؟
and here we're concerned abt loosing our polar ice cap and global warming!
this idea is not real it is false news the owner of that company confirmed that. Like so everybody can see
"Real men don't take showers, they only bathe in the blood of their enemies." -Ghandi
JackBassett01 I guess Gandhi was looking for an excuse not to shower.
Stinky boi
gandhi sounds like a vampire
JackBassett01 I can't believe that's from Gandhi
Gandhi is the father of the Indian nation. He is one of the most powerful freedom fighter in the world. You can search on Google or wiki or CZcams.
The rest of us want to slow polar ice melt... the United Arabs want to speed it up.
another way to kill the infidels (and themselves too ;))
The idea started from a single company... the government said NOPE, since it's ridiculous.
Actually the floating polar ice doesn't affect water levels( Duh). If they can get uninhabited polar ice it doesn't really matter. The water levels rise when the tundra on top of greenland(land) melts and goes into the ocean. Stop throwing out the baseless claims, it actually hurts the scientific community.
KNO Nobody interrupted you. Feel free to finish your thought.
ExorcleGaming/Templates Explanation: the ice already floating in the saltwater is displacing roughly (not exactly) the same volume as it will add when it melts. Thus, when seaice melts it does not have a significant effect on sealevels.
it DOES however cause a small rise of sea levels, and if all sea ice in the world melts we might have about an inch higher sea levels.
I wanna iceberg for Christmas
"let's just take the ice berg, AND PUSH IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!"
Berg means mountain in Dutch
everything means something in Dutch . Dutch is a mix of english, german and other stuff. The word Berg is German.
BluBOo Dutch is based on german, English and French it's not a Combination
Iceberg is a partial loan translation from Dutch word ijsberg.
remilia scarlet the german word is eisberg.
BluBOo The dutch word is ijsberg.
I've seen some crazy shit in my day, but this takes the cake!
But why can't you just freeze a bunch of water in a giant freezer to make a huge ice cube instead of towing a fucking iceberg
What the Middle East needs is a science textbook.
Brandom The pop left is not any smarter. Gender ideology and women studies are not scientific, tey are even antiscientific.
A year 2 science book...
Maung Thant You mean the forbidden word?!? SCIENCE? *gasps*
Maung Thant Before that you actually need to watch the entire the video.
The plan is actually solid in theory & it is actually possible.
Joseph Ang so is religion
The UAE government never said any of this. and they are not stupid to think an iceberg will turn dubai into a forest😂
"A United Arab Emirates company" , if you listened correctly and read the description.
Boruto Shippuden look at Palestinians and israel
The Middle East is turning green actually.
This is how it would really go down:
The berg they got would not live up to the hype and actually be kind of small and uninspiring.
The towing would would fail several times in several ways before they got it going.
The seas currents and storms wouldn't cooperate nearly dooming the mission a half dozen times.
The berg would break free at some point and have to be recaptured, at least once.
One of the tug boats, in the tag-team of tug boats, would fail and be helplessly dragged around by the burg before they got it back under control.
Finally, the Iceberg would pull into port only to run aground and break into several dangerous chunks of ice.
The chunks of ice now endangering shipping lanes of several nations, are bombed and disintegrated by the US Navy.
The United Arab Emirates company files suit against the US for destruction of property.
Within two years the United Arab Emirates company goes under due to legal fees, cost overruns, and not enough income made from selling ice cubes and snow-cones made from United Arab Emirates iceberg.
And then united state of America comes to their country and give them freedom
LMAO
you didn't have to write all that only if you knew that this was fake. do a little research next time and don't believe everything. especially if its dumb. i know D news is a reliable source but this one is fake. the UAE also confirmed it was fake.
Ok
Caden Rolland ok
"Use it as a TOURIST ATTRACTION"
You serious bruh?😂😂😂😂
Was hoping to hear more about the possible effects an iceberg would have if towed to a desert. How long would it take to melt?
In Murica,You tow an Iceberg
In Soviet Russia,Iceberg tow you
what about investing money in solar power, build solar pumps and desalination plants? They have more money than they can use, they live close to the equator in the desert and ... what can go wrong?
Quran forbids such ideas
wrong. koran never forbid any ideas which good for human. but bible forbidden because bible said moon was rise and set and hurry back to where it's rise.
It's true that we have a sunnier environment, but it's also much dustier.
Solar panels don't generate that much energy, and if they got dusty they generate even less. And when you add the cleaning costs, it becomes not profitable.
bringing an ice berg is cost effective?
Domnic Uliyano Wilmut Zanthura
Nope ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
0:39 Gee, thanks, Trace.
acousticpsychosis I mean he's right
Hey, I'm awesome!! lol
I think this is a great idea... Clearly we're not melting our polar ice quick enough. Instead of bringing the heat to them, let's bring them to the heat! Brilliant UAE!
True floor is lava
Well that's a *cool* idea
Izz Muhammad 😵
I(ce) Agree.
Leave.
I think they need to chill.
This is a really hot issue and they may have an international incident on their hands if they attempt it.
i"ce" what you did there
omg, this is was my experiment!! thanks for featuring this. The original plan was to bring all icebergs in desert areas. Anyway, thanks!!
I remember this idea from the 70's or early 80's to solve drought in North Africa. As crazy now, as it is then.
I'm early lemme think of a joke...
NowThis
Jan Sanono WhyNot (aring)
Jan Sanono OHHHH
is this "nowthis" channel still alive?
Sagar well not really, it hasn't uploaded anything in 2 months or so, and they took over another channel, which also hasn't posted in three weeks
Jan Sanono bum
Ammm would it not melt?
Cape Town faces a water crisis; the worst in a century.
Maybe we should try it.
How about ice mining? Set up a ice smashing operation in the Antarctic and load the ice onto a super freighter. Nearly the same amount of ice but it could be refrigerated and moved more easily.
That's a great idea 💡- it's much more sensible than the seemingly insane plan to tow an iceberg all the way to the Middle East.
There always doing crazy tallest building richest city and now a ice berg in the middle of the desert I say let em do it no one else is doing anything interesting i would like to see this actually happen
Why, it's not even an accomplishment, it's just plain stupid and impractical.
Squiddi Ummmmmmmm I think it would be an accomplishment when has any other country done anything like this they want it as a trophy to show the world how rich they are that they can have a big ass ice berg towed to them
+DON'T READ MY PROFILE PICTURE Just because no one has done it before means it would be an accomplishment? Lmao, no... No one has done it before because it's absolutely retarded. If any country actually wanted to do this they could...
Squiddi cool bro 😂
+DON'T READ MY PROFILE PICTURE So you've been engaged in a conversation and when someone replies all the sudden you shake it off like you never cared. Jfc...
This is actually a rumor. An engineer just came up with this idea that an iceberg might help cool down the UAE which also leads to formation of clouds and rain. The proposed idea was not intended to have "fresh water". Plus, if it were to be done, we would use more than a boat to tow, logically; to decrease towing days, cost, and increase lifespan of the iceberg.
Just imaging iceberg water, sounds so refreshing lol surprised no company has done this...yet...
I think it's brilliant way to avoid raise level of oceans water and in same time bring water to deserts and make it green again .. i wish it spread to collect all ice from Antarctica to all deserts in planet
Let's get the Middle East underground.
How about towing middle East to Mars -.^????
how bout towing them to venus
im with you please get me to mars we are good with dessert
How about another dimension.
But then we couldnt use the mars when we got there. Send them to the sun, they're used to hot weather
steven hawxwell but carry them to the Sun when it is nighttime and give them sunscreen or it wont work ;)
Just curious, what about installing propulsion directly on some huge ice berg like the one that is about to calve from the Larsen C ice shelf? Seems like at 5,000 sqkm it would be stable for long enough to make the journey?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's thought of something like this
I live in the UAE but hate it
Traxxas Dude same here
Traxxas Dude you hate the idea or the Country?
hopefully both
BrainCoolo // Reichtangle Mapping country
Traxxas Dude you're probably a peasant... That country is made only for rich people
You guys excited for Pokemon UltraSun and UltraMoon?
ye, boi!
YES
completely unrelated but completely needed
wish it was for switch instead
are those the real names ? wtf
YES!
Happy to see you guys again.
yup.. I've heard about that about two months ago, they want to do that by the end of 2017. I'm still kinda skeptical, since I live in the UAE. I look forward to seeing how that thing is gonna hold up during the summer
"Antarctica is melting! we are running out of ice! i know, lets bring it to one of the hottest places on earth!"
or you know they could just cooperate with Israel and make fresh water out of sea water but i guess the health your country isn't that important.
*wait..... will it not melt???*
Future Not for a long time. An iceberg would prolly take a few weeks.
It will melt....thats the thing
Stetson Graham And what are you supposed to do with it in just a few weeks?
Future I’m sure they would put it in some place not leave it in the ocean which can get polluted more
I read that in a book once. They made it a tourist attraction. There may have been a dome involved...
Poetic indeed, *+Trace*. Like chilly, oversized chickens, coming home to roost.
But if they take a big chunk of iceberg, wouldn't that let all the water in the world to spill into outer space?
family girl yes because were all dumbasses and believe the earth is flat.
Wtf how does water go into space
skrt skrt its a fucking joke
I lost a whole 20 million brain cells reading this
Can you get tf off the internet, it triggers me how fucking stupid you are 😷
These Arabs don't allow Goldberg in their country why would they allow an Iceberg
Say what?
To chill them out :)
It's doable, and from a UEA perspective might be worth every penny, but if they are undertaking such an endeavor they need to synchronize several factors to make it worthwhile. They are essentially engaged in terraforming and building a new ecosystem. The iceberg alone does not do the trick, they need to combine it with planting, with solid dredged from the ocean bottom, and most importantly they need to first build giant desalination plant and irrigation paths to distribute the water all over different spots in the desert, then they will have to start with vegetation that is native to desert and oasis areas, and gradually expand those areas, and over a couple plant generations let them plants feed the soil and ad more water. only then bring in the iceberg makes sense as you will already have created soil and plants which can hold water, will already have distribution of water throughout the land area, what the iceberg will do for you is melt and then condense forming lake areas, forever altering and eliminating the desert. You you could turn the desert green again as at one time it was green in the past. But you do that you will change weather patterns such that maybe you alter the thermohaline conveyor, and now Europe becomes cold and dry.
thank you Brewster's millions😃
When we tried building the tallest skyscraper they said we were crazy, when we tried building the fastest roller coaster they said we were crazy, when we tried building an Island in the shape of a palm they said we were crazy.
Why can't Americans learn to never doubt the UAE/Dubai?
Those are manmade things which we can control, the difference with this, is that all this would do is melt since u can control the temperature and make the sea level in the area rise (depending on the size of the iceberg)
Rasdeep Gill they go to US and they buy your women with cheap price because their women is expensive..and look at us all rich people and people with supercar and mansion is all arab
Ali true
Rasdeep Gill it's the opposite
jimmy laa we have largest navy in the world "who runs the seas ,runs the world" and yeah it took us long to kill those terrorists becasue we dont kill innocent people like them. if we just nuked all of the middle east we would have killed them a long time ago hahahahah. so go hide terrorists
Fuk it let em try it. It's not like anyone else is doing cool interesting weird shit in the world. Sometimes you just gotta take a child-like approach to things and see what happens.
+Han Solo I'm sure he did
'see what happens' lmao, it's going to melt 100% quicker wtf else is gunna happen
Icebergs are pretty big, and as we know the majority of it is under water meaning that there will be a cooling effect even in a warm climate. They can also theoretically mitigate some of the melting by covering it with a giant reflective sheet.
AlphaOmega that's a dumb idea
As someone who was just watching the world burn, this is just what we need.
Wow never thought this was possible
That Iceberg would melt in that heat😂 great idea
dude. iron your shirt. please.
Lets use some common sense, a huge waste of money for something that will melt
Which is why it's a perfect idear for the United Arab Emirates:)
D,X I was expecting him to say "...and thank's for watching DNews."
I am a citizen from the UAE, and yes, this idea popped up in the news for a bit but later the gov't scrapped the idea and said that this was false news, it may have been a nice idea but it's not exactly practical.
First comment eyyy
aaaaaaaeeeeeefuckyoueeeeyyyy
Cam Larsen don't
I want Dnews plus / seeker plus again! I miss it and have been waiting patiently for too long!
“Play ball with this idea for a second “
..goes on for 3 minutes and 20 seconds.
Now thats what i call high quality H2O!
Can you guys do a video on someone who tries to condition their body in exercise while "learning" how to take in less calories. I'm curious to see what would happen.
Pretty sure there was an episode of Futurama that was about this. Replace putting an iceberg in the desert with ice from a comet in the ocean.
Is there ever going to be a Seeker Plus like the old DNews plus where you went on deep dives on very interesting topics, They were really Cool!!! Would you please consider bringing them back?
Poethic justice! That's a good one :)
Thanks for the 30 second unskippable ad.
Interesting how long that little paradise around the berg would last, near the heat of the desert. Like a year tops?
something related to the video. is it safe to drink water from an iceberg? or touch the melted water from an iceberg from the antarctic? what kind of ancient virus could have been frozen inside the ice?
Damn, makes me wanna watch Avatar again. I’m referring to the episode where they visited the Oasis with the iceberg.
"Iceberg dead ahead!" "We....are in a plane."
I love how they lugged the wheelchair out to the middle of an empty grass field to observe its new non-desert appearance. It's all very practical.
I live in the UAE, and heard this on the radio a few weeks ago, and it's completely ridiculous
I live in Dubai and the company also mentioned that this iceberg will improve the weather. The wind will cooler in this way according to them.
I actually laughed like in a movie were they are making a plan and some guy hysterically laughs
Towing icebergs, sounds possible but I'm just bothered by the journey. I mean the ice melting once its halfway towards it's destination, will anyone be on watch or keep the gigantic icecube in a freezer or any cold space in case of melting has occurred?
DAV charley lol, skared of hakks yet don't move berg. Camping I abhor, do something
1 ton of ice is actually a really small amount. The density of water is 1000kgm-3 which is a ton per metre squared. Ice is less dense so would be slightly larger than a metre cube
That's pretty cool, it would bring more water
I love your vids trace. 👍 lol
Have you heard about the air company that delivered an iceberg to a wealthy desert prince by towing it behind a plane? I think their name was "Higher for Hire".
Bring back Seeker Daily!
next idea, towing a comet to Earth's orbit and harvest the ice for cocktails...
This can be interesting experiment. I hope this will have only good implications on environment.
My solution: pump sea water into a canal enclosed in a green house to evaporate into unsalted water and the brine being finally pumped onto a salt flat or underground to create salt caves. The Sahara and Saudi Arabia peninsula could be transformed into transformed into major crop producers and retirement destinations.
shape the iceberg like a boat and push the berg dont pull and put reflective material on top so the sun dosent melt it and if you wanna go all out put a bunch of sails on it
They have crazy ideas!!!!! I have to give them that.
It is surprising that even NASA was serious about iceberg towing. It is quite simple to understand that when the iceberg is brought from the colder polar region into the temperate regions it will melt. No need of evening trying. Just pull out a icecube from your fridge and see what happens in the next minute.
Trace, your pun game has reached a new level.
This reminds me of the movie Brewster's Millions (1985) with Richard Pryor and John Candy.
If my teachers had this presentation style I wouldn't have gotten past kindergarten.
