It may sound really dated now, but it's hard to express just how groundbreaking this was when it first came out. It was the first ever mainstream hip hop release and most people had never heard anyone rapping to music before. This really was revolutionary.

This song is in the Library of Congress being culturally important to music. I was 8 years old and we'd go crazy hearing this. My poor mother had to hear this over and over-then SHE got in to it as well. Good memories
I can still recall my white suburban parents dancing and singing along to this song in our family room during weekend parties. To add some perspective, my Dad is 85 years old now.
This was lifted off Chic's "GoodTimes" so they sampled really early as well.
Technically they didn't actually sample it, they just played the same song and rapped over it (with instruments). Sampling didn't happen for a few more months, lol.

Also in 1979, when this rap song was hitting the scene, so was Prince with I Wanna Be Your Lover, and Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album was on top.
M pop music .The Buggles Videos killed the radio star,, Funky town . Were all released in 1979 ,, 1979 may have been the biggest year ever for the music industry

I am 54. This was the first song that got me dancing in 5th grade. Never stopped dancing since.
I was 10 yrs old when this came out. I remember seeing them perform this on Soul Train. I was blown away. Sitting here listening to this - memories coming back - dancing in my seat. BJ had the groove going! ML&R

When this song first came out, the Sugar Hill Gang did this song live for promotion at my Roller Rink; Roll-A-Palace in Brooklyn, NY; was an awesome experience for a 13 year old!!!! I can still sing every word!!!!!!!!
They layed down the blueprint for what was to come 👍….not just hip hop but a lot of.different genres of music and styles was created back then during the 70s and 80s…..lots of creativity back then

I was 11 when this song came out and everyone went crazy over this song. I live in the Midwest. I live about 2 1/2 hours from Chicago. In my area nobody ever heard this type of music. In Chicago they were already listening to this new "rap" music. It was a phenomonal time to be young! So much great music came from hip hop! Old school rap is and will always be THE BEST!!
Most of the music back then was about having a good time.. in all genres... There was some political stuff but most was about the party.. wish we could get back to that

I was in 6th/7th grade when this came out...it changed everything. We taped it off the radio with a tape recorder..memorized every word. I STILL know most of the words..it's just in my brain hardware now!! It was revolutionary.
OMG! This song takes me back to my high school days! We had never heard anything like it before and we couldn't get enough of it. Looking back, we had no idea we were experiencing the birth of an entire new genre of music.
This one NEVER grows old!! Imagine; I am Norwegian and grew up in the countryside of north of Norway , just a teen then in 70-80ties- and even I KNEW this song and got hooked in rapping, HipHop and Streetdance!! Even got a SoulTrain-fever!! This song was my start of this music genre (the lyrics!! LOL), and even today- well grown up- it has made my way into Kpop!! Thank you guys for reacting to this!! Stated it all!! Without this, Rap wouldn't have went as mainstream as fast as it did. I was a yr old, but when I heard this yrs late, it lead me to KRS-1, RUN DMC, LL Cool J, & the Slick Rick's of the World! & it was a WRAP (or should I say RAP) for me, from the on!

Roller skating to this, Strawberry Hill, Blonde, and several others that seem to come out roughly the same generalized time...childhood memories for those of us who grew up in the golden age of 70's and 80's... They would play these on college radio over the weekend, right after Punk rock & New Wave hours...music explosion and due to the new at that time MTV, music video explosion.

This and oddly enough Blondie were the first to bring wrap onto the charts. It opened the door for beastie boys and Run DMC and after that the doors were wide open.

And yes lol their lyrics were wild, they were freaky in a good way :) Also could you please react to Apache by them(even though it always reminds me of Will Smith and Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air entering a dance contest and they played this song) Keep On Rockin'

This was 1979. New York radio DJ Gary Byrd released a record in 1972 or '73 titled "Soul Travelin''" on which he did a similar style rap in tribute to the music acts of the day. The audio of the record is available on CZcams.

This song gave us the phrase "hip hop." This song was ON FIRE back in the day. People calling radio stations or going to record stores kept asking for the "hip...hop" song (the first words of the song). So it became known as that "hip hop" song.

This came out when I was 3 & captivated me as it was a huge hit here in the UK reaching number 3 in the singles charts, among a mostly white population such as myself. Even my father who detested all rap music that followed liked it. I found rap lost the fun, the funk & the creativity around the mid-late 1990's for the most part.
I'm 59 and I can tell you without any doud, that Rapper's Delight, I was only feefthen, has been and will be for always the greatest jam in the rap music. Still today when I listen it once more time I'm astonish by the perfect timing of those three guys, I just can say WOW, the time has gone but this work by Sugarhillband, will never sunset. Thanks..

Before this you had the Jamaican toasters, U Roy being the best and I think it was DJ Kool Herc who said that without the Jamaican dj's there would not have been hip hop. You have to do some U Roy, he's brilliant.

This is the beginning. I bought this LP album when it came out took it into my high school band room and played it on the turntable. I have friends that remember me for turning me onto the first rap. I am a 58 year old funky Caucasian. I have always been with the groove, with any music but this hit me strong. Love it. Now listen to some Teddy Pendergrass, please.
