  • The maintenance of a Hybrid Har-Tru clay court with a red brick dust surface.
A green Har-Tru Clay Court can be converted to a red European style court with the proper instruction and materials.
The benefits of this conversion is certainly the beautiful orange/red color, but there are other hidden aspects that should be noted.
The red brick dust seals off the green Har-Tru which means the original surface now becomes the base or court foundation. Now all of the wear on the surface is absorbed by the red top coat. This will contribute to the entire court lasting longer before any major work.
Another feature that seems to be apparent is that moss and algae does not like the red as much. The PH of the material is not as conducive to organic growth, thus less early spring time organics growing around the court surface.
The surface will be a little softer which means the court will play slower. This characteristic simulates the European style courts.
An additional benefit of this type of conversion is the court does not have a tendency to get rock hard. The red is just dust material which sits on the surface held together with water.
With this type of conversion, the yearly spring maintenance is mandatory. The red brick must be renewed each year.

    Hi John,
Besides Napa Valley what are the other clubs or centers you converted to clay?
Some places where I play, I'd like you to convert theirs in southern cal to red. clay. Two places already have green clay and I know one other that is interested but concerned about the costs.
