Clay Tennis Court Maintenance

Clay Tennis Court Maintenance: This video shows how to modify a standard clay court maintenance tool and make it more effective. Sub-irrigated clay courts along with indoor clay courts have a tendency of getting extremely hard. In past videos, I have demonstrated a machine ( the Venus ) to loosen up a hard, crusted clay court surface. This video shows how to maintain the court after this major ...
Bocce Ball Courts - Rebuilding

This video shows the process of rebuilding 4 championship size Bocce courts in Napa Valley, Calif. in the Town of Yountville. These courts were originally constructed with an oyster shell ( flour ) playing surface. The oyster shell material is a nice playing surface but is also a great fertilizer and over the winter months the moss and algae have taken over. The Town of Yountville decided this ...
Har-Tru Tennis at Ray's Lone Pine Tennis Court Club

Ray's Lone Pine Tennis Club is a unique backyard Har-Tru clay court located in an older established neighborhood in Sacramento, Calif. Local building codes only allowed him to build an 8 foot high fence around his court. He took that limitation and constructed a simple but taste full and well built fence. Both ends have a curtain type fabric that pulls to the side to allow the court to be compl...

It has a large banquet area and a private wine cellar. This c...
Clay court maintenance - European Red

The maintenance of a Hybrid Har-Tru clay court with a red brick dust surface. A green Har-Tru Clay Court can be converted to a red European style court with the proper instruction and materials. The benefits of this conversion is certainly the beautiful orange/red color, but there are other hidden aspects that should be noted. The red brick dust seals off the green Har-Tru which means the origi...
Clay Court Maintenance
zhlédnutí 5KPřed 12 lety
Clay Court Maintenance - Clay tennis courts or bocce courts sometimes develop a hard crusted playing surface. This video discusses how to break up that hard layer. A rock hard surface can develop on many different types of surfaces. Any indoor clay court will have the tendency to form a very hard crust. Once this crust or "scab" is formed it is almost impossible to cut through much less remove ...

Can you please tell me if the scraped up material has to be removed or does it just get spread back out?

Thanks for the video. We have 2 har-tru courts in our subdivision. They were renovated 7 months ago because they had a lot of moss and really hard and compacted areas. These courts get very little play as in maybe ten hours per court each week. I was the person taking care of the courts however since they were renovated I lost interest in playing and no longer felt any responsibility for volunteering my time taking care of the courts. I visited the courts two weeks ago and saw that they looked just as bad as before the renovation. Moss and hard areas took up more surface than decent clay. I just received this rake and it is great. I added a bunch of weigh to it which makes a huge difference. I still have a big problem trying to break through the hard crust that has developed. Can you offer a tool for getting through this? The stainless brood might do it eventually but it will take hundreds of passes and we can't afford the power unit from the other video. Thanks

will limestone screenings or HPB gravel (High Performance Bedding- granite) work instead of red brick dust?

I have brown clay court (not HarTru). A de-thatcher (power rake) works good to grind up the top 1/4" - 1/2" of clay. This works great to freshen the clay, get rid of algae, etc. You can run the power rake with the lines off, or you can run it with the lines on if you REAL careful. They rent the rakes at Home Depot. Takes about 4 hours to do the whole surface with the lines off. Go one direction, then over again the other way. After the raking the soft loose clay will need to be flattened with a long straight edge (aluminium ladder works ) and compacted with a roller. Court looks brand-new when done.

Hey fool, oyster shell is 36% calcium, that is not an idea "fertilizer" for algae. In fact the algae will thrive on most any surface in the wet Nor Cal climate. While brick dust is "sustainable" it is foul a crap to deal with in dry weather. It will stain almost anything, so people working on bocce courts where brick dust may contact with other stone work or concrete are usually going to very unhappy about the result. Additionally brick dust absorbs a huge amount of water, as it dries out it cakes up with a substantial white cover, the left over sodium.....so while brick dust may be a good option for some people....it should be the last option. Before brick dust, use red decomposed granite or red crushed stone fines if you want a red color.

  • @rimcanyon

John - just before the brick dust was applied the video mentioned the court was "lasered in". Do you use a surface laser, like the Bosch GSL2, or a line laser that you measure down from at various points, or something else?

Hi John, Besides Napa Valley what are the other clubs or centers you converted to clay? Some places where I play, I'd like you to convert theirs in southern cal to red. clay. Two places already have green clay and I know one other that is interested but concerned about the costs.
