  • A Classic ride in the High Peak! The route starts near the Fox House Pub, on the Hathersage Road. (A6187) SK 27022 80530. It is a mixture of gravel, tracks, open moorland and quite roads. Towards the end it traverses three amazing grit stone edges, Froggatt, Curbar and Baslow. The views are stunning. It does require some off road skills, I would class it as an intermediate ride.
    I found this route on the Sigma Sports website: www.sigmasports.com/hub/guide...

    You inspired me to make a couple of journeys up to Derbyshire last year, and I can see me making some more this year. Thanks Julie, great video 👍🏻

    Thank you for your video. I have not been this way for a long time and have ridden most of it. I started riding here on holidays in the early 80's on a Holdsworth touring bike, did it all on 27 1/4 tyres. Back then the Long Causeway was rocky and horrid to ride so we used to go down from Stannage Pole on the bridleway through Stannage Plantation to the road below. I used to be able to ride that bridleway without putting a foot down.

    • @JuliePhelanExplore
      @JuliePhelanExplore  Před rokem

      Lol! Thats fantastic . The Causeway has been flattened eh? I used to use it as a bit of 3 Peaks training - a bit of riding plus carrying.
      Sounds like you were a 'Rough Stuff' rider ! Respect. Thanks for your great comments.

      @@JuliePhelanExplore Yes I was a rough stuff rider and still ride off road like that today on a standard road bike with mudguards, carrier, saddlebag and lights. I really must make time this year to ride your route I'd love it especially a coffee stop at Longshaw lodge.

      @@autisticlife thats brilliant. I must admit I find riding gravel relatively easy but this is a woman who has ridden Paris Roubaix on her road bike etc..... we have a good skill set eh? However you can ride all this rough stuff so much quicker with bigger tyres. I am about to fit some 45mm tyres to my Camino and I'll be up on the mtb routes lol !

    I acquired a gravel ebike last year and live in SW Sheffield so have started watching your videos. I have been along the Houndskirk Road and found the stones pretty chunky in places, which made for interesting riding on 38mm tyres. I guess that’s the PD for you! The second or third time I went along it I put a tear in the front tyre hitting one of those chunky rocks edge on. So I am all ears about where else to go!

    • @JuliePhelanExplore
      @JuliePhelanExplore  Před rokem

      I think one of the issues is your bike will be much heavier than mine because it’s an e-bike. Also you are probably heavier than me so on 38mm tyres it will be much easier for you to bottom out on rocky terrain. I wonder if you could use wider tyres?
      Based on what you say you could park on the Thornhill Trail; ride up to LadyBower and Holden Reservoirs and ride round.
      Further south, in the White Peak you could ride on the High Peak Trail; Monsal Trail plus the Tissington Trail . Have a look at the video list. There’s a simple High Peak loop. Need anymore help please ask. :-) Have fun.

      Subscribe to the Sheffield Gravel FB group. They may be able to suggest some easier gravel near you. I am wondering about The Trans Pennine Trail?

      @jeffroberts6865 Před rokem

      @@JuliePhelanExplore Those are good points about weight. I am pretty heavy these days! I replaced the 38mm tyres with knobblier 42mm tyres which is the maximum the bike can take. It’s slower on the road but a bit better on the really chunkier stuff. Perhaps I need two bikes…

    • @JuliePhelanExplore
      @JuliePhelanExplore  Před rokem +1

      @@jeffroberts6865 well people say the number of bikes we need = n+1 :-) I have 45mm tyres on my Camino and I love them. I can ride where ever I like. I have bikes with narrower tyres if I want to be a ‘speed merchant’ . Good to talk to you.

    Always a joy to ride up there along the edges, it's clear you share that joy 🤣. It's my go to ride from the door, or park near Curbar gap if I'm feeling lazy or short on time. I nearly always go the opposite way along Froggatt as a result. It also makes more sense on a full susser that way as it's DH 🤣. Respect for the gravel riding. I also detected a bit of love for Houndkirk. It's like the Peak District superhighway. I just released a video showing some of the more MTB focused trails up in the area.. check it out.....if you want to obviously. 👍
