Modern Psytrance Bass Processing & Tone-Shaping - With Vital, Native DAW, Kilohearts & Free Plugins
just the idea of splitting the harmonics into 3 oscillators blows my mind - absolute fantastic work dash, thank you
This is so smart. All of it. I don’t even make Psytrance but will absolutely be obsessing over it
Diopser is a good replacement for disperser
Never would've thought to phase disperse a psytrance bass! Love Ur videos always
Totally! I actually featured it in a recent video about my favourite free plugins! Thanks for watching!
@@DashGlitch I'll check it out 🔥❤️
This is deep bass science bro 🙂 Before I got in to Psy I never could imagine how much work actually goes into a "very simple" bass line.
found this stuff like 3 years ago, glad to see its starting to get out there!
One way to make bassline that you can tune freely is to use instrument selector as arp by putting it to round-robin mode and duplicating bass to four lanes, and use repeats device to clock it. From 1/4 you probably want to delete the synth most of the time, and fundamental can be dropped by tuning step 2/4 settings. I like this way the most because it is re-usable and it is easy to re-tune the settings on-the-go. It is sort of like param lock modulation in some synths and grooveboxes alike approach :-)
With FX selectors you need only one instance but keeping three instances is not that hard for CPU, and is not a huge job to maintain, give maximum tunability (even different synth for different notes) and is generally pretty resistant to human mistakes :-) E.g. just by mistake you could have velocities wrong in the MIDI sequence.
Actually with well implemented synths (Hive, Serum, Phase Plant) the cost is the same as with just one plugin as they are not played simultaneously so it is zero-cost in practice.
Who needs Masterclases if we have you Dash Glitch?
This is by far the best and most detailed bass design tutorial I’ve ever seen. Thank you!
This is ABSOLUTE GOLD! Thanks for sharing Dash!
I had already got to the point where I was adding a separate sub oscillator to phase plant, and editing the wave table to knock out specific harmonics on layers.. but hadn’t thought about aligning each layer to fit the phase of the kick better. Thanks for, as always, adding that final bit of extra spice to complete the recipe!
dude, masterclass.
Thanks!
Very nice technique again! I would love to see a techno pitch bass done with a similar technique (progressive trance ) that would be cool !
After years of following you I'm glad to see you put a touch of stereo on the high band of your mono elements, it's great on kick as well, alternatively a short delay with no feedback, panned can give you more control over the amount of width of the effect.. anyways, thanks for all the great content, very scientific 👍
So funny I came into that post ringing issue myself after your last tutorial and I came up with almost the same solution!
Khearts suite such a versatile and flexible plugin collection and it feels it can be even more in the future development.
You are such a genius Dash! You have really done your homework on this one, very insightful and clearly presented! 🙏
Just the video I need.. I have a wierd click in my note changes and not a controllable one.. Lol. Thanks Dash.
FreeFormPhase and bitwig modulation on Depth give as an interesting gummy base effect. Nice
11:40 Exactly this. Compressing a sound you are synthesising unless there is an explicit "randomness" to it that you want to easily bring into order or shape, or you want the specific tonal or distortion characteristics of a compressor to colour your sound is just ... well I think missing the point slightly.
Its funny seeing people use "transparent" compressors as essentially a volume knob on a bass sound that they are synthesising.
🤯🤯🤯
Well, at least I know what I'm doing fir the rest of the day!
Genuis
Great Video Dash!
I use 8 serial allpassfilters(in FL), really gets close to the disperser (specially if modulated at audiorate)
Same with 2-3 Eq Threes in Ableton. A few fabfilter Saturns with 5 bands should also do the job. Or any multiband fx.
Best bass processing video I've seen so far! Thanks man
why do i always feel stupid watching your vids ? - hrhrhr - good input - thx so much
Wicked Sir! Would you apply this technique if you'd (unlikely I know) use a kick with a longer sustain/decay?
Yes, maybe remove the sub layer from the first hit
I actually never used lfo tool. I always put some type of volume knob on the Mixer channel and draw the desired automation curve and copy paste
great stuff!
Phaseplant starts at: 21:40 (for my own convenience)
super gangsta tutorial! 🔥🔥🔥
Hi, could you help me, I can't put ozmegascope in bitwig, they are always in separate windows. I've tried everything but I can't see them combined.
ilove youuuu s222 the best !!!
in the plugin there is a switch for seperated/combined view
Stupid question. Since this Bass and Kick are interlaced, and it's crucial to get tone, phase, duck and all this precisely like you are showing it, to the decimal number. Why there is no KICK+BASS synth that does it for you automatically, setting up perfect kick and bass correlation in one plugin? There is NI TRK-01 plugin, but I doubt it is as precise as this method. If there is any other, please, let me know.
so u figuered it out ;). its pretty much exactly my method. i call it kind of phase distortion what happens due nonlinear multibandsplitting. vitamin does a good job on it. what happens is a psychoacoustic masking effect. It alternates the saw wave due the shifting of the single phasepositions of the harmonics. u could modify this by going through shifting the phase bins of a normal saw in the wave table editor. that would be the real nerd version ;) also try using famous "saw" waves from legendary synths.
i haven't experimented with disperser, but there's a freeware plugin called 'allpassphase' that is supposed to do the same thing. and i don't think i'm using it correctly but i'm going to be persistent until i can determine what it is doing or under what circumstances.
Can we have the same video on serum please just to be sure about what's going on
When using the LFO in snapheap for sidechain do you also have different velocities on the notes specifically the first bass note?
I don't often do it because I prefer a stable rhythm but some people like the kbBb kbBB style which requires some velocity variations
Would love to see a bitwig version of this video.
this is it though?
@@DashGlitch Sorry, I mean in the Grid.
Cool video!
Dash, SunVox updated to version 2.1, are you using it?
Heya, does Bitwig's Disperser tool compare at all to what you do with the KHz's one?
Bitwig has a Disperser?
the multiband processing can be anything that is multiband, like a multiband compressor(ott, reaxcomp) or saturator(fire)? if yes, just stack them to obtain the phase change like disperser?
Yep
@@DashGlitch thank you :)
why is it that in a lot of trance it plays the same note the whole time? i’ve always wondered this, i figure you’re the best one to ask this
Repetition is what puts us in a trance state ;) like chanting, or beating a drum
@@DashGlitch I guess I just needed confirmation then ;) Thanks! Well awesome video I actually learned a couple things that I knew about for a while but haven’t spent the time figuring out the how’s and why’s. Nice to have it all in one spot too, awesome 😎 🙏
❤️❤️❤️
Why you don’t use ozcillos in combined mode like protoculture show us , in that mode you can see bass and kick in different colour and see that there is no phase invert
I did...
i have a question, how to make straight lines in phaseplant wavetable editor?
Right click the points to cycle the mode
@@DashGlitch saved my ass! also while using curve and modulating cutoff for bass in phaseplant i get irregular clicking even though phase randomization is off ):
When Splitting The frequencies it messed up the waveform i mean the combined waveform of the splits was different to the Original one. To avoid that i split the sawwave first and then dispersed the individual ranges with the same disperse settings
The summed result is the same if you use harmonics and not EQ, identical to the point it will phase cancel. Try it
@@DashGlitch How do you use harmonics? I clicked harmonic editing every time. Its eitheir replacing all frames of the wavetable with the first one or distorting every frame but the first and the last one
@@sizo1072 try use the filter, in high-pass steep slope :)
every modern psytrance bass is same boring
And yet you're watching tutorials to learn it? lol ok dude
What do you do after you've bounced kick and bass to audio tracks? I now have two audio tracks for kick and bass and have put the audio segments in place inside the arrangement view. Yet I have no idea, shall i leave it as audio tracks? Should I use sampler tracks and drag the wav files into the sampler? Do you use drum machine? If you keep them in audio tracks, can I somehow group audio "segments" over 4 or 8 tacts to make them easier manageable and also loopable?
I'm not following here, most of this video is with midi clips
@@DashGlitch hehe yes I'm sorry :'D you're right... I will look for a good audio-forum for this question. Shouldn't have posted this here, it's more a general question and only related to your video because it's about kick and bass. Thanks anyway for following up :) Great VOD!!
@@psy237 I'm saying I don't understand the question because I don't talk about rendering to audio in this video
@@DashGlitch Yes I know, that's what I meant in my answer, I shouldn't have asked the question here ;) Don't worry about it, I'll put it into an audio forum somewhere!
