Can separatists in West Africa strongarm their way to independence? | DW News

  • Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of a separatist group calling for an independent State of Biafra. His followers call themselves the 'Indigenous People of Biafra' and they've not given up their dream of their own homeland in southeastern Nigeria. The region has seen a surge in attacks, with some 130 police officers killed this year alone. In May, Nigeria's security forces launched an operation to quell the violence which many fear may lead to a new war.
But the conflict between Biafran separatists and the Nigerian government is much older than this recent outbreak.
Meanwhile, reports from Cameroon indicate English speaking separatist militias have joined forces with their Nigerian counterparts. A development that has led to fears of an acceleration in violence. The Biafran secessionists and the Ambazonian Defence Force in southwestern Cameroon share a common border, and a joint purpose: to establish their own states. They say they are already sharing weapons.
One way to defuse the crisis in Nigeria would be good governance. Yet for some in the region it was actually the election of President Muhammadu Buhari, himself a veteran of the Biafran war, that reawakened calls for independence. Now the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu has only heightened tensions.

Well, there are far too many failed states in Africa, with South Sudan being the latest in a tsunami of tragedy. I don't think Africa needs more countries and I doubt these ethnic states will be any more successful or viable than previous newly-created states. Anyway, the world is moving into regional states: the EU, ECOWAS in West Africa so forth. That's the future: regional and then eventually continental unified states. Only a united Africa can solve Africa's myriad problems. Furthermore, it's fallacious to purport that since Yugoslavia disintegrated, the states that have emerged are doing well. You are overlooking the unresolved ethnic tensions and wars that have been fought by the newly emerged states.

In both cases, the growth of separatist sentiment was avoidable. Cameroon completely marginalised the Anglophone areas. Thanks for your in-depth understanding of what is going on in Nigeria. It shall be well with you.
The same marginalization that caused the Biafra war is still going on with impunity.
After the civil war, there was 3R’s recommended after the civil war in the south east which is reconstruction, rehabilitations and reconciliation till date no government both past and present has made any effort to address the root cause of the war. Or to implement the 3R’s recommended.
But the most unfortunate thing is that United Nations especially the so called world powers kept blind eyes over 3 million people that were massacred during the Biafra civil war.
So no going back Biafra will surely come to pass no matter how long it takes to achieve it.

Yes being the third largest group in Nigeria and hosting so much natural wealth in their land the Igbos have all the right to ask for more political representation in the country. They are also some of the best educated in Nigeria. I know lots of Igbos as well. Good people. But I am not sure breaking away is the right thing to do. I know it's extremely tempting given the current situation but make no mistake there will be enormous challenges. For one expect enormous infighting as is the case currently in South Sudan. It's Africa we are talking about here. But yes I understand their frustrations and believe that change is badly needed. I just don't think breaking up is the solution.

Correction: Nnamdi Kanu never "jumped bail". Few days before he was to appear in court, some overzealous soldiers went on a reckless, lawless shooting spree in his home community, just like they did recently at Chief Sunday Adeyemo's house in Ibadan, and also when youths from all over the country attempted to organize a protest in Lagos in October of 2020. They killed scores of people and heaped up their dead bodies in bushes and rivers. Everyone saw it, but looked the other way, because it did not yet affect them at the time. Of course, the authorities dubbed these killers "unknown soldiers" even with clear video evidences making the rounds. If they had killed him on that day, he would have died like a chicken, because the same lies would have made the rounds. If you were the one in that kind of lawless circumstance, be honest, on what basis would you still believe you were safe? So, he managed to escape to save his life first. Still, the lawlessness in the southeast region by law enforcement agents did not abate. Please, get your facts straight. As you can see, even in the latest drama, the day Nnamdi Kanu was supposed to be arraigned in court, for no apparent reason, the law enforcement agents took a unilateral decision not to produce him in court. The judge simply bowed low and accepted their decision without any questions or sanctions. These are some of the facts of the matter. But, of course, political correctness keeps everyone from saying it blatantly the way it is.
