  • The Port of Stockton has hired Aquatic Harvest to clear the green congestion that is known as water hyacinth. This invasive plant species floats on top water and inhibits ships and boats from passing through the Port's waterways. The Port has also authorized Aquatic Harvest to venture to downtown Stockton and clear the water of water hyacinth in the city as well.

    crush the water hyacinth with a machine until it becomes small at the time of harvesting, if it is wet it can be used as pet food, if it is in dry form it can be burned and can be printed in the form of bricks sold as a substitute for firewood

    Yes, just harvested water hyacinth is an excellent substitute for imported hay. California dairy farmers should be able to buy this stuff at same price as hay imported from Nevada and Utah.

    Can be used as animal feed as well, especially during times of drought.

    It makes great animal feed for chickens, ducks, cows, pigs, goats... It really helps pack on the pounds for farm to market animals. I would contact some of the local farmers markets for contact info on farmers looking for a great food source.

    They make good compost. Just have days in spring and summer for people to come in and scoop up the compost.
    They might even pay a small fee.

    If they are growing that fast that means they find a lot nutrients in the water, basically nitrates and phosphates which is agricultural runoff pollution. If we let them rot on the river banks they will again release these nutrients back to the river. We should find a way to use them as fertilizers and prevent agricultural runoff pollution.

    The water hyacinth will never go away if the water pollution still occurs. Can see factory nearby in the video.

    • @danielrose1392
      @danielrose1392 Před 6 lety +3

      Main cause is water pollution by agriculture. When it rains, a lot of fertilizer and nutrients are washed into the rivers, now letting the plants grow there.

    A lot of people are talking about the value of hyacinth as animal feed. The reason it's a problem is because it failed as an alternative livestock feed. It was imported for that purpose but animals find it unpalatable and it has a low nutritional value, even when fresh. In its native range only specialized species feed on it. These guys are doing a major ecological service by cleaning it up.

    I never can understand how it even survives central valley winters. I try in the bay area to grow it in ponds...always dies over winter, even frost free winters. Never survives. Does it start with seed in spring in the valley? Because in winter there is nothing but dead Hyacinths along banks over there.

      Even if seems dried, it'll grow again as fresh hyacinth once you put it on muddy waters. But never use herbicide on it.
