Omg I am not lying, seriously I was just listening to "how to save a life" as it is my all time favorite song ever, no words can ever describe how much i love this song and how emotional it makes me!

This is The Fray's best song. Really like how they talk about these songs and some of the formation briefly. One thing that caught my attention was how this was apparently the album closer at one point (they said the "last track" on the album) and that it was even shoegazy and chill at one point.. oh man I would be so interested to hear that version of the song. No doubt the final version is a masterpiece but that really caught my attention. Fascinating, would be fun to hear that version.
I like how they keep the meaning of the song a bit vague so you can still give it your own meaning

So the meaning of the song, the guy worked at a camp and there was a guy with depression and drug issues, there was no manual on how to help him so he didn't know what to do

I remember the first time i watched the music video it was my birthday and my parents had a huge fight so they forgat my birthday and we didnt celebrate at all, i cried the whole night while replaying the video over and over again.

You can see how the song truly makes them feel by how they keep trying to disperse energy by making jokes or scratching themselves and how they avoided talking about it on any deep level.

As a middle schooler about to go to 8th grade. When I was in 7th, November 5 2021, a boy from my school got ran over outside. I never knew him. I just wish I knew him. I just really really wish I could've saved him, but the moment I got off my bus I saw everyone screaming and running to him. And everyone was crying. He died at noon. And I cried for weeks. If only "had I known how to save a life" is my quote forever now on. Please I hope he is okay in Heaven.
I can't explain how much I love the song. I don't know, maybe are the words, how I feel when I'm listening or maybe because six months ago I was so sadness and I felt like a piece of shit or whatever and the song could me feel better with everything around me.

when I listen to this song alot of memory's come up to me. like how I did save a life and what lives i couldn't that where out of my control I still remember when I was a teen how i saw two people jump off the saint john nb Bridge, one was when I was on a bus coming home from school early and the other was on my first Valentine's Date. we were watching the reversing falls rapids. I still remember this like it was yesterday and then when I was 17 I ended up trying to kill myself becuase I couldn't deal with life anymore I ended up meeting someone in the hospital I was there for a week and I got to discharge the day before Valentine's 2012. I still believe that if the hospital would kept me I would have saved a life. the girl I met in the hospital I made a promise to I would never hurt myself again I would never try to do what I did again and we would become friends but on Valentine's Day that year in our Hospital someone took her life. and then again in 2014 I save my own life. I remember I was having complications with my pregnancy the doctors didn't believe me and I had to fight to find out what was going on I fought to save mine and my own daughter's life. I remember this unique moment. I don't know what happened but I know I was under anesthesia having my little girl. because of the complication eclampsia I remember waking up in the O.R before being put under to a nurse or dr telling me you gotta pull though they thought I wouldn't make it. after all that I remember is white. like light. the most peaceful thing in my entire life happened in that o.r room. after that I woke up in a dark icu room to someone so happy I made it though and told me my daughter made it though too. after that my bf came in and I could tell by his face he was relieved. he also didn't believe me I was going to have our baby that night I knew I was and I beg him to stay and his father convince him to stay. it all still crazy remembing this and he saved my life that night. he caught me as I was falling when I took a seizure. so yes he knew how to save his wife. we all have crazy story's and we all thank you for this song thank you so much and sorry for my story being all over the places. I'm trying to write this while our two year old is taking tantrum fit.

What’s that? You thought they were going to tell you a meaningful story about a friend who needed an intervention? Naw…. This song was written by someone who was stuck in a studio and happened to find instructions on how to perform an intervention and then basically put those words into a song. We aren’t getting ish from these guys. Moving along.

And all this mumbo jumbo -- that oozes trying to "look cool" -- is supposed to suffice as an "explanation" of "How To Save A Life"?
This interview just further confirms to me that which I realized from when I first heard the band's song "You Found Me" wherein is the blasphemous -- yes, blasphemous -- lyric about "God smoking a cigarette" or however it is worded exactly -- this band The Fray was messed up spiritually & is just another musical group that made efforts to make inroads into the "Christian music market" by pretending to be Christian & sprinkling a bit of Christianese here & there in their songs, all this being done while looking forward to when they could come out as secular. Supposedly the lead singer Isaac Slade got the idea for the song from a dream wherein "God" looked like "Bruce Springsteen" & was "smoking" & yet, even with all those indicators that the dream was exceedingly off, he didn't realize that it was a dream from a devil or devils. Do I really need to explain why these notions of the song are amiss & demonic?
Relatedly, I should note that the same malevolent being, namely Satan, whose name means "adversary," who tempted Job's wife to "curse God" (the hint that she herself did that is that she was encouraging her husband to do it) is the same one who attacked Job & was subsequently giving Job tormenting dreams & influencing Job to believe that the attacks & dreams were coming from the Lord God Almighty.
For properly interpreting The Book of Job & for interpreting & coping with the adversities that are sure to occur in this present life, I wish that people would see & lay hold on the truth in Isaiah 54 (let alone in Job itself wherein the book clearly shows in its first two chapters that Satan was trying to get God to Himself smite Job & God repeatedly refused & then Satan proceeded to attack Job) wherein Yahweh says to His servants, "They [i. e. 'enemies'] shall surely gather together, but not by Me; whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for that sake." And, oh, just in case someone cannot appreciate the thought of this verse or the "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper" one in the same chapter of Isaiah because of misunderstanding the part about the blacksmith, etc, all the Lord was & is saying is that obviously the creation, in this case the attacker, is not greater than the Creator & so, though the attacker may choose to use his or her consciousness & inherent abilities to attack, He as the Omnipotent Creator is able to intervene & bring the malevolent efforts to naught.
Clearly these guys are not theologians, though, or otherwise spiritually perceptive, &, for that matter, neither are their wives, considering they said their wives were singing the chorus as "how to shave your wives," which deficiencies are all to their detriment. Here it is the guy on the far left has something that looks like a beer in hand (& don't any individual ignorant of the facts chime in to say, "Well Jesus made water into wine," or, "Paul told Timothy to drink wine, " because in both cases, according to the Greek terminology & the contexts, the beverages being referred to were merely fruit juice & not a fermented, alcoholic beverage), & the lead singer brings up, among other things that have nothing to do with explaining the song "How To Save A Life," about what their wives were singing, & then the other one who identifies himself as the drummer employs a worldly expression that not only comes from the heart but clearly is meant to, like the rest of their expressions, distance them from the "Christian" identity they supposedly started out with. Indeed, the lead singer Slade tries to forward the idea that they are uncomfortable with the song "How To Save A Life" because it is so "dark," but it more feels like their uncomfortableness with the song more has to do with that it was one of their first from when they were trying to portray themselves as a "Christian" band.
I sincerely pray you guys of The Fray sincerely read the Holy Bible, though, & especially the NT's The Book of Acts of the Apostles (e.g. rf. 2:37-39; 8:12-17; 10:44-48; 19:1-6; etc) & therein see what it took & still takes to become & stay an actual Christian while passing through this temporary present world.
Just noticed that the band member on the far right likewise has a brown bottle that appears to be a beer.
Clearly they were trying in this interview to distance themselves from their "Christian" beginnings -- so don't fault me for taking notice.
The song does not have to necessarily be demonic. It may not be the best set of lyrics, but if you attempt to listen to the song as a complete piece, just like you should with the Bible, you would realize how harsh your judgements are. If you are such a Christian and you understand that this band may be secularist, why don't you attempt to see their point of view? At the end of the day, they did not mean to offend or hurt anyone. If you understand that this song may not have good messages, do not continue to listen to them. It is that simple.
