  • Just bought a 69 Crestliner Runabout with finicky 1970 70hp Johnson outboard. It just took some cleaning and regreasing of all throttle and shifting linkages, then tuning in of warm-up lever and idle screw. Runs sweet now! See you at the Matoska boat launch!

    the idle speed screw you are adjusting at 1:20 needs to be done in the water, with an accurate shop tach, and the throttle cable DISENGAGED or you will not get it to run with absolute consistency. Sure, you can get it close, but really the synch n link procedure needs to be followed in the correct order. this motor is so clean! thanks for the video love to see these old girls out there!

    The prop says 13 1/4 x 17 on it. It's got quite a bit of power.

    Don't forget to take apart the remote control box. The grease inside it can also cause reaction issues.

      Yep. Thanks. I took that apart too and cleaned it a greased it.

    I have a 75 model but no where near as clean as your motor. How did you go about cleaning it? Does the boat run well now? My boat doesn't rev out to 5500 rpm. Do you know what the problem could be?

    • @johngwenzel
      @johngwenzel Před 2 lety +1

      I cleaned all the gummy throttle linkages with lacquer thinner, then used a Mercury brand marine grease to lubricate. Then everything moved smoothly.

      I do have the boat still, but it's a ways away from me and I can't remember where the spring is. Maybe try searching for an old manual for your throttle? You've probably already done that.

    Does the thermostat have to open before water comes out the two holes??

    • @johngwenzel
      @johngwenzel Před 4 lety +1

      No, I don't believe so. The water will run through the engine and simply bypass the thermostat when closed.

      John Wenzel should there be a lot of water coming out the two exhaust ports?

    • @artbentley8594
      @artbentley8594 Před 4 lety

      I don’t see any water coming out of your two ports, is that normal?

    • @johngwenzel
      @johngwenzel Před 4 lety

      @@artbentley8594 If you have the earmuffs on the water intakes, then I adjusted the water pressure at my host spigot so the water isn't just flying out under the rubber earmuffs. So, then, the same amount of water will come out of the exhaust ports as you're putting in. You should have decent water flow, or engine could overheat. You don't want to run it too long like this just in case. Real engine repair guys use water tanks, and not the ear muffs. If you aren't getting much water coming out, maybe your earmuffs aren't snug. Are you sure you have the muffs over the intakes? I suppose there could be blockage?
