- Today I shall be doing a full walk through of Melbourne Etching Supplies, which used to be Neil Wallace Printmaking Supplies. Just after I posted this video, Neil Wallace's website has been deleted, so I guess it is pretty much entirely MES now. This is their Fitzroy Store. They had a paper sale in June, which is my main reason for visiting, but I figured it would also be a great time to do another Art Store Tour! I hope you enjoy it. 😊
This is Episode Five of Art Store Tours. I have a playlist of them all, and you can watch these in any order as they are stand-alone videos.

This was fun, thanks!
That was a real feast for the eyes. Thanks Becky.
Glad you enjoyed it; theirs is a lovely store!
I'm grateful that they let you film, their store is gorgeous 🥰🥰🥰
I'm happy to have toured this shop; it's one I've visited over the years and have really enjoyed.
I love watching and being a part of your videos. I am a printmaker. You are right etching is apart of the larger field of printmaking. It was exciting to see the store.
I need to learn more about printmaking; it looks really fascinating!
9:46 Wooden boxes are indeed very hard to resist!
Impressive art shop. So happy they let you film. Fun cat tour as well! I live in the woods a tiny cottage on a Lake Barkley (I work from home) - very isolated so I don't often see all this goodness; thank you for taking me along
I'm glad you enjoyed it; I love wandering around art stores! 😊
This was so much fun!💜💜💜
Ohhh the senniler oil and pastel sticks..and the brushes..sighhhhh. your right you cant have enough brushes....lol...thank you for showing this store lovely supplies and art supplies looked so organizedand beautiful..,so lovely..
It’s a great store…so much lovely stuff! 💙
OMG, how wonderful is this store, I probably should have closed my eyes while you were walking around as I now have more art supplies “I Need”, thanks for that 😂🥰💐💖
Haha, if it makes you feel any better, I had to exercise serious restraint to not buy more things, and just get the paper I went in there for. Well, ok, a small box of pastels, but otherwise I came out empty handed! 😂
What a great store! Those short Raphael travel brushes in the roll look really fun.
It's a cute little set, that one! I'm glad I found it again as I'd stored it in a Safe Place and promptly forgot where that was. I had to search through a bunch of places before I remembered. 😂
Wow what a beautiful store! I’d have to take out a second mortgage if I was to visit. I’ve never seen such a well stocked store and it was so neat and clean. Thanks for the trip I’ll be dreaming in waves of beautiful colors tonight.
It really is beautifully arranged, with so many tempting things! ❤️
@@BeckyTregear you showed great restraint! With so much to pick from it would be pretty overwhelming I imagine.
This video just made me wish to be in that store with a wallet full of money to spend on brushes that I can’t find in my country 😅 What an artists’ paradise! The illustrations are so inspiring too
The brushes are all so tempting, especially the Isabey stand! It's a great store with lots of fun things to look at. 😸
As a student who majored in printmaking that art store is amazing!
I’m glad to know! They really seemed to have a huge range of printmaking supplies. 😊
Hi Becky, I just love your art store tours. Thank you for doing this one. Well, i was late watching your video as i was hospitalized when you put your video up. I got cellulitis in my left leg and foot which then turned into sepsis. I also found out i have congestive heart failure. Anyway, I was discharged from the hospital yesterday and i have brain fog. I am so exhausted. Anyway, thank you so much for posting your wonderful tour of all that loveliness.
Oh my gosh that's soooo scary!! I really really hope you're going to be ok? Please take care! ❤
Yay field trip!!! 🥳🎉
Yay second 😂
@@awatercolouristwell done awatercolourist!!! Have a piece of cake 🎂 🍰 🧁. 😃

I enjoyed seeing the MES/Neil Wallace store. I've been a mail order customer for etching supplies and water colour paper for many years. They have a huge paper sale twice a year and that's the time to stock up on paper. I am on their email list so get notified twice a year about their sales.
I haven't done print making for a few years now due to lack of access to a press. I used to do etching, lino prints and collagraph. These days I mostly just do drawing and use coloured pencils or I work with watercolour and oils. I did acrylic painting for years but prefer oils and am getting used to watercolour again. I loved watching your progress through the shop as I've never been to their physical stores.
I don't often get there because it's quite a drive from home, but every so often I'll be in around Fitzroy and of course have to go to the shop, heheh. This time I went because of their paper sale - it's such a great time to stock up! Printmaking sounds expensive, haha.
@@BeckyTregear Printmaking can be expensive to start but the supplies, other than paper, tend to last a long time as you don't use up much with each print. I started it as a way to get more arty copies of drawings. I could buy a small press. The expensive bit is to pay to go to classes so you can use the press. I could join a printmaking group and use their press but it's been a few years since I did any and probably have forgotten lots by now.
This is the stuff of dreams. 🤩What a cool shop!
Omg, Becky! I had never seen so many Sennelier products at the same time ! They are made just an hour drive away from where I live, but the local art shops never display so many at the same time even if they are popular here of course.
Yes, I remember the first time I went here and was amazed at the Sennelier displays! Oh wow, you live so close - do you know if they have factory tours? And...do they have a factory outlet store on site or nearby? I'd be there in a heartbeat if they do!! Well, aside from having to book plane tickets etc...😂
@@BeckyTregear I am sorry I did not answer any sooner😞. Yes, there are factory tours and I think I will book one soon! They don’t seem to have a proper shop at the factory as it looks quite old. ….If you ever come, don’t look for a place to stay. You would be very welcome here 😃
We had a June paper sale on Strathmore over here in the US too! Over here it's more for getting ready to go back to art school and such, but I was still able to get some good paper on sale. And also- Sellenier is such a good brand! I just wish over here in the US it didn't come with a tax on it. I have some of Sennelier's Heavy Body acrylics, acrylic Inks and watercolors. It's such a nice brand. Also- OMG they have gouache?! I wish they would sell here in the US! Love the tour. It's always fascinating to me to see what're popular art supplies across the pond.
We have back to school sales here in January, haha! Strathmore is available in Australia, but not at the levels it would be in the USA. It's really difficult to find the 500 series here. 😭 And yes....they have gouache! I literally only realised this when I was looking at them in the shop. I'm not sure if they're new, or I've never noticed before....? Anyway, maybe I'll get some one day to try!
@@BeckyTregearStrathmore 500 series is really hard to find here in the US too sadly.
@@melissaaldosari8024 Wah! 😭
I love window shopping with you! I only have sale offerings from Sennelier or sample sets, and hav3 watercolours and oil pastels. My last purchase was a little wooden box of half pans with a drawer underneath, with not much in it other than a watercolour graphite stick, and a bit of paper for a colour chart. I will either put other half or full pans there or maybe some neocolour2’s . The box is beautiful and I am a sucker for boxes!
What a lovely shop, plants of choice for all kinds of artists. And for framing and hanging too. This is the bit I rarely ever get to doing!
I really loved that little brush roll, was it Rafael shorter handled brushes? I wonder if they still do them like that? I admit to being a sucker for quill brushes, but try and buy synthetic these days.
I also adore cats, we are nurturing an abandoned cat at the moment, but it is so furry that we are not sure whether it is a girl or a boy, though we suspect it might be the latter. A very gorgeous creature anyway ……
Aww the cat sounds adorable! And yes, the small brushes are by Raphael - it's a fun little set! Wooden boxes are very hard to resist. ❤️
So jealous
I do printmaking. It is expensive & you need the appropriate equipment and ink. I do relief & intaglio. The thin oriental paper is used for relief like woodcut or linocut. Printmaking paper is sized differently than watercolor paper. You chose one of my favorite brands of printmaking paper. I enjoy how it feels. Printmaking paper is soaked for an hour or so before you use it for printing your etched plate.
Your watercolors will be absorbed into the paper quickly. They will not move well. You might use your watercolor pencils on it & then add water. Some printmakers use watercolor to add color to their edition. You can use your colored pencils on it as well. Experiment and enjoy
Oh awesome, thank you so much for your advice, because I have no clue about the nuances of printmaking paper! It looked and felt so nice I just had to get a piece. I do have a basic printmaking kit which I haven't opened yet, so I think I'll have to get that out and see if I can carve something and print it onto the paper. Why do I get the feeling I'm in for an expensive time in the future if I enjoy it....😂
You have no idea how much money you save me by filming these store tours instead of me going around them. I really appreciate you taking the hit for me 😂 I think I may having done an etching at high school a loong time ago. We drew onto a metal plate with a special pen and then the plate went into acid. We did that a few times to make the image and then made prints off them. My Dad was an electrical technician and he used to etch his own printed circuit boards. The process was very similar from what I remember. The places you mark with the pen are the areas the acid doesn't mark. I still have the plate and the prints somewhere around if you want to see them?
It sounds like an interesting process, I'm always open to learning new things and seeing cool stuff like that. It looks to be another expensive pursuit, haha!
Very cool, and so neat and tidy! :)
Yes, a lot neater than the chaotic stores of Greece. 😂
@@BeckyTregear that’s what l was thinking 😂
Hi Becky, we get into an altered state in art stores. Love from San diego.
It is a good state to be in! 👀
That place is my dream store! I would spend sooo much money on all of the printmaking supplies! Ooh cheaper etching inks. I really need a press lol
I was looking at it all thinking "I don't need a press, I don't need a press..." 😂
😆🤣 yeah that would hve been me, i would have prob tried to come up with a payment plan lol
This was fun. Thank you for sharing. ❤
there's so many really interesting supplies here, this seems like a great art shop ❤✨
I like it a lot!
The marker pens by senniler that you refer to that you don’t know of is just a 3-D puffy paint with a pointed nodule that the paint can come out of,
Ok cool, thank you! I hadn't paid attention when I was filming that part, lol.
I went to blick last week and only got 3 erasers and a small pack of arches…I realized I do not need more watercolor….or pencils, or pens or just anything…let’s just say, I better live a long freaking time so I can make a dent in my watercolor collection! I might buy another sap green and sleeping beauty turquoise from Daniel smith at some point…but not right now…
I am with you there...we need to become vampires so as to live long enough to use all our supplies! 😂
City stores don't really have that much anyway. I order from stores if there is something I want.
I want that oil painting set 🤣 I don't need any of though. I love my paints, but I don't have a 'cute' set. I have more than enough of everything I have and still keep buying more 🤣
Haha me too! The oil painting set was the most tempting item for me as well...that wooden box is gorgeous.
Can I ask price? I personally don't know much about the brand, other than its professional range generally. I'm guessing it's $400 range but I could be way off 😂
@@lozantoninocreations I can't remember exactly, but I'm thinking it was in the $400-$800 range. A bit too eye-watering, lol.
@@lozantoninocreations Ok I just looked it up: $505 to be exact. So you weren't far off!
I'm so envious of the art stores you visit!! I truly love wandering around with you, I'm like ooohhhh and arrhhhh, the DS watercolour paints omg!!
I do love wandering around art shops! Oh wow I hadn't heard anything bad about Khadi - I'm going to have to find my stash and test it out to see if mine misbehaves as well.
I’ve heard of the Magnani 1404 paper before, but I’ve never seen a review of it. It would be nice if you‘d review it (if you wish). Magnani 1404 also makes watercolour paper blocks.
I’ll see what I can do. 😊
@@BeckyTregear Thanks!
Thank you so much! Love the tour… but kind of very envious at the same time ! 😂 I’m in WA and we don’t have anything great at all! Hopefully I can come to that side of Australia for some art shopping 😊
Edit… have you been to or shopped at ‘the artist warehouse’ … I saw a few things there and wondered if you have tried them before?
I know of the Artist Warehouse but haven't shopped with them yet...they seem to have some good stuff though!
@@BeckyTregear thank you so much! So they are trust worthy?
This is heaven (*-*)
