  • Why is mining gold one of the world's most destructive industries? From Ancient Egypt to today, the precious metal has held a special value in society. Can the industry clean itself up or should we get less precious about this particular metal?

    We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

    Gold is used in electronics because it doesn't corrode, not so much for its conductivity. Copper and silver are better electrical conductors than gold, although those metals can easily become corroded, which is why exposed metal contacts in electronic devices are usually gold-plated copper, to prevent galvanic corrosion.

    Honestly, you just look at anything that is made and sold and you see the same essential story: the social cost of making that product isn’t baked into the cost that we pay. Therefore, we’re not incentivizing the world to pursue processes which will not have less impact on the local citizens and the climate.

      2) my wife mentioned missing roller skating so I got her some roller skates for our anniversary. We spent the whole summer going to our roller rink, taking lessons, and inviting friends out. In fact, now that we’re decent skaters and it’s winter we’ve gone ice skating a couple times as well!
      3) got my in laws a date night at a local comedy club one time.
      I’m sure someone will be able to find some reason why every single one of these technically has an environmental impact, but I’m also sure that that impact would be less than what is described in this video for gold.

You can also choose to source gold from Canada, for example, or other countries you know are more responsible, which you mention. I think another point you could also have brought up is how industrial mining has reforestation programs that kick off once the mine is closed. Tailings ponds are also being phased out in favour of paste backfilling, which is not mentioned on the report.

    I went into a cell phone store and there is this one guy that I knew was sneaky right from the start. I looked at this guy and I said I will take the old SIM with me and he argues that it'll be useless. I said once again I will take that Sim with me cuz it has a lot of data stored on it. Before we moved on I had to say it twice more. I want to take the Sim with me meaning it'll be in my pocket while I walk out of the store. And then I asked him if he what I mean by the Sim being in my pocket when I walk out the door. I saw somebody take a SIM from another customer and they saving them by the bread bag full just for the gold on the contacts. Most cell phone salesman are like shoe salesman highly commissioned and not trustworthy for the most part I'm sure that only 40% are good people.

      @jerryg50 Před rokem +1

      If you were going to change the SIM card, it would have been best for you to remove it from the phone before entering the store. Then you can trade the phone for a new one. Tell them you are keeping your old SIM card and will not give it to them since you are buying a new one.
      There is so little gold on a SIM card, it must be in the micro-grams. The guy would need thousands of these cards to get any viable gold. Some of these guys collect SIM cards to get the data from them more so than what gold they can have from them. Retrieving the gold from electronic circuits, chips, and etc., is a long and expensive process unless being done on a massive scale.

    I had a box of old gold jewellery from inheritance that was not ideal for me to wear. Maybe a total of about 6 ounces or so if that much. I took this gold to a local jeweller who I know custom makes rings and various types of gold and silver jewellery. It was a mix of different carat pieces. I asked him if he could put all the gold together and melt them down for making me some newer rings I would like. I told him I was not critical of the carat of whatever I get. He made me a number of nice rings. They look good to me and I like them. The average carat is probably about 14K. I don't plan to sell them. I like to wear them. Because these are not from registered gold and properly carat graded they technically have very little resale value if at all. They have no marking on them.

    If you want to reduce the demand for gold, then make politicians, financial institutions accountable for their bad financial policies. That would reduce the value of gold. When gold dropped to US$264 in the mid to late ninties, gold mines were put on care and maintenance. No demand no exploration.
    The only reason gold price is high, it is reflecting how deep in the toilet our world economy is. It is a safe haven.
    I have worked on gold processing plant around the world. Some are working with grades as low as 1 gram of gold for 1 ton of rock, so huge amounts of rock is moved.

The USA doesn't need to buy from Africa, China, or South America where they destroy the environment to remove the gold. To put things in perspective, 20 tons of mining waste is not actually that much. A cubic metre of dirt weighs about 1.25 metric tons, so if a single gold ring results from just 13.33 cubic metres of dirt, that's a pretty good deal. To be clear, that's a pile of dirt 3 metres wide by 4 metres long by 1.11 metres high. That's a backyard vegetable patch.
    The graphic shown in the video is grossly misleading, as it depicts and outlines an entire lake, which would weigh many thousands of times that 20 tons of "mining waste", which is mostly just dirt, of course.
