- Gimbals Vs Warp Stabilizer, IBIS vs Digital SteadyShot - what really gives the smoothest footage? In this Episode of Film Science, we test every kind of camera stabilizer and look at the mechanics of what really makes smooth footage. We cover everything from Feature Recognition and the problem with Warp Stabilizer to why Gyro Assisted Stabilization might not be the answer to everything.

the best quote "if it's easy everyone will do it"
The production quality on this is sick. Came from insta shorts, keep it up!
Thanks Elliot! Glad ya enjoyed it 😄
Great breakdown! Would love a second video showing the test footage and calling out the flaws and quirks of each camera
There are some missing pieces. Post stabilization will always be better than realtime/in-body software stabilization. You have way more computational power and you know the "future". However, the gyro data is always useful is best combined with optical flow tracking (not either or). With that, you can even tape an action cam on your red komodo as an IMU tracker, put everything on a drone and throw the results into gyroflow to get buttery smooth footage.
Agreed! But it speak volumes that the computational power of iPhones for example is so strong that the quality of the cinematic mode is so good. I think the real question is is the stabilisation tech at the lower end of the market worth it? Yes it is. 😊
Great videos! Olympus and Panasonic have much better IBIS implementations than Sony, so it actually can be very useful
The format of this show is so goooood.
Simply the BEST 👉🏻 I use a “Panasonic GH5 II with a LUMIX 12-35mm mark II Pro lens” using Dual stabilisation (try it you will like it 👍🏻)
Your production value is on par with the Verge or MKBHD, how does this only have 21k views!? 😮 Great video!
Another great video team! Well done! Keep em coming! ❤️🤘
Cheers Paraig!
Great analysis and video! wondering if you could add a comparison to the sony post-stabilization in software using recorded gyro data.
I use to use a mobile gimbal by evo, but when I upgraded my phone it came with built in sensor stabilisation (not just digital frame only) that seemed to fight against the stabilisation of the gimbal, id get these weird vibrations in the footage during certain gimbal moves making most clips unusable. Did you experience anything like that in your tests? I'm not sure if it's an issue of modern phones not really needing a gimbal, the image stabilisation getting into unexpected situations (fighting the gimbal), or of the old gimbal not moving fast enough for the modern phones own stabilisation. Etc
Great vid guys! 👌
Probably good to mention the longer the focal length or narrower AOV the more susceptible a camera will be to image shake. This is main reason the goPro looks better it’s basically the widest angle possible.
interesting topic fellas! learnt a lot there.
Excellent information, thank you!
Have you tried the Feiyutech Scorp Pro, would like to know your thoughts on this new stabilizer please.
I notice there was no mention of DJI products, any reason? 🤔
Thanks! This was really helpful!
Thanks Dan! Glad you found it useful 😄
Very well put together video 9.7/10
I had a JVC camcorder from 2001 that had digital image stabilization. Sadly, it's now dead, but how the heck did that work? Surely JVC couldn't have been doing real-time motion detection (based on AI image processing) and warp stabilization in 2001.
dude this video rules! your channel is amazing. ❤ thankyou
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it :D
I really love the " Film science " episodes please keep making more and cover more areas and elements, you guys are making videos and explaining these concepts in very efficient way so everybody could understand I had never come across these types of informative and interesting videos about filmmaking across the internet so please making more and ( I'm gonna leave this comment in every episode of " film science " so you guys see it .
and yesss this is fucking interesting . 🙃
Really enjoyed this deep dive. However, I had to watch it in 0.75x speed bc the narrator just talks a bit too fast. Not sure if it's just me, but a lot of information being pressed into 6 and a half minutes was kind of a heavy load to process it all. Just some small constructive criticism for next time.
Production was top tier tho, came here from Instagram and wasn't disappointed. Gonna have to start playing around w the setting on my Alpha 7C 😎 📷
Is it an ad for go pro?
You guys should try the action mode on the 14 pro instead of the 13 pro
Gimbals are expensive and heavy to bring on a daily use. How about the new gimbal cameras such like DJI Pocket series, what do you think about it? I'm using Osmo Pocket for 2 years and I love how it looks, it delivers cinematic views without using a digital stabilization.
What about reelsteadygo or gyroflow?
But the Sonys do have gyro data, that you can use to stabilize with their catalyst software 🤔
Nice video! What about glidecams?
Got here from an IG ad lol
I love the ronin 4D and in some way it is a sensor ouside the body on a gimal and the z axis imo it is the best stabilisation right now
You mention action sports and cinematic masterpiece, but where does nature walks fall on that spectrum?
Me: uses a drone so I don’t need to worry about stabilisation
So so underrated omg
Thanks Flubbz!
And what about SteadXP tech?
wow i don't know just reading wikipedia in front of camera can do a video.
What about mechanical stabilization? Steadicam etc?
I was thinking this as well! But I think this video is aimed more for “budget” filmmakers
👍🏾🙏🏾
Need better tracking footage.... rollerblades. Yes. Rollerblading is a great way to make smooth video tracking.
So I watched for 6 and a half minutes for a conclusion of 'use the appropriate tool.' There was no scientific comparison for the viewer (me) to make my own judgement. If that is your final summary, sorry that's a complete cop out.
I was expecting more side by side comparison…seems like you had all the gear, why make the video?
Can anyone tell me what ‘stabLilization’ is?
Come on guys, can’t even check the spelling on the only few words you use in this movie? StabLilization???!?
bro u reveled the answer in the first minute of the bedio ..not that we know that gopro is the best but revelng the asnwers too quick will make viewers stop wacthing wen they get the answer ..so u should have told it at the last . myself stopped watchinf after 1min mark..
Nah, just makes me more curious *why* the gopro is better and what the limitations are, IMO
