Long before the fires of hell were reunited in celebration for the latest Doom game released under Bethesda, Doom 3 taught the world the importance of flashlights. After that game brought the franchise back into vogue in the early 2000s, the Doom movie would be released to capitalize on that. Awesome! Except that somewhere along the way, everyone involved just forgot that Doom is about Hell and demons in a very literal sense...

I will say that the behind the scenes stuff was actually really interesting on the DVD version. Especially with Dwayne complimenting how hard the actual marines work that they trained with to make the rrts seem believable as a unit and being shown that yes, blanks are still fucking deadly by blowing apart a mannequin head from a foot away with them.

The problem with this film is,it's not a Doom movie but a generic soldiers are trapped in a science station with monsters/Aliens rip off-film.The only good things are:1). the POV-Sequence,which is pretty cool visually and 2).the final brawl between The Rock & Eomer.

True, but I just wish someone would make a proper video game movie adaptation. Something that does the source material justice. Hell, I'd love to watch a movie about the Starcraft series, done with the same style and quality as the cinematics in Starcraft 2.

I was excited bout this movie when it came out, but super disapointed in it, effects n all are fine but the story is what i hated about it. Doom had a fine enough story to begin with, portal tech leads to hell dimension n unleashes demons on mars. Its not like a similar concept hasnt been done, e.g. "Event Horizon" and that was a decent movie.
I understand sometimes things have to be changed for better adaptation, but this is Doom.......nobody was expecting a highly engaging story from it, so keeping true to the source material wouldve not only worked for this movie but actually been damn near perfect for it. BFG was useles, no plasma guns, dont think it even had a rocket launcher, not alot of monster variety. IMO barely a 2/5 which Id give instead of 1/5 just cause im a fan of Dwayne Johnson

Interesting trivia to note about the Doom movie's development Hell.
Between 1997 and 1999 it was in development at Tristar, with an estimated budget of 100 million dollars. Vincent J Guastini was on board to design some of the creatures, even did some clay models and sketches of demon designs, including a spider demon and pinky, and some concept art for a Baron of Hell and Cyberdemon.
The plot moved from the Phobos storyline to a story set on Earth with monsters ( "Aliens" or "Demons" we're not entirely sure what the plan was there.) coming up to the surface from somewhere underground. They were going for an independence Day vibe and the film would have been PG-13. Then, in 1999, Columbine happened and the entire thing folded.
The 2005 Doom film was never going to have Hell in it. Not because anyone involved in the production had an issue with that, but because they simply weren't convinced they would have the financial resources to design the Hellscapes needed. David Callahan never wrote Hell sequences. In fact, if you pay attention, the entire movie is filmed on basically five sets. The ARK chamber is reused three times to represent two locations, the corridors, hallways, med-labs, machine shops are all basically the same rooms reused for Both Earth and Mars locations.
Doom the movie has a lot of potential, but this film just fails on all fronts. The only redeeming parts are The Rock, Karl Urban, and the soundtrack by Clint Mansell. The action is lame, the cinematography is awful, the screenplay is so cliche ridden that it's entirely too predictable with no surprises, and the editing is so stop-start that it makes the whole thing very dull.

the only 2 things that I even liked from the DOOM movie are what the acronym BFG9000 stands for and the Pinky Demon being more threatening because instead of robotic legs (like in DOOM 3) it has wheelchair legs, meaning it's not restricted in movement as it can still tear people's arses apart rapidly and not even a knife through its top jaw could stop it, I found that amazingly awesome, the DOOM movie promised 40% of the movie to be in first person view but we only got 2 minutes of first person view, 2 extra minutes in the extended edition giving a total 4 minutes of first person view, it played great that one scene along with the Pinky Demon in that scene, and the music was awesome, but I wish it was more like the game DOOM or even DOOM 2016 remake instead of being like the prequel DOOM 3

A friend of mine commented "It would be stupid if the movie was just a 1st person tracking shot." And in 2005, they did exactly that.

I'm glad that Decker gave this movie a straight average rating. Because even though it's almost completely detached from the video games, It's actually not that bad a ride. It makes me wonder if there was actually a problem with the production that prevented it from straight-up using Demons from Hell, and depicting them as being vulnerable to the firearms of mere mortals.
I have a feeling that the Christians who run the MPAA wouldn't take kindly to that.
Especially considering that the movie already has a somewhat derogatory attitude towards Christianity, or religion in general in the form of Goat; a man who wears his piety on his sleeve, but it's clearly only cuts skin deep. As despite the fact that he's the only religious man in the group, he was still evil enough beneath the surface to change into a monster...and then kill himself.
But Decker...you're saying that the Bible has problems with "self-mutilation?" ...The same book where the SAME God commands his followers to cut the skin off the end of their dicks, has a problem with self-mutilation? I guess we'll just add that to the list of contradictions...
...Also, Decker's advice in playing Doom will get you killed. Everyone with a brain should know you only go for the Soul Spheres after you hit 100% health, that way you can get Maximum! (And you never touch Security Armor if your Mega Armor drops below 100% - keep the damage reduction of Mega until its whittled down to single digits - THEN pick up Security.)

I can't remember where I heard this but I thought that the reason why they decided to remove Hell from the film was to make it an easier sell to the studio so they would get a higher budget and to avoid controversy. Given the box office success of Resident Evil, they felt that a move away from the Hell origin and moving it into the safe zombie virus angle would lead to a wider audience.

I like your idea that tha team was an amalgamation of Doomguy's personalities that everyone identified in their experiences so all of them dying just before Reaper becomes the more literal physical embodiment of Doomguy reminds me of THE ONE wherein all the others are killed off so their energy transfers to the remainder making him God Mode...with the exception of tha Sarge who doesn't die before then which is rightly so because if you remember - Tha Sarge ends up being a boss fight in DooM 3 in league with the main villain or antagonist Dr. Malcolm Betruger who was sorta replaced by Dr Carmack who is a name drop of someone outside tha game and I could be here all day if I listed every single name tha game could have dropped of a character inside tha game it's most "loosely" based on in the direction it ultimately took|
