I'm just playing a combat sim game called DCS world so I'm learning how to play a video game that happens to be a simulator. I got nervous when those migs were 35 miles out and turned BACK in to intercept, that's so close. In the game I am expecting the enemy to fire a decoy missile at me from those distances to force me to maneuver then fire a second one to finish me while I'm dealing with the first. They got within 10 miles before firing. They'd merge in about a minute or two. I think they held their own well in a dangerous situation where they could have seriously been killed. I remember the US air raid into Tripoli: Operation El Dorado Canyon. We flew in on a SAR mission to extract the pilots of the FB-111 that was shot down...by the time we got there, the Libyans were there; the pilots were dead. We have one helluva a firefight, and recovered one body. It was a sad day.

The F-14 can not be brought back with mods because the only F-14's left are static displays and the last I heard was 3 or 4 at Davis-Motham AFB, all others were shredded to keep parts getting to Iran on the black market
The F14 was a beautiful looking craft. It did have severe engine problems that caused more than one crew death. The gun and the advance in reliability of the air to air missiles (radar, infra red and short or longer range) helped
Thi documentary is a broad-stroke look at the F-14, with generous attention being paid to other Naval aviation platforms against the backdrop of the Vietnam war. A far more interesting documentary would be one that focuses on the role of the F-14 vs that of its replacement bythe F-18 Super-Hornet. The F-14 is considered by many to be the superior aircraft, however, it was the maintenance and procurment costs of the F-14 which decided its fate in favor of the F-18.
@Ionor Rea's Tech Evolution Archive You would be very surprised, but F-14 CAN WIN dogfight against both MiG-29/Su-27. T/W of F-14B/D is at 0.88 at full power a full fuel load (Normal takeoff weight= empty weight+full fuel= 27,7t). Su-27 T/W with full fuel is 0.91. But the wonder lies in better aerodynamics- F-14 has much less draggy profile, archiving lift/drag ratio of around 15. This number is 10 for MiG-29 and 11 for Su-27. This mean while initial acceleration of Tomcat is slower it can maintain it for longer time than draggy Sukhois and MiGs. The same to turning- F-14B has corner speed around 390-400kts, much higher than sub-200kts of MiG-29. Its sustained turning capability is on pair with Su-27 at around 17deg/s at 10000ft/3000m . HMS is nothing new, in fact they got tested in 70's on Tomcats too but wasn't widespread. The helmet was called HMD or DASH. And indeed Tomcat has far superior radar/missile to any 80's Russian fighter (MiG-31 got PESA but R-33 it carried in 80's has inferior range, speed and is semi-active only until 2000s when it got terminal active guidance) www.hq.nasa.gov/pao/History/SP-468/ch11-6.htm www.f-16.net/forum/download/file.php?id=24629&t=1&sid=dd18fdf06ad7249f00b0b69a303cf7ea i.imgur.com/VKK60YS.png i.imgur.com/PNYr9tG.jpg
@Ionor Rea's Tech Evolution Archive You are such an expert :) 400kts is around 740kph, nowhere close to supersonic range. It is in fact the range where most jet dogfights occurs- trans-sonic range. Instantaneous turn is a double edge sword- you can get your opponent into launch zone faster but as soon as you try to do it you would loose energy and thereby speed. If the missile couldn't do its job or you were under safe launch distance then you are doomed- your opponent would out-accelerate and out turn you with ease. Acceleration and turn ability of Western jets are usually better on alt of 3000m/10000ft and higher. As my graphs point out, at 3000m F-14 would have about the same turn radius as Su-27 which is astonishing for a large interceptor. Combined with better BVR capability 80's F-14B is clearly superior to any 80's Russian jet in most aspects, assuming its pilot can keep its corner speed at 400kts, go vetical whenever needed and not let himself to be lured into low speed turn fight.
Anyway US fired just 3 Phoenix missiles in combat which can hardly be used as a preference. In contrast to it Iranian fired quite a few of them and scored up to 80 hits, 3 of them were confirmed as MiG-25. One Phoenix hit went into history as it destroyed 3 planes at once and damaged one more. That's more appropriate.
I agree. The F-14D's were no joke and the F-15E Eagle Jockies of the Air Force would not challenge them do to the D model engines making them faster than F-15's
as a pure ground strike plane i have to agree with you in regards to the a-10 but in terms of air superiority that goes to the f-14(and later on down the road to the f-15,f-16,and f-18s)
A question for anyone who really knows: What determines the shape and size of the engine air intakes? I've seen them at (approx,) 45* 90* and 120*. Round, oval, ovoid, rectangular, etc.
That really depends on the engine size if the aircraft is supersonic or subsonic and if the designer of the aircraft wants the Inlet to be part of the fuselage as seen on aircraft like the a-7,f16,and mirage 3 or if the designer wants the Inlets located on the nacelles as seen on the f15,f14
*SIMPLY THE BEST OF THE BEST AND 'WE THE PEOPLE' ARE GRATEFUL FOR THESE FIGHTER PILOTS AND THEIR COURAGE AND SKILLS TO KEEP THE SKYS FREE FROM THIS EVIL DICTATOR IN LIBYA OR OTHERS AROUND THE GLOBE!!!*

The F-8U served asll the way through the Vietnam war. It was invaluable on the smaller post WWII carriers. Retired in 1975. Although recon versions served for many years later. The last official flight was either 1999 or 2000.
The US Naval Reserve flew the RF-8G till 1987, the French Navy flew the F-8 till 1999-2000. Good airframe, but accident prone around the carrier. The Navy had the aircraft rebuilt and upgraded several times throughout the late 60s. Could carry a lot of gas internally and one of the few dogfighters in an era of high speed and high altitude interceptors.
the first tomcat in the libyan fight is "fast eagle 102".it made the first kill in air combat.it is now based in midland,tx CAF museum my home town.for 30 years it sat in a corner of the museum collecting dust till it was realized the this f14 is the real deal and the history it has.it is now fully restored for display but not operational.
Why would we do that when the Hornet and Super Hornet is a MUCH more capable and superior aircraft? All we would be doing is wasting money! There is no need for the F-14 once the F-18 came out.
It was the F-14D you are talking about, a Super Tomcat. Capable for all that F/A-18 was and more, being superior in everything than cost (F-14 was expensive aircraft to maintain).
will B The electronic ware fare of an f18 is much better than a f14. The US takes it’s military very seriously there’s no way the f18 would have replaced it if it wasn’t a superior machine.
F14 saved million of Iranians people in imposed war with iraq for 8 year .....10 of F14tomcat killed more than 270 iraqy mig ,,thats a unique record in aviation
I remember during the war between Iran and Iraq, so many of those Migs, SUs, and European jet fighters destroyed by F14s and made a nightmare for Saddam.
The biggest baddest aircraft I ever saw... This plane looked like it belonged in a Star Wars movie, taking on Imperial Tie Fighters! It made any Soviet MiG look like a toy! Yes there are more advanced aircraft today that are more maneuverable, faster and stealthier... but none of them look as cool or menacing as this bad boy did. We'll never see another aircraft in the world like this again.
F 14 took more abuse as a navy aircraft - carrier landings are brutal. The maintenance on the F 14 had become extremely expensive - reported as 24 man hours of maintenance per hour flown vs. 6 hours for the F 18. The Navy wanted a bird that could war fight without being slowed by the maintenance requirements.
@@joephysics5469 Although true in terms of maintenance requirements, much of which was for the avionics systems...same that is used on F15, F & F/A18, etc..... a budget had been approved to extend the life of the aircraft for 15 years (at a cost of about $15m per plane (about 10% the cost of new) and NA/Grummun already had design work strongly initiated for a new gen F14 when congress enacted the Sequestration Budget cuts......the USN was told....here is the cuts...you figure out what program you want to cut.....USN command chose to end the f14 program...…. the only aircraft designed specifically to protect the USN fleet and 2ndly, the only aircraft that could reach the comm. targets (other than our bombers) during Iraq (without refueling).
The US Navy did not want the Iranians to get the spare parts for the F-14s they bought from US 40 years ago. Also, they wanted the more modernized F-18E Super Hornets to feature a more prominent role. That is why they scrapped the F-14.
@@richardthantzin1229 It was mostly scrapped because of the military industrial complex of bush/cheney years. Lockheed martin got the f-35 on carries now and its much more expensive than the f-14 and less capable.
i know this isnt much consolation but at least we are reviving the phantom program maybe there is hope we can get a revival of the tomcat program in a few years down the road
The F-14 was the sexiest fighter to ever fly the skies. The F-15 however, is my favorite of all fighters... The F-15 has a sexyness all of its own. It looks sexy and yet lethal at the same time.
You would think sex if you had a Phoenix closing in at Mach 5 and the F-14 is the only plane configured for that even though the F-111 had the radar to control Phoenix. We have heard that the F-14 were ground into pavement because the Iranians are desperate for parts -- some of which are date sensitive.
LTJG Mike Blue! He's also in Top Gun, flying an F-5 as a MiG simulator, which tells me he won the the Top Gun Trophy #VF84 #AnytimeBaby #JollyRogers #getBONED
Stevie Jo In its day, the Tomcat was INDEED "THE" MOST BAD ASS STAND OFF LONG RANGE WEAPONS PLATFORM!!! ALSO, REMARKABLY; IN THE TURNING OR VERTICAL DOGFIGHTS!!! NO OTHER airframe can boast or say that with ABSOLUTE checked facts to confirm that statement! When America gets it right... they are FANTASTIC IN THIER PURSUITS! This was one of those times.
Because I'm male and was born in the 70's, I grew up in the age of these large, powerful and dominant US aircraft so I love the sharks teeth on the Tomcats..... it looks proper cool. And..... how suicidal was it for those Libyan dinosaur aircraft SU-22 pilots to attack those F-14's? Talk about bringing a lolly stick to a Phoenix fight! The Mig 23 pair, however, were decent aircraft, pretty decent pilots but not decent enough to beat the F-14's.
Roger Lee Smith What kind of war were we fighting; where we COULDN'T ATTACK OR BOMB NRTH. VIETNAMESE AIRFIELDS?!!!! BUT; THEY COULD DESTROY OURS AT WILL, and tried on many occasions with heavy motors and rockets and whatever else they chose to try. How did we ever think we'd win, with NO PASS THE 50 YARD LINE EVER... rules we had to abide by?!!!!! UNFREAKIN-BELIEVABLE FOLKS.
Agreed. F14s could fire 6 Phoenix missiles at six different targets while tracking 18 other targets beyond visual range. Phoenix missiles easily exceed MACH 5 and 100,000 feet altitude. Could engage cruise missiles and even if the F14 was shot down prior to the missile hitting it's target, the missile would activate it's on board radar for the rest of the flight (terminal guidance) to the target. And no other plane could get to the target area with as much ordinance as a Tomcat. F-18s are no slouch, but the Tomcat would own it in combat. The only other plane at the time in our arsenal that could even compete was the F15 Eagle with it's advance radar and other guidance systems. Another thing, the F14 used to pass it's targets down to Army Air Defense units to engage while it engaged the first 6 with phoenix missiles. Then it would deal with the left overs with it's sparrows or Aim 9's and 20mm........ No other plane in our history can do that. Not even today. I loved working with Tomcat Pilots......
The Atoll was almost an exact copy of the Sidewinder? There was an AIM-9B stolen from an air base in Turkey. They made their own modifications from there on, but it was essentially the same weapon.
Even in the age of stealth, the mere sight of the Tomcat is so overwhelming

I remember the US air raid into Tripoli: Operation El Dorado Canyon. We flew in on a SAR mission to extract the pilots of the FB-111 that was shot down...by the time we got there, the Libyans were there; the pilots were dead. We have one helluva a firefight, and recovered one body. It was a sad day.
sorry
Thanks to France for not allowing our U.K. based aircraft to fly through their airspace. Added about four hours each way for that mission.

F14 is one of the best jet fighter
I'm glad we have our fleet of F-14's sandbagged and ready to be brought back into service in just a matter of weeks. Very awesome fighter !
tom mcdavid search F-14 scrapped. We only have 165 of 633.
Cold War was the best! Harpoon 2 AE fanatic here. It is still the best and most professional military navy simulation available for public.
until now the U.S never acknowledged how many F4 they lost there
We don’t need guns anymore ( famous last words)....
what's great about this piece is that it can be brought back to the game with some mods.
Correction: 1. The A-4 Skyhawk operated at low level, but was NOT slow. 2. The Skyraider performed vital missions, and was, therefore, NOT obsolete.
Very few things are as exciting as combat.
257 MiGs disliked this awesome video. F14 I love you Sexy Tomcat!!!
That is a very generous description!!! THIS DOCUMENTARY SUCKED ASS!!~
God, I'm getting old ... this plane is now obsolete.
Cougar and Merlin, and Maverick and Goose.
(Sigh) Great... Maverick and Goose.
Yes, F-14 A/B/D on record (and video) getting gun kills on MIG-21, MIG-23, MIG-25, MIG-29 in mock exercises.
The libian and iraquian MiGs that were killed by this would not agree with your statement.
And indeed Tomcat has far superior radar/missile to any 80's Russian fighter (MiG-31 got PESA but R-33 it carried in 80's has inferior range, speed and is semi-active only until 2000s when it got terminal active guidance)

@Ionor Rea's Tech Evolution Archive You have assumption, I have hard data. Try harder :)
F15 eagle is my all time favorites until today
Man, I love the Jolly Roger on those vert-stabs. USN should bring that back for that squadron if they already haven't.
VFA-103 are the Jolly Rogers. They previously flew the F-14B and now fly the F-18 Super Hornet 😉
I agree. The F-14D's were no joke and the F-15E Eagle Jockies of the Air Force would not challenge them do to the D model engines making them faster than F-15's

The legendary US Navy fighter jet F-14 Tomcat. This fighter jet has already taken its place in US Navy history.
it is/was badass, but my favorite is still the A10 Warthog ,that's a badass aircraft !
as a pure ground strike plane i have to agree with you in regards to the a-10 but in terms of air superiority that goes to the f-14(and later on down the road to the f-15,f-16,and f-18s)
it has fuzzie at the end like a tape. beautiful ! lol
Bring back F14 for US Navy aircraft carriers and F35b for Marines! Now we needed it!
Best Design Fighter Plane. It change into RoboTech

Nice! I still have it on DVD. One of the first DVD’s I ever owned. It was part of a series.

So glad I grew up in this decade....There was money,Good leadership,Respect for the flag, Respect for our OWN people, but above all,the BEST protection money and honor could produce!!!! MAGA2020!!!! KEEP IT ROLLING!!!!
The F-8U served asll the way through the Vietnam war. It was invaluable on the smaller post WWII carriers. Retired in 1975. Although recon versions served for many years later. The last official flight was either 1999 or 2000.
Loved the Crusader
The US Naval Reserve flew the RF-8G till 1987, the French Navy flew the F-8 till 1999-2000. Good airframe, but accident prone around the carrier. The Navy had the aircraft rebuilt and upgraded several times throughout the late 60s. Could carry a lot of gas internally and one of the few dogfighters in an era of high speed and high altitude interceptors.
the first tomcat in the libyan fight is "fast eagle 102".it made the first kill in air combat.it is now based in midland,tx CAF museum my home town.for 30 years it sat in a corner of the museum collecting dust till it was realized the this f14 is the real deal and the history it has.it is now fully restored for display but not operational.
the f14 should have been taken and redesigned and upgraded with the new tech
Why would we do that when the Hornet and Super Hornet is a MUCH more capable and superior aircraft? All we would be doing is wasting money! There is no need for the F-14 once the F-18 came out.
It was the F-14D you are talking about, a Super Tomcat. Capable for all that F/A-18 was and more, being superior in everything than cost (F-14 was expensive aircraft to maintain).
The F14 was replaced by the Hornet, not the super hornet.
MississippiRebel
how is it superior in every way?
will B The electronic ware fare of an f18 is much better than a f14. The US takes it’s military very seriously there’s no way the f18 would have replaced it if it wasn’t a superior machine.
A Tomcat crashed 2 miles from my house when I was a child. Near Willow Grove air base.
2002 ?
LOL, the Phoenix weapons system was rolled with the Blackbird family, but the Blackbirds where to fast for the missiles....
The Phoenix flew at mach 5+.....the blackbirds flew at 3.4 was the fastest...IIRR...that was in the YF12 with the AIM 47 (Falcon)
Tomcat following bear with wings fully extended
F14 saved million of Iranians people in imposed war with iraq for 8 year .....10 of F14tomcat killed more than 270 iraqy mig ,,thats a unique record in aviation
Well that's pretty good, I'm glad somebody got to kill alot of MiGs with the F14..like a lot of MiGs
I remember during the war between Iran and Iraq, so many of those Migs, SUs, and European jet fighters destroyed by F14s and made a nightmare for Saddam.
The Persians used it very well against Iraqi fighters during the Iran-Iraq War.It was a remarkable weapon to have!
These pilots get hysterical in the middle of combat.
The f 14, one of the best piece of machinery ever built, the f 18 (probably more eficient) look like a Japanese car next to a Rolls.
We'll never see another aircraft in the world like this again.
whatever you do you lose the war and you lose the war.
My favourite jet fighter.... After the English electric lightning...
Helluva pick in the Lightning, best British jet fighter for sure!
the same program to keep the F15 in service for another decade should have applied to the Tomcat
5:15 - - - a sign on the fuselage under the wing.... looks interesting
Those four triangles indicate latch points or electrical grounds or maybe data links for the AIM-54s. Sorry I don't remember which.
The Legend...
It's kinda obsolete but I think with the fighter engine upgrade the F14 was top of the heap
Gotta love 80s intro graphics.
28:00 - CLONES ON THE PHONES!
LMAO, to funny..... LSO's
It’s like the top gun intro thing where the literal same thing happens
The F-14 is a sexy beast!
That's like camping, it's fucking in tents!
As cool as the F14 was, it first flew 50 years ago. Past time for an upgrade.
As far as the last comment goes, oh we really do know why these men fly. Who wouldn’t want that job !
Had this on VHS
Because I'm male and was born in the 70's, I grew up in the age of these large, powerful and dominant US aircraft so I love the sharks teeth on the Tomcats..... it looks proper cool.
And..... how suicidal was it for those Libyan dinosaur aircraft SU-22 pilots to attack those F-14's? Talk about bringing a lolly stick to a Phoenix fight! The Mig 23 pair, however, were decent aircraft, pretty decent pilots but not decent enough to beat the F-14's.
I came to see my favorite jet the Tomcat, not the A-4, although a great jet, still not the angel of the sky.
@@samuelparker9882 Are you suggesting Roger Smith is responsible in some way?
yes,i see a top gun mouvie! destroid menu migs, and tom cruise is a best pilot
F-14 left a hole that has yet to be filled when it was retired.
F-18 with the AIM-120D kind of filled that role and fills other roles.
I agree that role and hole sound the same
yoyoyoyoshua F-18 still can’t go as fast as a tomcat nor is it as manoeuvrable.
royalmarine97 and it doesn't have the range and ordinance capacity either.
Random question that I always wanted to know is to why they pushed aircraft overboard into the sea?
By far my favorite. Even on the ground it looks like it wants to kill you!!
The Atoll was almost an exact copy of the Sidewinder? There was an AIM-9B stolen from an air base in Turkey. They made their own modifications from there on, but it was essentially the same weapon.
yep the k-13 also known as the r-3s aam was reversed engineered from like you already mention a aim-9b that had been stolen
Tom cat..great design..
