My favorite thing is that “Draft Day” is all about the Browns overcoming the pressure to draft a massively hyped quarterback who has serious character concerns, and then only weeks after this movie came out the real life Browns literally drafted that player in Johnny Manziel
In the movie, they traded up for the smart but unpopular pick in Mack ahead of the popular quarterback with character red flags, and it paid off. In real life, they traded up for the popular quarterback with character red flags instead of perhaps staying at #4 and making the smart but perhaps unpopular pick…also in Mack.
And then Mike Mayock said, “This is just like the movie Draft Day”. It was a perfect Browns-ing.
My favorite part of that whole thing is that they had that pricey pricey study to determine who the best quarterback was in that first round range and their report came back with Teddy Bridgewater, and they just totally ignored it
The Browns saw how the movie bombed at the box office and said "We're not making that mistake! Let's draft a cowboy! Wooooo!"
@@AdamKlownzinger even if we would have taken him, it doesn’t really change the trajectory of our history…. It’s not like they passed on mahomes for Manziel
It's funny how it was the jags and brown making the dumb choices like in real life 😂
I love how offended Tom is by the draft boards
“They’re tiny!” lol
How much bigger do the boards have to be?
@@garse70 Huge, think about it. There are possibly thousands of players they scouted for each round/position. If a team wants a.. say a RB, they would have their list of options but also planning out for which rounds as well. They would maybe have a few for each round or alternate plans and etc. They legit would have walls of players' names.
If you search for, “get an inside look at the NFL draft war rooms”, there’s a dozen+ photos of various teams’ war rooms w/boards in the background, circa 2014. Covers half the wall typically. Different boards w/different info on them.
Aside: I wonder how long that info is sensitive? I’d rather my competition didn’t know what we felt was critical last couple years.
Fantasy draft boards are bigger LOL
This is probably the best video the social media team has put out
Facts!! The way that they got Telesco to do a play by play of what really goes on is priceless content. BOLT UP!!
It’s all about teamwork. ⚡️⚡️⚡️BOLTZ⚡️⚡️⚡️
I agree! I can’t get enough of this stuff!
This didn't age well
lol they even liked your comment because they knew that were about to drop something amazing
I swear… Draft Day is the story of the second worst GM in the league getting lucky and saving his career by fleecing the actual worst GM in the league.
Not to mention the subplot of how he's having a baby with his co-worker who's 30 years his junior.
You’re ignoring the Jacksonville GM who didn’t know who the hell he was taking at pick 6, and then traded it away for some 2nd round picks
@@mckerob It’s truly a three way race to the bottom.
Where does my old gm Ryan Pace rank? The one who traded the 3rd pick for the 2nd pick to pick Mitch Trubisky
@@mckerob That's the worst GM in the league. The Seahawks guy does... okay, basically trading Putney to save salary on Callahan.
Never have I seen Tom open up like this in all his years as the Chargers GM. Bravo to the person that I came up with this! This is GOLD!!
Tom's appearances on Pat McAfee show are great. He'll be on for an interview during the draft for Pats show tomorrow
Watch all the times he goes on the Pat McAfee show, he’s really candid on the show. Not like when in a press conferenxe
Yes he definitely feels a lot more confident
Still suck
Lol this guy is mr personality.
We need more casual talks with Tom! I could listen to him muse about picks, prospects, and strategy all day.
The “$100 test” in this movie was inspired by the Oakland Raiders testing Jamarcus Russel’s dedication to an NFL career by giving him blank video tapes and telling him to study the film at home. Jamarcus returned them some time later and said he had studied the film.
And they still took him? What was the point?
This happened after they drafted him
@@jefecito5108that was after they drafted him an nfl team would not give a yet to be drafted player film and tell them to study it
@@Novattk or the team's playbook like they do in this movie
Eagles fan here. I was expecting to see this on Vanity Fair. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I saw this was from the Chargers. Well done, Chargers social media team, well done (tips hat)
same!
Secretly love this movie
"The salary cap part of it really works itself out" spoken like a true GM
Chargers heading into this offseason over the cap by something like $54million.
@@ericparker163 good thing all the money was well spent /s
@@DaSauceful Based on results?
@@ericparker163 the /s denotes sarcasm
@@DaSauceful ...and now I know. Appreciated. Took it for a typo of j/s
chargers have the best social media crew no matter the platform
I like seeing interviews with people you don't normally see interviews with, and realizing they have a personality. I remember as a teen watching Tom Brokaw on Letterman and being amazed that somebody you think of as such a serious person actually has a sense of humor. Same with Brian Williams and Fallon. And Ichiro telling the sock joke with Costas. All good stuff. We lose sight of the fact that these are just people, but people who happen to have a cool job.
7:00 Tom's reaction to the birthday party just made my day 🤣
I knew it!! That thing has been memed to death but it's actually legit!
I guess it's like that bit in Moneyball where the scouts think a player sucks because his girlfriend's ugly. A lot of baseball fans I've known not only believe that to be real thing but think the scouts had a real point.
Idk why but this is one of those movies I love lol
Not a chargers fan but love this video
Social media team is killin it! Good shit y’all
“That’s so bizarre” I CACKLED
THIS CONTENT IS AMAZING. Never would have thought an NFL team would get their GM to react and share like this 🔥🔥
So cool to see insights like this into how players are scouted, how teams negotiate trades, stuff like that is the most interesting part of football!
Chargers social media team going MVP mode
This getting suggested to me today is fantastic
I watched the Lions 2023 draft on that INSIDE THE DEN show they self-produce. On the draft ep, you see the GM in the draft room, alongside the coach AND the team owner, checking in with the coach on his pics for each round... letting the owner know what each player will bring to the table. VERY different from what you see in DRAFT DAY. 😄
9:24 this is cool. Going through the same thing with a college hockey team. Started at the bottom of the ladder taking the jobs no one wanted to do, proving my worth to the team. Been with the team for 3 years now. I was recently promoted to Hockey Operations Manager and part of the scout team.
Well done. I love the NFL but the MLB and NHL are my favorite of the major sports. Really any baseball and hockey though I enjoy.
Like now with the playoffs and IHF going on at the same time as baseball it’s the best time of year. Unfortunately my Ducks are too relevant these days but for you it must be just awesome to be working your way through the sport.
Very cool. 🤙🏻
@@OCRay1 Thank you.
When you first walk into the rink, they have photos of the coaches and management, I can't help but smile ear to ear when I look at my photo. I never thought this would be my life growing up, but I can't think of anything else I would rather be doing.
Which team?
Chargers social media team remains undefeated
This was awesome
That was cool
This video definitely didn't disappoint
Not gonna lie. I'm not even close to a Chargers fan, but this was entertaining.
What a cool guy
In telesco we trust!
You mean in Ballard we trust ;)
This video was REALLY top quality content. Great job to all you folks in the social media team!
Who is here as a raiders fan .. now that Tom Telesco is our GM! 😅

Holy crap they pulled one out of gq’s breakdown series! I love it!
Love this team and love our social media team! Keep up the awesome work guys :)

This was awesome!!!! More videos like this!!!
Quality content I love that movie getting toms reaction was priceless lol
Between this and the anime opening, you guys at the Chargers are really showing you know whats up
OMG this was so good to watch a day before draft day!!! The Chargers Social Media team knocks it out of the park again!!!
Fucking yes
Thank you so much for this!!
After getting drafted JaMarcus Russell was given a blank DVD, was told there was a bunch of plays on there they wanted him to watch.
Next day they asked which plays he liked the most, he said all of them.
Probably would've traded Russell then and there of that was me, although hindsights always 20/20
@@jjmisiewicz7342 contracts weren't set by pick back then. In fact, Russell is the main reason for the rule change. He negotiated a giant contract that they couldn't just get out of, but they cut ties the moment they could afford to. As far as trading him, who on earth would have taken him? It's unlikely we'll ever see a bigger bust than Russell.
I thought they did this in his second or third year. He held out negotiating his contract for so long he missed the entire training camp and even the first couple weeks of the season so I'm pretty sure this DVD test would've broken some kind of player's union rule if he's not actually signed yet.
The reason they were doing the DVD test was because he wasn't showing nearly the amount of improvement he should've been at that stage and they had a feeling based on his previous behavior that he wasn't studying game film.
This is probably my favorite video of all time now. Thank you
AWESOME video idea. Loved it!
Good content
Tom the goat for this 🐐⚡️
i've seen a bunch of these over at GQ this was the best one so far! Thanks for the great content.
This is absolute gold. Really, really fascinating. Well done, Tom!
Best Media team!!! ⚡️⚡️⚡️🏆🏆🏆

Who else here after telesco got fired. ITS THE HARBAUGH ERA BABY
Absolutely love this episode. I would love to see more episodes with other GMs of all sports.
I'm not a huge football fan but found the movie fascinating.
Thanks for this. This was awesome.
This is amazing. More of this and more of Tom
I just watched draft day movie 🍿 last night. Great timing!!
This movie is overall ridiculous, like he said they know basically everything about every play even if they are out of reach because you never know. When I was a student coach in college we had an nfl caliber player (late round to undrafted level) and we had 24 of the 32 teams have scouts come out and do workouts and measurements 5-7 months before the draft.
In high school my coach was called about Darren colledge (2nd round packer pick) by a bunch of nfl teams, all he could say was a didn’t coach him but he was a monster to coach against.
Then I remember Dallas saying mo clayborne was their 2nd rated player behind Andrew luck, they were picking at 12 and weren’t going to target qb but they did their research just in case.
So I'm a bengals fan but geez the chargers social media team is on fire
Bravo to this chargers media teams, y'all are killing it with great content. Definitely gaining a good fanbase just based on content other than the product on the field.
Don't watch much sports anymore but really enjoyed this video! Thank you
Great content. 👍
RN4L welcome Tom can’t wait to see what you can do for our beloved nation
this was amazing need more content like this
This is so great!
Thank you Tom! Love that film! 🧸👑🎥🎩
Chargers social media team is top in sports
Great video
Wow! I stumbled on this and it was awesome. Never knew the Chargers GM before, but just hearing him speak about his experience as a GM as well as relating that to the movie was very informative. Kudos the the Los Angeles Chargers for putting this out there. I would love to see more casual discussions with Tom on other football related things. Maybe he could take us into the draft day room at the Chargers after the draft or something and talk about what happens.
There is a scene where this GM makes an insane trade back into the 1st rd. That scene before the last one should have been showed lol
What an amazing job the social media Team does! Great content
This was great ⚡⚡⚡
Watching this as a raiders fan to make sure he knows what he’s doing this year 🤣🤣
This is so good guys
This video is AWESOME
Need more of this you cut the video too short very interesting to say the least
I love this ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
This is why you won the webby. Chargers media is awesome 😂
Do more of these. This was great. The pancake line is so great for the movie and how they set it up but I can’t imagine that would ever work to convince any man. Tom, thanks for the GM insights. So cool.
That was a great video
This is such an insanely great video
This was amazing.
I'm not a big NFL fan but I loved this movie and I love hearing an actual GM talk about it and explain the different things that go into it.
It's a good movie but hard to watch as a big NFL fan. So much of it is not accurate like Tom said.
I know they need to change things up for dramatic affect but it's obvious no one involved with this movie knows the least bit about how the draft works.
They would never start looking into a player's background the day of the draft. Even if they had the 15th pick and the player was expected to go #1, they would still have notes on the guy going back at least a year just in case he slips past the first 14 picks and he's still available.
Or they may have done the initial work just to determine if they're even willing to draft a guy..
Teams mark guys as undraftable all the time. Could be medical reason, could be attitude issue or someone who just doesn't fit the style of play for that team.
@@cJames404 as a mom of an NFL coach, loved this movie. Made for folks like me, who are fans but not experts. I lived in Cleveland for 2 years as a teen, graduated from high school there, so always rooted for the Browns, lol. Never thought as that young girl I would be connected to football at all, let alone the NFL= we never know😊.!!
im a raiders fan but this was pretty dope to watch, good insight to know more about scouting and the behind the scenes of the draft
This is a great video.
This was lots of fun but I would have loved to have seen this real GMs reaction to the movies Jax-Cleveland Negotiation at the end of the movie.
The board is the RB & LB that they ended up picking
This is AWESOME!
I love how TT is disgusted by the draft boards 😂😂
Hi
This video was full of heart from start to finish
As a fan of sports movies, and Football, I love that we got some commentary from a GM.
One of my favorite sports movies.
This GM was as dry as sawdust, thank god for the guy asking the questions who totally saved the video.
Like this especially having a real GM very cool
This is absolutely fascinating.
This was so good and a great idea to have Tom Do this. I always thought parts of draft day was cheesy but it is Hollywood not a documentary.
I'm a chiefs fan and watched this. Pretty good honestly. I really can't wait to see every team in the AFC West this year play each other.
This is tremendous
They didn't show Tom the scene when the Seahawks GM made an offer to the Browns GM for the first pick and when the Browns GM called back to accept, the Seahawks GM changed the offer and wanted 3 first round picks back instead. So the scene at the end was a way for the Browns GM to get back at the Seahawks GM.
Really fun video, I remember when I watched this even I was kinda annoyed by the draft boards being small
Can we all agree that David Putney is the perfect name for a special teams player?
