    Always do mantle maintenance upwind outdoors. Some of them do have thorium In them and the others have yttrium. You don't ever want to breathe either of those in, even if you sweep, or vacuum the floor weeks later, the vacuum will blow it into the air, It's small enough to go right through the filter, like ashes.
    Coleman has been making mantle lamps and lanterns since the very early 1900s, Long before even World War 1. They were invented for the general public, and then later adapted to be used for the needs of the military.
    Nice 220F you have there, just got my birthday lantern running today.
    That's a real friend sharing a lantern with somebody in need.

    Thanks. Led lights just don't do the trick in my schoolie camper with a wood stove. Going to try to revive two old lanterns tonight!!

      So true. That's why I love these lanterns. They don't need much to keep them going. As long as parts are available.

    Just going through some of my camping gear getting ready for a trip this spring and need to change out all 4 of my lanterns mantles, so I got a couple 4 packs of mantles and figured I'd watch a video about something I've done many times but always wondered if I did it right. Good to know I've been doing it right, 8 new mantles all burning bright. Now to get them to camping in one piece...I better get another couple packs just to make sure they handle the drive.

    Hi, great video, note you can fill up to the bottom of the inlet, fuel goes into the generator and is converted into a gas. For quick start, vapour is used to start.

    I haven't seen a lantern in the store forever I been looking I may check ebay thanks for sharing Scott. Never looked in camping though what a dingbat I am. I should say I haven't seen the hurricane lanterns is what we called them not sure if that's the real name but most are all led battery ran.

    I have two Coleman lanterns, a 533 single burner stove and an old 426D 3-burner stove and a liquid fuel catalytic tent heater. I found the 533 on a clearance rack at Wal-Mart for $29.95. Scoffed it up even though I wasn't looking for another stove. Wouldn't part with them for all the money in the world. Well, maybe some of it.😁 Sometime around 1990, Coleman quit using thorium in their mantles due to the minor radiation issue. Yttrium has been used since that time. Also, overfilling the fount means less air space to pressurize the fount. That leads to shorter burn times requiring frequent pumping.

      I have one of those tent heaters too. Haven’t used it in years, but they actually work quite well.

    A lot has been said about what oil to use for the pump cup. Coleman recommends using Neats Foot oil and that's what I use. If you want to know the date, look on the bottom of the fount. All Coleman (except very early ones) lanterns have the date on the bottom. The model number is usually on the collar. Cheers from eastern TN

    Awesome! I’ve got a January 1976 Canada made green 335. LOVE it. It’s my first Coleman lantern I’m blown away at how bright it is even just being a single mantle.

    That looks like a model 228f lantern. I just picked up the same one from an antique mall this weekend. I’m looking forward to replacing the mantles and wet it working again.

    Some tech just never gets obsolete. Enjoyed it Scott. Do you have one of those hand cranked radios? I thought my dad had one and I never found it after he passed. Reminds me. I may visit my stepmom's house today and look again. They are very handy when the grid is down for a long time.

      We had one, a first alert or first aid one and it went to hell. We haven't replaced it yet, but those crank ones are good to have around for sure.

    Hi just so your aware you did a few things wrong when replacing those mantles. #1. the ventilator top nut should not be tight cause that will damage the porcelain. #2. when replacing the mantles you need to make sure they are completely on the burner caps properly all the way around evenly . Also make sure that the fold in the mantles are not touching the Generator so as to not over heat it. #3. make sure to nor breath in the smoke from the mantles not good for your health. #4. after the mantles are burned in properly there is a lighting procedure . #5 in that pump it is not a packing or o-ring it is called a pump leather and to lube it neetsfoot oil is recommended. I understand your trying to rush your video but to properly people the correct way it should be done right. Thanks.

  • @stevensmith1911
    @stevensmith1911 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Awesome! I heard you can spray hairspray on the mantles inbetween uses in order to protect them a bit. Is this a poor idea?

    • @WhiskeynSunshineOffGrid
      @WhiskeynSunshineOffGrid  Před 8 měsíci +1

    • @johnwyman6126
      @johnwyman6126 Před 6 měsíci

      It works great for when you put it in storage, or are travelling with it. It burns off right away when you start using it though. I've been using it on my Aladdin's, and on my Colemans for many years.

    I have 3 colmen lantern but the pump won't turn to lock. One of them does pump well but dosen't turn

    • @WhiskeynSunshineOffGrid
      @WhiskeynSunshineOffGrid  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The pumps are easy to change and are available on Amazon or at a hardware store. You will just need to match up the model number of the lantern on the bottom of the tank.
