The comment about people misrepresenting optimism as ignorance IS A HUGE ISSUE I HAVE WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS FANDOM. They call Aang Childish because he is a 12 year old that likes to see the positive in everything and acts like a 12 year old. There is a difference between being childish and being a child. He’s not a dumb kid. He was raised by pacifists so that informs a lot of his decisions and I think he’s super conscious of not letting everything he goes through turn him jaded and bitter. (This is probably largely Gyasto’s influence)

About Gyatso's death scene: If you notice, Gyatso is sitting cross-legged, with no burn marks anywhere on him, with a bunch of dead Firebenders around him. How would he have killed all those Firebenders at once with only airbending?
It's implied he used his airbending to suck all the air out of the room. Killing himself along with all the Firebenders around him. Absolute Badass

He came to piece that this was the end of road for him and decided that if he was going to go out, he was taking all of his would be assassins with him, given the fact the firebenders didn’t recover the bodies of their fallen soldiers after the battle was over, I think it’s also pretty safe to assume that most of the Fire Nations army didn’t live to see the end of this particular battle.

A quick note on the airbender arrow (no spoilers, they never explicitly tell): it is an airbender thing but not for everyone, only the masters. What means Aang is already an airbender master as a kid.

    • @strawcold
      @strawcold Před rokem +62

Yeah. Not everyone catches that other airbender kids didn't have the arrow, only the adults and Aang do. I imagine Aang becoming an expert at around 12 is one of the reasons why the elders decided to tell him he was the Avatar before he turned 16.
And him being a master Airbender does explain why he's so good at bamboozling everyone. Because him being otherwisr would just make the master airbenders much scarier than Gyatso's last stand already made them seem.

The fighting animation is so good because they had the fights choreographed and then acted out by a master martial artist. The animators also all started taking martial arts classes to understand the way the body moves. And each bending style is based on a specific real-world martial art. Waterbending is Tai Chi, Firebending is Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, Airbending is Baguazhang, and Earthbending is Hung Gar.
The arrows mean you are an airbending master. Aang is the youngest to ever master airbending, getting his arrows at 12.

Regarding the past Avatars (these are not spoilers; you know them if you dig deep enough into what they have shown us up till now):
Since the existence of the Avatar is universally accepted and recognised (it's basically a global religious system), there are shrines in various places dedicated to them. We will see some of these shrines later as we will also learn more about the statues and how everything is connected.
Also, the way Aang got after seeing Gyatso's dead body is a semblance of the Avatar State, which he can't fully reach and control yet. It requires mastery of all 4 elements so that the Avatar can maintain the Balance in the world.
Lastly, it's good to remember that Aang felt that the previous Avatar Roku was trying to communicate with him. It plays a role in some later episodes.

I can say with utmost confidence that Avatar is one of, if not the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by Nickelodeon. Not only is the animation, voice acting and music top notch, but the writers did TONS of research into various Asian and Inuit cultures for story ideas. They even had professional martial artists come into the studio and show off their moves so the animators could replicate them for the characters. Every single fight scene is based on something someone actually did in real life.

Here's some clues this episode gave us to explain why Katara is the only waterbender of her tribe, except if some went to the war : if Aang died with his people, the next avatar would have been a waterbender. So, if they assume they succeded, they would have attacked Katara's tribe to get rid of the new avatar. Hence the fire navy ship frozen in ice next to her village. They may have even assume they killed this next avatar to and are looking for the next one, an earthbender. Looks like the Earth Kingdom was able to hold on for a hundred years so it can't be that easy to attack them. And since no avatar was reborn into the fire nation, they know they haven't succeded yet. Or maybe they think the new avatar is in the other water tribe, but we don't know how they're doing. For all we know, they don't have water bender either and their quest will fail when they go there. Would be cool of Katara self learn how to waterbend because the whol fire nation is coming for them. They probably would have known thanks to Admiral Zhao but the fire light up in every temples. Aang is now effectively wanted by the whole world, being as an ennemy or an ally.
Also, I love that Zuko knows how to fight. He was trained and had a good teacher. How to make him look more sympathic ? Create a guy that's even more annoying and disrespectful.

So finally finished watching the most recent episode (which of course, is the 3rd one on here). There are a few things that I would like to say.
The continuation in this show is really good to the point where a viewer's question will most likely be answered in a later episode. An example of this is when you guys were discussing whether the choice of the Avatar was either a cycle or randomly chosen from the nations in episode 2, only for the show to demonstrate that it is a cycle in episode 3. Also, you guys wondered how Zuko got his scar in a previous episode to get the answer that he got it from an Agni Kai, or fire duel, in this episode.
This show also goes into topics that are not really discussed to kids because they are deemed an too mature for them. We are only 3 episodes in and so far, we have seen the topics of war, death, and genocide. There are more topics that this show taps into but that will be left for later episodes.

I think something you'll notice is that Avatar is heavily Asian inspired, from the martial arts and the culture tied to each individual nation. Each nation actually does represent specific areas of Asia. Water tribe is influenced by Inuit and Polynesian culture. Air by Tibetan culture. Earth is straight up just pre-Republic of China, when they shut themselves off from the world, isolated they fell behind in culture and technological advancements, but they still kept an overly arrogant thought that they were on top. Fire nation is just industrialized Japan and was heavily colonizing all of Asia with their technological advancements making their island nation much more powerful than any of the other Asian countries. These aspects are apparent in not just culture and history, but outfits and architecture in each nation in Avatar.

"I wanna strive to be like iroh..." fun fact:
I never understood the idea of rolemodels... like... why would I strive to be like someone else...
I really, honestly was always the only kid always being like "I don#t know!" while others were saying like a famous football player or the president or something...
I was just here like "why? I just wanna be a good person"
Until I watched this show. This is when it really hit me what a rolemodel is.
Ever since (nearly 20 years ago) Iroh has been my rolemodel.
Be kind to everyone, do not get upset at life and try to enjoy what you love.
I mean... I still have a long way to go... but I am so happy to have this great of a role-model. Fake person or not... I love his ideals and his way of life.
Seeing you love him nearly as much as I did/do.. .fills me with great joy!
Also white tea has been my favourite ever since.

I Love seeing your thought process and what you guys are thinking lore wise, and I love that you guys pause the video when you do talk about it that way you don't miss anything AND you get to talk for as long as you need to get your thoughts and ideas across successfully. Maybe its just because that's how me and my friends watch shows together but I'm loving it :) Season 1 is pretty amazing, and they only get better from there! This is going be a fun and emotional Journey and I cant wait to take it with ya'll 😁

I might be a bit late with this, but I'll dump a bit of Agni Kai lore in here anyways, since I haven't seen it yet and it isn't mentioned in the actual series.
Agni Kai means something like 'until the burn'. Traditionally it doesn't end until one of the parties involved is burned by the other. That is why Zhao technically could still win from Zuko after he lost the battle.
The loser of an Agni Kai might on occasion shave parts of or all their hair as a sign of humility, except for the topknot or in Zuko's case ponytail, which is a sign of honour in the fire nation.

The beginning of Book 1, mostly the first 5-8 episodes or so, are considered the worst part of the show. So if you guys are having this much fun now, I can't even imagine what the reactions are gonna be like for the finales of the 3 Books.

There is a very spiritual nature to this show. So I think it's more that each of the statues is spiritually charged. So when he lit up next to them they lit up too. And because that temple lit up all the temples lit up.
