- Hello folks. This is a video of me making a temporary fix of a leaking 6 ton bottle jack that raises my J&S motorcycle lift. I've had the motorcycle lift over 13 years and it is one tremendously well built bike lift ...BUT...the bottle jack had a serious leak. I added more jack oil then did a trial lift. It did continue to leak but a modification to the release valve prevents the oil from slowly leaking and the bottle jack is now working fine. You simply CANNOT beat this J&S motorcycle lift. There are many lifts out there but I've had great success with the lift when working on my bike. Thanks for watching and if you would like, leave a comment. More videos to come. 👍🏽🤠

Thanks so much, Susie. I try to fix anything that I "think" I can fix. Many times I've learned that I should just step back and leave things alone before I mess it up worse than it is (ha) but I surely will give it a try if it will save me money or the inconvenience of waiting for a certified repairman ($$). Plus, there's a bit of personal satisfaction dabbling into the guts of something to see if I can fix it myself. Believe me, it's backfired on me many a time 🤣. I usually don't like to reveal my failures BUT there have been many (ha)🤣 . I guess that's my dang arrogance kicking in (ha). You had me chuckling about working on the tailgate. The tailgate has been my work bench for many a repair. Thanks much for remembering other projects in which I've dabbled 🙂. Unfortunately, I have quite a few more forthcoming. Josh, at one time I was a pretty courageous backyard mechanic and now it takes me hours or even days before I can tackle a project without goom-balling it up. I'm going to try my hand at changing-out my front wheel to a 21 inch wheel. The change is for looks only not for performance ability. I also will take a chance at changing-out my stock forks for chrome forks and that too, I know absolutely nothing about but I did sleep at a Holiday Express and watched 7 to 10 front wheel-change CZcams videos 🤣🤣 . Therefore, I am legitimately capable of goom-balling-up another unfaulty item on my ride. Again, these items are "wants", not "needs" for great bike performane.

@houndsmanone4563 Yes our youngest is home for college summer break. Graduates college next year. I rode motorcycle to work today. It was 60 this morning & 85 on my way home. The bike looks great. Sometimes, my mind locks in on something, and I am noticing that when you speed up the video, it is very clear... and that is fantastic! Another LIKE for your video! You are MUCH neater than I would have been on this one!
Thanks Ray. I'm hoping to do some modification work to the front end of my bike. I was always afraid to do any major mods to my bike so as not to void the warranty but the bike is 14 years old, with a tad over 26k miles on it so the front-end mods will be cosmetic and slight performance. Rewatching this and I am brining my bike in for a lot of routine services I had not done of late.... I could do a few of the tasks myself, but I have a number of things I want done that I just cannot do easily without more proper tools (toy!) and such.
Ha, I know exactly what you mean, Ray 😊 . I prefer doing bike work myself but some of the tasks that were once simple now tend to be a challenge either in complexity, or sometimes a physical challenge. My body will not withstand the bending, stooping, and lifting that I enjoyed during my youth. Since my stroke, I've had to re-learn how to manipulate heavy objects in order to support them myself without falling over but that's the beauty of doing the work yourself. Hey there Dave. Yep, I think I'm going to be a bit more diligent checking and changing the bottle jack oil, at least less than every 11 years which apparently was when the last time any oil was put into the bottle jack . 😁 Of course, it didn't register to me to change or even check the jack oil until I found a large amount of leaked oil spewed on my garage floor which didn't make me a happy camper but now my mind is on-track to maintenance. I don't think there is an un-messy way to fill the jack. I like the color scheme on the bike. I took my bike out yesterday for its annual maiden voyage. The carbs got gummed up. Had to trailer it home. Thanks for sharing, Don.
Thanks for the kind comment. Wow, that's a bummer about your carb. My scoot is an 09 Road King Classic and has fuel injection (FI) . That (FI) started in 07, (I think) which eliminated carb gunk-up scenarios for vehicles w/(FI). I don't ride my bike like I used to since my stroke. I decided to wait several years, then I'll give it a try to make sure I regain my riding skills (you can't be too cautious, can you?) Be well, my friend. Don

Hey there Jef. The fluid fill was simple but messy. The actual leak stop was from a good machinist who milled a customed washer to apply more pressure to that rubber seal at the release valve. I'm happy that the bottle jack held up and was able to lift my bike so I could do a little work on it. My skills are limited. You're right, John. The savings was $79-ish bucks if I had gone back to J&S jacks to buy one of their replacement bottle jacks. If this jack I have leaks, I'll buy a $43 bottle jack from O'reilly's and drill new mount holes in the base to mount onto the J&S motorcycle lift. The lift is tremendous but the bottle jack is crap. Apparently, the bottle jack has been an issue with J&S. They must be cheap Chinese knock-offs to lower costs. It was a PITA to put it mildly, ha 🤣. Thanks for stopping by and the support. Hey there Mike. Thanks. So far the bottle jack is still holding up. Such a small piece of equipment seems to be crucial part of the entire lift. I guess that's how so many things are in life. Thanks much, Duane. I've been slowly buying a few items to mod the front-end of my bike. Thanks for the bike comment. It's been a while since I've been riding the roads but I'll be out there once again since the weather has drastically cooled down to comfortable temperatures. Since the making of this vid, I had the valve on the little jack modified to stop the slow pressurized leak. So far it's held up and I have not found puddles of jack oil accumulated under the lift stand. I still keep a sheet of cardboard under the jackstand so that if it does leak, the cardboard will absorb the bulk of oil spill. I cringed when I found oil stains on the concrete garage floor from a prior leak. Have a fine remainder of your week. 👍🏽🤠 9/29/23

Mean Gene,. How ya doing? I've been quite busy clearing a wooded area to pour a 32'x62' slab for a 30'x50' metal building to store more chit! I used my tractor on a lot of the pre-tree cutting but hired a young guy with a big excavator to drop about 50 large pine trees. So far it's been a ball-buster prepping the area for the forms. I hired a cement crew to do the form work and ultimately pour the concrete. I don't have the metal building ordered yet but when I do the company says it will take 30-60 days before the building crew arrives to erect the building. I'll video as much as I can. I'm excited to get a building just to work on my cycle, ATV, tractor, and vehicles. No dull moments around here brother. Hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving; we did. I never got a video about 5 favorite attachments but I'll get it oncce I see some free time. Thanks for stopping in to say hey. I'll catch you on the rebound. Nice job Don. I should probably change the fluid in all of my jacks, I don't even wanna know how old it is. A good friend of mine who recently passed away used to buy, sell, collect, repair and restore old hydraulic jacks. Mostly automotive floor jacks but all types. He suggested the same fluid you used and said if it still leaks a little use ATF instead. It causes the seals to swell apparently.
Nice looking bike. All I ever see around here are matte black baggers, no colors anymore or interesting paint jobs
Bruce, I had never bettled with a bottle jack before but this was my first encounter. I sure would have loved to pick the brain of your friend who collected jacks. He could easily tell what was wrong with a jack simply by it's performance. Sorry to hear that he passed but it sounds like he passed on some worthwhile knowledge about jack oil. I'll remember the ATF. Thanks, you're right, I too se many bikes that seem to be in the all-blacked out mode. I too like a little color. This bike rides like a champ and is truly an iron horse that will git-up and go. I't not a rice-rocket that zips up and down the roads but it's like a locomotive train. It chugs and you know you're straddling tremendous foot pounds of torque. This bike is a 2009 Road King Classic. Though I keep it looking and running like new, it's considered somewhat of a dinosaur compared to these newer module-component bikes today. Sometimes it worries me when a young bike mechanic lays hands on my bike b/c they're only trained for the new module-component bikes. Thanks for stopping in and watching. Take it easy Bruce. Thanks Kate. I so appreciate your kind words. I really don't have the skills you mention. I can tinker with things but have not mastered any skill proficiently enough to be considered proficient. Things have only gotten worse since I had a stroke. Now, the simplest of things prove to be a major task. So learn from me and take care of your health. As my mom would say when I was in my teens, "health is wealth" and she certainly was/is right. When is your next adventure? You and Tig have traveled to many parts of the world that I would love to explore. Thanks for watching my video and I look forward to seeing you guys do more traveling. Hey there brother. I'm okay. ILately, I've been out clearing a tiny portion of my land so that I can eventually pour a concrete slab foundation for a metal workshop. I hope to have the building/garage erected by March 2024. Of course, like other things, money is the key factor. I've made a few videos of outdoor projects but haven't gotten off my duff to publish anything yet. Thanks so much for checking in on me. I hope you're doing well. We just finished a long stint of triple-digit heat which kept me inside most days. It's finally somewht cooler weather the past few days so that's when I can get a few outdoor chores accomplished. Kenny, since the leak in the pump was fixed, there has been no leakage. It took a better screw-type valve to stop the pin-hole leakage. Man, I sure hated walking onto the garage just to find a puddle of oil on our concrete floor. Our house is still fairly new and we hate it to get boogered-up because of some leaking jack-pump. So I don't have to replace the cylinder on my J&S jack.
Matthew, I got my bottle jack to work for a short while then eventually modified the valve screw that regulates the fluid flow into/out of the jack cylinder. Since that modification, the fluid holds under pressure. It will be a year next month. Bottom line, a replacement cylinder would be necesary. If I had to buy one, I found a bottle jack at O'Reilly's that could fit in the J&S lift w/o too much modification. The J&S motorcycle lift is great product but their bottle jack is the weak link and I don't think you can get anything from J&S any longer. Though J&S claimed their motorcycle lift was USA made, it may have been but I think the bottle jacks they used were from China (just my opinion). I'll have to check and see if I can find which bottle jack O'Reilly's was selling that could replace the J&S bottle jack cylinder but right now, I'm still using the jack that I showed in the video.
Matthew, i was rummaging around and found the bottle jack that I mentioned could easily replace the original J&S bottle jack that came with the J&S motorcycle lift. The bottle jack can be purchased at O'Reilly's Auto store for much less than what J&S charges for their bottle jack. Here's a part number and a link for the bottle jack from O'Reilly's that should fit the J&S motorcycle lift. Part Number: PT34126.

I'm now about to replace the stock forks with chrome fork lowers, change the 16" stock front wheel with a 21" chrome/gold spoked wheel, and change the cans to match my new tail pipe end caps.
