  • Incredible Ruth Stout Potato Harvest - Bigger than Ever! | Year 4
    In our 4th year growing Ruth Stout Method potatoes, we see a return to fantastic potato production. This year, we grew Yellow Finn potatoes, Yukon Gold potatoes, Charlotte potatoes, and even some mega chip potatoes and purple magic molly potatoes.
    The key this year was that, unlike in years past, we added no additional soil to the potatoes at time of planting, so we just grew these in decomposing hay. The nice thing, though, is that the bottom most layer of this hay has been decomposing for up to four years, so it has become an amazing growing medium.
    The potatoes that we grew this year turned out to be great growers, and the vole damage that we had was minimal, meaning that our yield was fantastic! I would even argue that a few of the potatoes were the biggest potatoes we have grown in a Ruth Stout bed.
    We are really pleased with this Ruth Stout potato harvest 2023, and we hope you give deep mulch gardening a try.
    Thank you for watching this 2023 potato harvest video!

    This harvest was worth the wait. ❤ Love how the cheapest, least effort method produces such a great harvest.

      It really is amazing what can be grown in this hat, and the critters really had little impact this year to that bed.

      @GutenGardening you took a lot of precautions this year. Maybe having a cat could be of benefit as well. I really can't wait to see next year's harvest. I would love a bit more focus on the grapes if possible. I have basically no knowledge on that. My first planting died, and I have no idea why. Second planting was devoured by my dogs. Now I have finally enclosed my new garden section, and I am building a similar pergola effect. Pruning is apparently very important. I am genuinely not kidding. Food prices are going insane in South Africa. My garden used to be my hobby and sort of rehab when I stopped drinking. Now, I really need to level up. It is getting harder to provide my family all the quality they deserve.

    Wow, another nice haul! My daughter sold off the rest of our chickens while I was away. I'm planning on turning their run into a garden now. Lots of chopped straw in the ground, too.

    Thanks for the videos. Just watched your indoor grow from a couple of years ago, and am trying it this year in a 5x5 tent with spyder farmer led's. Love the idea of growing inside in the winter (zone 8a, desert sw, so it still gets a bit too cold here for most fun stuff to grow outside) because the heat generated by the use of the high wattage lights, fans, heat mats, etc, offsets the amount of heat my heater has to put out to heat the whole house. Then I get high dollar food on top of that. The best thing is, I can cool my garage in the SUMMER using the same idea. Move the tent into the garage, have a swamp cooler blow directly into the tent, and the exhaust air exits into the garage and would cool be about 75-80f. It's 105f w/intense sun here for three months, so tomatoes and such can't really be grown easily outside (compared to a tent). Win win, because I run the swamp cooler anyway.

    We have southern short tailed shrews (took awhile to id) at my location in WI, terrible things. Good harvest!

    I have Some areas where I am composting guinea pig bedding and hay. I may try growing potatoes in it next year and see what happens.

    It's been a while since I read Ruth Stout's book, Gardening Without Work, but I do remember her mention of adding cotton seed meal, or similar, as an amendment. Nonetheless, nice job!

    Love your channel! I have watched it a lot over the past few years. Hope you are staying well and warm with this recent winter storm. As a zone 5 channel (I am in zone 5 in elm grove 😊) I was wondering if you had any interest in doing a video about how this recent snow dump and deep freeze can affect our spring gardens? I’d be very interested! I specifically love your channel because you are in my zone and you give amazing advice. Ps- took your potato advice and last year my harvest was great! I did red white and blue potatoes as well. ❤

    Advantage to growing in hay over straw?🤔

    • @GutenGardening
      @GutenGardening  Před 9 měsíci

      Mostly cost from what we have found. Around here it is about 3 times more expensive to get ahold of straw. In this type of bed we really haven’t had much trouble with weeds at all.
