    My first time I got 6 quail eggs and only 1 hatched the rest were infertile! I named him happy feet lol ( he is now 5 1/2 weeks old ). This time I ordered 10 and 9 are good. yesterday they were put in lockdown and today they are on day 16 they are rocking a bit, I can't wait for them to hatch.

    quail eggs have a lot less mass than other eggs and leaving the lid off the incubator for that long would have done them no good at all.

    People ( I think) have difficulties with The yellow because the thermometer reader in that incubator only extends a couple of centimetres down, whilst the eggs sit at the bottom. I'm currently incubating quails in one but I've added sawdust so the eggs sit at the same level as the temp reader. Started with 12, 3 weren't fertile 9 developed, but six have since died (bloodlines) and 3 are ok. I candled them today and saw movement, this will be my first time hatching, if the remainder survive there last week.

    You certainly can candle Quail eggs. Terry over on the Coturnix Corner channel, also debunked this without intending to actually do a debunk. He just showed how to candle them and if it's empty/infertile and if there is an air sack and dark inside. Sometimes you can even see veins, etc.

    Hi, my first time incubating quail eggs. Today was day 20 and none had hatched.(I got them packed on the market, for eating not hatching) as it was day 20 I thought nothing would happen now. I opened one of the eggs and there was a live fully formed chick. I’m devastated! I put the rest back in the incubator which is the same one you put yours in on lockdown. Hopefully I haven’t killed the others. How long should I leave them for?

    How long should freshly hatched quail stay in the incubator?

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  Před 4 lety +4

      Personally, I don't hatch many quail. But normally it's until all eggs have hatched (to avoid drying out the membrane from pipped ones), or 24 hours for quail I believe, or if they've all hatched, its when they are dry and fluffy. Hope that helps :)

    • @pirelo5935
      @pirelo5935 Před 4 lety +1

      I was reading up on this and some people said u have to wait 12 hours with the quail eggs a 65 to 70 degree (f) before moving them to the incubator is this true?

      It’s an unrelated question but I’d like to hear ur answer

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  Před 4 lety +3

      Personally, and the same applies to chickens, duck and geese as well....
      If all the eggs have hatched, the chicks are dry and fluffy, and the brooder is up to temp, then there is no reason not to move them. I have no issue opening an incubator, if everything has hatched, and the chicks are dry. If they are wet, then wait, but I can't see why say 12 hours? Maybe thats just personal opinion?

    • @pirelo5935
      @pirelo5935 Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks but the second question was actually unrelated and was asking about how the eggs should be delt with upon arrival in the mail. Some say to wait 12 hours before placing them in an incubator but this sounds ridiculous but is this true?

  • @barnbersonol

    How much is ths initial investment in the incubator and other bits of kit?

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  Před 4 lety

      That really depends on how much you want to spend. You can get cheap automatic incubators for £20 from Amazon, or you pay £200 and get a decent one.
      Then there is the heat lamps, and brooder, which can be another £40 to £50.

    • @barnbersonol
      @barnbersonol Před 4 lety

      @@AnnoyDad Thanks. Surely then you're better off just buying adult quail and saving all the hassle??

    • @AnnoyDad
      @AnnoyDad  Před 4 lety +1

      That all depends on what you want to do. Some people like to hatch their own, and then they know the bloodlines, age of the birds, health of the birds etc
      The other way to look at it, is once you've bought all the gear, its then yours for years to come, and most holds its value.
      Personally, I like to hatch my own.

      That's up to you, and where you live, depending on the relative humidity. Normally, placing in enough that it does not all evaporate after 3 days is a rough guide on what I work.
