    This is the kinda instruction video I enjoy watching and learning from. This is obviously a fella who knows what the the heck he's talking about, and spouted this whole video commentary off the top of his head, rather than reading it off of cue cards. Thank you for your time and effort in helping others learn about something that not many peeps know a lot about. I feel very well informed about raising quail after watching this.

    just starting out. quail are at 4 weeks old. what is your take on selling locally to the community? I asked my local pet store if they had game bird feed. they said no but can you breed them for feeders for me. I told a guy at work and he said he buys quail for his bird dog at $5 but drives a hour to get them. do you think if I do things right I can at the very least get my quail to pay for themselves? im afraid of hatching to many out and having a freezer full of quail just for me. I do see a market for it but what is your take? I don't think quail can pay my bills but minor profit unless I do a quail farm lol

    I got five wild quails from a friend in September 2016. they are kept on ground in 7'X5' enclosure that's six feet high. my guess is that they are three females and two males but so far no eggs despite the fact that they have ample space for hiding. they are very skittish and great flyers. Good night, I’m trying to incubate some quail eggs but my incubator which started 4days ago, keeps dropping humidity level even though I keep adding warm water. It’s now 49 and it’s quite full of water at this time. What can I do again to get it increase? Also the auto turner is not turning every two hours, don’t know why but I also know they say if doing it manually you have to turn the eggs at least three times daily, is it okay for the auto turner to just turn them three times also?Thanks in advance.

      What kind of incubator is it? And yes, three times a day will do. To get humidity up try adding a sponge to the tray, you need more surface area of moisture and a protruding sponge will do just that.

    My wife pointed out a quail in our back yard foraging under the bird feeders this is first time we have seen one in the 9 years we have lived in Bucks County, Pa. Is there anything I can do to encourage the quail to return?

    • @richardrobertson1331
      @richardrobertson1331 Před 5 lety

      Ed, quail need shelter from hawks, cats, and a variety of night time critters, so unless adequate shelter is available, you probably won't see quail again for another 9 years. Most of Bucks County is country, so adequate shelter may not be an issue (I went to both Pennysbury and Neshaminy but now live in the west) . Winter kills them if they can't keep dry and warm, another reason for thick, adequate shelter. I raise quail but I "free range" them, and they are so prolific that their numbers are stable, even in my urban environment. A hawk gets two every week and a neighbor's cat gets one every 7 to 10 days, but that's life. I should make a video for you to see my experience since the population seems stable at about 47. They come thru my yard every morning and evening to eat and they bed down mid day. I'll leave a message for you if/when I post that video.

      @@UrbanAviary Not a problem at all. That's what we are all here for, to help one another out when and where needed. I only mentioned them because I had a few quails years and years ago and lost them to a murder of crows before I could do anything about it. It took them all of 20 seconds to take all 20 of them and all the eggs I hadn't collected that morning. After that I put a stronger mesh over the top of their enclosure and didn't lose any from birds, though I did have a couple of red tails try to find a way in and the crows came back around from time to time till my cat started sitting on the enclosure in wait and took out a few of the crows.

    U.A., do you use/recommend medicated feeds ? Thanks for all the info.

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 7 lety +1

      I don't use medicated feeds personally, just because my animals end up as dinner fare and I don't want that stuff in my body. I won't tell you that you shouldn't do it, I'm totally fine with anyone using medicated feed. I just want to pass on good naturally resilient genetics, so I don't use them. My personal believe in doing things as much like nature intended as I can. It's hard to do with small scale operations like this but I do strive to do the best I can. And nature doesn't use medication. But I wouldn't put you down for doing it. You will definitely have less problems with animals getting sick and dying if you go medicated. Hope that helps!

    I watched your videos before getting started with quails. Thanks for all the information and answering my questions. I started with 30 quails (3 day old). 16 of them died mostly within the first week. So sad. Is this a common problem?

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 7 lety +1

      It's common to have that happen the first time around. The most common problem is quail getting wet or getting crushed because they get cold and huddle together in a corner too tight. Don't be too hard on yourself, there's a learning curve to everything.

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 4 lety +1

      That all depends on how well you clean up after them and how you house them. look at my videos on keeping quail in an aquarium, that's my suggestion if you're keeping them in a finished basement.

      You sure can, I hear people complain that they aren't strong enough for chickens and they end up breaking. I imagine it'll be just fine if you don't put them in a place where chickens will be bumping into it constantly.

      +Nick Beam For supplies you can go to urbanaviary.com and click the STORE tab. I put together an Amazon catalog that has a lot of what you might need. How do you want to house them? You can check Craigslist to find chicks and eggs, if not you can email me and tell me where you live and I can find a good breeder that can ship birds or eggs to you.

      Urban Aviary - which quails are best to raise for eating? courtunix, bob white, or pharoh?

    • @UrbanAviary
      @UrbanAviary  Před 7 lety +1

      +Nick Beam Pharoah is just a color variation of Coturnix, same bird. And they are better than Bobwhite for two reasons. Bobwhites only lay seasonally and they don't get to maturity nearly as fast, so they take more feed to get them to slaughter size and don't lay year round like Coturnix.
