    Goes without saying but only Taeyeon can tell us herself WHY or how she's singing how she does, it's all fun speculation on our part but I'd love to hear what YOU hear in her vocal evolution journey too!
    PS I will die on Mezzo hill lkdhsfdiahsoh sorry. If you feel she's a soprano then I'm not mad at you, I just know in the choirs I was in, she would've been chilling with the alto's for sure haha.

      I heard the technique change too, some people said she lost the power on her chest voice but i believe it was by choice to not use it often because when she wants to go there she still hits, she's doing that for longer career and i couldn't be more happier that she's thinking of her future. And honestly she utilized both styles well and still sounded good as ever, matched the songs she sings, so i'm not complaining

      SM has a tendency to try and train mezzos or lower tenors/baritones into practically belting in falsetto and it's made so many of their singers really insecure. Taemin and Key are great examples. It took them fighting tooth and nail for creative freedom in their solos for us to hear Key's powerful dynamics and more kpop vocal coaches talk about Taemin being a trained tenor with some of the best baritone ballads.

    As a song, U R over the years has shown how much she's been able to refine her technique, highlight the variation in her voice, and even incorporate dynamics (which I feel VERY few singers in the industry really take time to master). I feel like she's unlocked even more power and meaning in that song just because she has a stronger vocal toolkit. I have a lot of respect for singers who have taken care of and improved their instrument over so many years because it's so difficult, especially since a lot of girl group songs fight against that and wear down their voices.

    Taeyeon has always been a natural heavy/chesty singer. It's one of the reasons why she made a name for herself at such a young age because her voice was just different from other singers in the industry at that time but that makes it more difficult for her to do higher belts.
    Taeyeon started adding a little lightness in her singing around 2010 but her nasal sound became more prominent when she debuted with TTS during 2012. I guess it's her way to sustain those high belts they gave her to lessen the strain. Nowadays is probably the most nasal she has sounded during her entire career. Taeyeon did say she's more into lighter, airy, R&B vocals right now compared to powerful belting. She's definitely experimenting right now.
    I also noticed a pattern where she becomes lighter and more nasal when she's skinny compared to when she has more weight. It's a pretty great mechanism to prevent huge setbacks on her body I'd say. Taeyeon is pretty aware of her own voice. She's smart and doesn't push herself too much which is why she's never had a time when she hugely regressed.

    • @timorcohen4641
      @timorcohen4641 Před rokem +29

      It's also a matter of taste. Rain wouldn't be half as good if not the nasal tone.
      But when we look at SNSD Long Lasting Love fan meeting she sounded the same as she did before in their older songs like Genie or Forever, no nasal at all, so I think it's a matter of style. People don't notice it because of her chesty approache but she was nasal even back in 2009, now she can control it.
      If we take INVU album you can hear in the different tracks how she switched back and forth

    Taeyeon was an extremely chesty singer in her rookie days ... which is why a lot of people would say she used to sound "more mature". The chestiness made her sound really powerful, but limited her voice a lot and made her very inconsistent with high belted notes, but on her good days it was magnificent .... after the GEE era she started to sound more balanced (although still on the chestier side) and kept the same sound for quite a while until her solo debut. With her solo career it seems to me that she started to take her job as a vocalist much more serious and began thinking in the long run as an artist, as she not only improved her technique but also started trying new styles of singing as her solo repertoire kept diversifying and since it is exhausting for chesty singers with challenging songs like her to sing live for entire concerts she kept getting more heady, but unfortunately also more nasal. However this has increased a lot in the last 3~2 years...this new sound has help her with difficult high notes, as she feel more free and less tight, but has also kept her from sounding as open and resonant as before.

      It's actually funny when people say she is more nasal today when she was way more nasal in the past, you juat didn't realized that because of her chesty approach. Now she can actually control that and it's also a stylistc choice.
      Taeyeon high notes are as open as before and still resonate up to D5. Did you not hear her hight notes in Killing voice and LLL fan meeting?
      I'll not let people that not nothing about vocals to just throw around misinformation.

  • @kledi3817
    @kledi3817 Před rokem +56

    i feel like like apart from singing nasal for cute concepts, she especially does it when phrasing high notes. like when sustaining a note that she can still support, she often opens up more and the note becomes resonant like i believe her C#5 (or maybe it was a C5 i don’t remember rn) in Step Back right before hitting the Eb5-F5 slide. she is still very much able to produce resonance and make these big sounds but only does it for climaxes like these instead of always trying to push this big sound because this can lead to pushiness which she very much did a lot during debut. that D5 in Into The New World was hard for her because she brought her entire chest up but now listen to her D5 in INVU. so easy and nice and not pushed at all. is it nasal? yeah. but much better than pushing your voice too much and thus damaging it.

    I think she already started experimenting with her placement around 2011. The general consensus seems to be during TTS debut in 2012, since that’s the first album/promotion where you can really see it in effect. Which makes it more memorable. All in all, it’s definitely around 23-24 years old.
    You can also mark her solo debut as another step in her progress. She developed and experimented more to cover all the different genres she wants to try and also to sustain through her solo concerts. Honestly, I very much look forward to her future!

    Let's summarize Taeyeon's radio interviews and social media conversations with her fans.
    2014-2015? Recently, I think efforts to make even a little higher notes like when I was young are now almost meaningless.
    2016? I was treated for rhinitis at the hospital and cured completely.
    (Taeyeon seems to have recorded rain, Jeju Island's blue night in 2016 when her rhinitis got worse and her throat condition was not so good, perhaps because of her really unreasonable - almost impossible - schedule or stress.)
    2022: Currently, the nasal sound can be freely adjusted, so it is used only when necessary.
    I don't think Taeyeon's rhinitis treatment or nasal sound control is perfect yet, but it continues to confirm her promise to sing for herself and her fans for a long time.

    You've clocked it. I thought I was the only one who thought Taeyeon was a mezzo-soprano. A lot of people tend to say she's a soprano but in her early days I always thought mezzo. I LOVE her chesty, weighty voice in her early days but as you mentioned, the switch up helps her reach those higher tones which she would have struggled with. Her voice soars now in those upper belts. I like that it has a piercing sound as well.
    I still hear her incorporate that chestiness here and there because her belts are still chesty but bright. I feel like the brightness almost gives her a bigger sound when she belts now. She definitely goes super nasal for the cutesy concepts and some vowels tend to be more nasal. This was a great reaction! You pointed out everything I've been thinking when it comes to Taeyeon's vocals🔥🔥🔥

    That UR note is a stunner. That particular fancam from Busan and the way she sounded in a couple of songs that followed (11:11 & Time Spent Walking Down Memory Lane) were the moment I truly fell in love with Taeyeon's voice. I was more a fan of her as a person before that, and her voice was very hit and miss for me, especially with all the thinning and straining she was going through in few years prior.
    I hope she gets to do another Christmas concert at some point. We don't do Catholic Christmas here and that kind of music is not usually my thing but I surprisingly liked that winter album of hers quite a bit. Still the clips from that concert DVD make me really uncomfortable. It's kind of shocking how great she did keeping the mood festive despite going to that venue straight from 3 days in a funeral hall but having this background knowledge makes the whole thing really unsettling.

    sm has a pattern of training their artists with techniques like this, they start off by teaching their artists to use their diaphragm to belt and usually push their artists to use very full voices, but as they age, and these girls who sing such high notes every day while performing end up hurting thier own voices, they end up teaching the artist to switch their technique to start using. a mixed voice. these girls also lose weight and gain weight and have such irregular schedules, the mixed voice makes up for it and gives them sustenance to keep pushing those high notes meanwhile if she still used her chest voice she would have cracked a lot and it would have done worse in the long run. i think her technique has a lot to do with taeyeon's body well being tbh, in the beginning taeyeon had a lot of energy as a teen and had a full voice but she started using her nasal tone mainly during tts, to hit those notes, but then the most she used it was post 2014, where she did lose A LOT of weight and was very depressed...she is better now and has regulated the use of her nasal tone but the most she used it was when she felt most tired or didn't have the energy to push her chest voice. wendy went through this same journey as well if you notice, during debut her voice is a lot fuller, she over exerted her chest voice and got vocal nodules. when she looks healthy and well fed, her chest voice shines and she has a lot of support but in eras when she went through rapid weight loss like red flavor, you see her start using mixed voice wayy more often...and for her now, she has found a healthy diet and found a healthy way to belt and uses her mixed voice moderately just like taeyeon does. it's just an sm thing honestly, they did it with seohyun, with luna from fx, with jessica, with wendy etc since their artists go through such irregularity in their schedules, they teach their artists to protect their voices by teaching them to mix when hitting high notes, not to mention most kpop gg songs are already pitched very high, so it becomes necessary for many of them.

    Oh they included her Nell cover in this video! Time Spent Walking Through Memories is beautiful. Nell is one of the most iconic bands in Korea and you would love their lead singer, Kim Jong-wan. He's the reason Sungkyu joined Woollim. If you do check them out just a warning - some of their biggest songs are on very sad topics. The Day Before breaks me. It's a farewell to someone who took their life and the mv is about a man who records himself in the place where the man he loves filmed his death and last words and the mc sits in the opposite seat so when the videos are combined it looks like the other man wasn't alone in his final moments. I cry when the end shows only one pair of feet.

    I dont necessarily think that she's a Mezzo Soprano. She's just a thicker sounding soprano. Due to being mostly chest dominant, for most of her singing carrer. And her overall tone in general. I think her not hitting those certain higher notes and belts, etc, with ease is due to an underdeveloped head voice for most of her career and it not being as strong. So,her placement is stronger in her chest/mix, hence why she's able to belt there more comfortably . She's now incorporated the nasal technique more to probably access Her head voice more easily. Her Tessitura gives off soprano to me, as a classically trained singer myself, as well. Her tone is very girly, and light despite having thickness to it ,still even being chesty. Solji from Exid is another example of a darker ,thicker soprano even heaver souding than taeyeon. Sometimes, being able to hit or not hit certain notes isn't the only thing that dictates vocal type. I'm a Contralto but can hit up to a B5, and that's considered "out of range" for one. it may not be as strong as my comfortable tessitura notes, but it's definitely there and audible, and my tone is very dark ,deep, and androgynous. I actually had a very similar start like taeyeon, where I was very chest dominant and mixed dominant ,never accessing my head voice at all. Dispite being a totally different voice type than her, but she is definitely a soprano, just a thicker toned one !🙂 she my ult bais in kpop btw!

      I hear what you’re saying and perspectives will also differ. Emilie (another reactor) who is a mezzo with range watched Taeyeon and suspected her to be a mezzo like her.
      A lot of Mezzo’s have range and compared to other GG members, I don’t think Taeyeon sounds as girly as Jess, Tiff or even Sunny. At the end of the day mezzo is still a soprano so a girly sound is to be expected.
      A thicker sounding soprano to me would still sound more free-er in those higher chest notes like Patti, Lisa Fisher, Aretha, J-hud, Mariah Carey (tho she says she’s a mezzo and I’d agree since her voice is more comfortable around the E5’s but she hits F5’s and G5’s but doesn’t necessarily sing them comfortably consistently) even though they can be chesty at times.
      I’m sure you’re aware also that a lot of mezzo’s can cover soprano roles if needed but it’s more of a work out for them hence why the notes you hit comfortably does play a big factor on what your voice type is and anything above an D5/Eb5 starts to sound much more pushy for Taeyeon in a similar way it does for Jojo and Brandy who I think are very similar her. Infact the 3 of them singing together would sound amazing.

    • @Koko3op
      @Koko3op  Před rokem

      Also, compare Taeyeon to Hyolyn, now there's a girly tone and soprano freedom although I'm sure her upper chest is not much higher than Taeyeon's which makes sense since there's only a couple notes difference between the two voice types anyway. She's also chesty and has lows which are more developed than Taeyeon's but I'd still classify her as a soprano.

    Disagree on the Mezzo part, sorry hehe 🤭. A Mezzo will never be able to produce this kind of bright and light notes (like in Weekend). she a Soprano with a well developed lower range, which is also a new thing from the last few years. Untill 2015 she couldn't support anything below A3, it's only in the past 3 years she is able to support F#3

    • @Koko3op
      @Koko3op  Před rokem +2

      Haha it’s all good. Mezzo is the most common female vocal type so there’s probably millions that can do weekend lool. I think there’s a huge misunderstanding of what a mezzo is, maybe people mistake it for contralto’s that have heavier darker sounds like Annie Lennox but Taeyeon is definitely a mezzo that’s learnt a great mix to reach upper chest notes nicely.

Directly from wikipedia. Articles that mention Soprano are probably including mezzo's and are splitting the main 4 types, Soprano, Contralto, Tenor & Baritone.
