thx for this explanation. I was, since 2010, always wondering how they get such a fat sound, most of all on the new album (This Ladder is ours). Always thought they had a second studio guitarist! ;)
Exactly... even though what they're playing sometimes appears simple, there's a reason you don't see many (any?) TJF covers out there besides, maybe, a heavy abacus. Not saying it can't be one but some people get the wrong idea of what they're doing
Far and away my favorite new band (new to me, as of a week ago). Dude i got the hook up, sick ass 03' Nissan Sentra fully loaded w/ Power Windows, Air Conditioning, fuckin AUX hook up!!! Think she'd go for me!? While i'm at it, @theantfish is correct, it's done w/ distorted tuning and looping, izz all good, the White Stripes do it all the time, Smashing Pumpkins, blah blah blah, most of em do it. It's a pain in the ass and what makes them incredibly good at what they do. It's not easy.
@MCPOWest This is the greatest, most real Rock band to come around, since the nineties! Rocks new messiah! A mix of the Cure, Nirvana, The Pixies, The cranberries, etc. Ritzy Brian is the second coming of Kurt Cobain, bringing the best of all that has come before, with their own talented, evolutionary twist! The Joy Formidable all day! The only current band that matters!
@theantfish it's all done with live looping, so she plays something in, and triggers it on and off at certain points in the song. The bass player is playing parts of the guitar part at the same time as the low notes, so what you think is a backing track is actually the whole point of what they've tried to achieve! Anyone who has tried to write music around loop pedals will understand how difficult it is to do well, this band are destroying everyone else.
The Joy Formidable use backing tracks. That's fact. I love The Joy Formidable (seen them twice live) and I don't mind the fact that they use backing tracks but people trying to cover it up make it look pathetic. Stop that.
Some of my absolute favorite songs are played by novice guitarists. Most classic punk for example. You can have all the technical acumen in the world and still play with about as much feeling as The Terminator. Ritzy isn't the most skilled of guitarists but she plays with Alot of feeling. Their live shows are some of the more powerful ones I've ever been too.
I was just making the point that the majority of the weird sounds coming at you is the result of the way they're using pedals. fact. yes there is some use of backing tracks, but I think it's pretty obvious when they're going. They're not 'cheating' with guitar overdubs. The main hook in this could be a prerecorded loop on a pedal, set off live. I've since worked out that they're using clicks and have introduced more BT stuff live, but anyway I wasn't attempting a coverup... Whatever, great band
blahblahblah yes, I am mr technical - Thanks, I pay attention. At least I try to understand what drives people to make music in new and interesting ways. And as you clearly understand, anonymity gives me the right to piss into the ocean of youtube comments with the most enlightening and patronizing tones I can muster. If the only value you place on music is whether a band can play fast, complicated, or skillful parts, then you have missed out on about 50% of the point of music. Bad luck.
I love you The Joy Formidable
i dig this chick's voice. their sound is perfect.
Enchantment beyond measure.
This band puts on the best live show since The Who.
I love them.

Whether ritzy is an expert guitarist or not... This song - and this band - kicks ass
I really like the sound (dry, clean and with pop). It's sounds closer to Rush's Moving Pictures

Where... the fuck.... Is his... Jaguar Bass. it makes that band. its set louder or something but without it they are missing a big part of thier music
The most compelling part of the performance is ruined by the cameraman's obvious crush on the drummer. Drag.
I love you The Joy Formidable
