Today I'm taking you up to a family restaurant in the beautiful Northern Thai region of Chiang Rai to try the most tender chucks of beef that you're going to find in you're khao soi or nam ngiao in all of Thailand.
Khao Soi Thao Gae Ek (ข้าวซอยเฒ่าแก่เอก วัดพระแก้ว เชียงราย) specialises in Northern Thai classics and for me, it's worth flying to Chiang Rai just to eat here. We ordered khao soi with chicken, khao soi beef, khanom jeen nam ngiao, sai ua, chicken wings and drinks and the whole bill came to 590 THB.
Of course I had to follow that up with a coffee and I found you an incredible farm to stall coffee stand.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this CZcams channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!
#thailand2023 #thaistreetfood #chiangraic
Think I like Chiang Rai more than Chiang Mai, it all in the coffee. You are torturing me Gary, I am craving some real Thailand food sitting in Austin Texas. Everything looks so delicious.
Coffee scene is a joke up here Thomas. I could have spent a month drinking in a different spot every day
Looks fantastic ❤
FYI ….Shan means Tai/Thai in Burmese language. Shan is a transliteration of the word of “Siam/Siem/Sian” to Burmese’s pronunciation ka.
Will be going to Chiang Rai for the first time in January. Thanks for the tips!!!
Have fun Johanna, we loved it
I don't need smell-o-vision to know how great the smells and tastes are in the khao soi place. Those sai ua look really tempting as well. As for that hotel, if I can ever convince Carol to come to Thailand with me, that's a place I would definitely stay, and the room price you mentioned would be cheap almost anywhere here in the US. So glad that you're back there, makes my day every time you share another video.
Thanks!
Wow thank you so much Marietta!!!!
@@theroamingcook you’re welcome Gary 😊
Wow ! That chunk of beef in Khao Soi is to die for. Chiang Rai is well known for the best Sai Oua. I love Sai Oua at Wannapa Shop near The Clock Tower in the city center. I always buy it a lot back home every time I've been in Chiang Rai. It's the best in my opinion.
How cute Nong Carrot was!..his Thai words always melt my heart..
We love watching Finley eat 😅 so cute 🫰🫰🫰 Hope you guys had fun in Chiang Rai 😊
I just love your enthusiasm and presentation skill.
Superb looking food
Unreal mate
Love your channel as it show off the great food of amazing Thailand however they is a lot of meat what about us veggies. Chang Rai as some amazing veggie dishes.. don't forget us veggies. £1 for a coffee which probably 1000x better then Greggs, it same I don't drink coffee been told the coffee in Thailand is amazing .. thank you sharing your amazing food adventures.
Definitely gonna have to take the family to that hotel one day, looks incredible!🔥
It's so good mate honestly
Oh my, all that looks so delicious.
Man that looks good! 😋
So good!
The sai oua sausage is unbelievable. You need to go to a place called ‘tawan wa’ which is unparalleled. Very authentic, northern style.
I’ll definitely check it out mate, thanks for the heads up 🙏
howdy?,really stunning travel! Gary. :)
Thanks mate 🙏
Brilliant stuff mate. It always pays to get off the beaten path and explore. I stumbled into some incredible Isan food in Nan just wandering the streets.
I am in Chiang Rai in Feb - deffo doing this!!
Hi Gary, yummy delish video 😋👍I don`t know who enjoyed the food moore, you or Finnley - you`re def. both foodies ! Fin`s face as he ate the lemon had the most hilarious expression🤩✌The Hotel is an absolutely gorgeous place, just Wow !
Haha yeah I didn’t notice his lime licking until I was editing 😂
Dok Ngew ดอกงิ้ว is the flower from the cotton tree (Bombax ceiba), they put dried Dok Ngew in Nam Ngeow 😄
Love the food in this one Gary, and love the view from the hotel's rooftop bar. The hotel also looks like it would be a convenient location for families coming into town by boat from Thaton (assuming the boat still drops you off at C.R. Pier).
Hiya Gary. Lovely to see Helen and Finley.
A Lovely family meal out.
Nice sponsor. Lovely Hotel.
Love hearing Finley asking questions. Kids are the best.
You always make me feel hungry.
You are not a weirdo. You're passionate.
Liked. Shared. Always.
Where is the link for the new channel? Asking for a friend. 555
Loved that vid Gary! Cant wait to try that myself one day soon. Whats the link to that Hotel Review channel? Couldnt see it in the description.
Great viewing Gary. Khoa soi is my favourite Thai dish along with moo krob pad kra pow
Look so tasty! There are many interesting places in Chiangrai, most foreigners just only visit the city.
Inspiring Gary!
Thank you!
When I was in Nakhon Si Thammarat in 2011- ish... I was instead given orange bay leaves insteand of lime bai makrood leaves to take home to Norway. Very different smell. Very good. They said it was local🙂
Looks So yumi
Hello from Chiang Rai, Welcome anyway.
Thanks so much, it’s such an amazing part of Thailand

Gotta love Finley❤ He’s just wayyyy too cute!! We’ve never been to Chiang Rai before and it now on our bucket list just for the food factor!!! I just gained 10 pounds just watching this video! Everything you’ve ordered looks ultra yummy & delicious! Thanks for sharing this awesome video Gary! Love it when your beautiful wife, Helen & your adorable son is around 😊 Merry Christmas to you & your beautiful family ❤🎄🎉🥳
Everything is delicious 🎉 Off course 😂😂❤❤

The Roaming Traveler , your new channel name idea...
Yummy 🤤
I think Khao Soi means crispy Noodles with other ingredients. So similar to Burmese "Khauk Sweh" which is fried or soup noodles. Very simple languages
Gary, if your link to The Reverie is monetized; I just try to input dates on their website and it does not work. Also, input the number of adults is not working as well.
Thanks Laura, I’ve let them know. The link isn’t monetized though so maybe try Agoda, we always find them to be cheapest in Thailand Check out The Riverie by Katathani (SHA Extra Plus) on Agoda:

Ok. Thanks. @@theroamingcook
Hello, I have followed you. I want you to bring your son to make clips every time. I like children. Your son is cute. Look, he's a cute kid. It's not a big deal, it's easy to eat, it's easy to live, it's not stubborn. I like watching when you eat. You're so cute.
Go 15dec to chang rai
Hi Gary, my wife and I are coming to Bangkok next week for work. We will be based out of Bangkok for couple months. As one of your fan, we would love to invite you and your family out to Korean BBQ in Bangkok. As Korean we love introducing people to Korean cuisine. Let me know if you are open to such dinner.
Another question, do you still give food tours in Bangkok? If so, how do we sign up for such tour?
I would love that! Are you on instagram or facebook? You can send me a message there
Hi Gary, Do crispy noodles are dry and cooked in water then fried? Or they took fresh noodles to deep fried directly?
That first restaurant looked the business the real McCoy.
whats the name of the new channel Gary ? Thank you
We haven't decided yet Stu but open to suggestions!

Liked
Oh, Finn called you Gary XD
I predicted that Chiang rai will be Singapore on steroid within the next 20 years because it'll become business hub for this region along with rich cultural values. If anything I think it's worth considering this possibility and invest in a chance to come here every now and then.
He’s enjoyed with chicken wings 😂
😂😂😂😂
I don’t want to sound biased, but Shan style is the best 😊
Forget about the style just Shan food in general 😊
Could someone tell me the price in UK of the similar coffee that Gary drank in Chiangrai, please. (He said a pound twice)
£3.50 or 160 baht but it wouldn’t have been this good
@@theroamingcook Thank you
❤❤❤❤❤
You've slimmed down right?
If you wanna see really local ingredient stuff you should try going to to the border market in the early morning like 5 am.
"กาดกองเก่าเชียงของ" is what I went to or even "ตลาดเช้าเชียงของ"
Just a suggestion😆 love your videos. Thank you for enjoying our country so much.
