Zeke had a theory about the worm in the anime, he said it was the origin of life. We know the worm (it does have a name, "source of all living matter") is what gave Ymir power, Eldians during when Eren lived could turn into titans not because they are Eldians, but because they are descendants of Ymir and their ancestors ate parts of Ymir, which gave them the connection. The worm was never indicated to be dead or gone, so the extra ending does make sense especially if the message is to say that conflicts never end, with or without the power of titans.

  • @THEDIVISIONbythedivisionbell

The bonus ending is a simple reminder that no matter how much you struggle, war and conflict will always return at one point

Also proves that Eren had no idea what would happen After his death, and that he learned of his death only After coming into contact with Ymir.
And most of all, like the Attack titan time Power, It shows how their world Is deterministic in nature, and there Is no free Will. And also how Life is made to repeat in cicle, since Evolution works in hindsight It has to make lot of things different and test out things, and then see what works with a crash test alias war. I think the author specifically chose this ending to express this idea on the real world, and to Say how much fantasy "Eren godking of Eldians" Is not realistic in the sense that It would be Cool, but that Is not how Life works. There Is no arrival to a perfect world were everything works, becouse Life Needs to test and invent, so It eventually leads to problem but It Is also what allows Life to endure and progress.
It also points out how there are social behaviors specifically designed to work as a species to repeat this cicle, this meant to work no matter what and also to make It impossible for anyone in a species to end Life. One of this social behaviors, while they are hard to point out, Is hate for other political groups, masses general idea on a situation/concept, and crap like racism but not exactly. It Is a bunch of things that as a species make Evolution work, but It also makes horrible Shit like wars exist.

    Here's my understanding:
While Kruger and Grisha could see Eren's future memories (even though they really only saw what Eren allowed them to see), none of them would be able to see past Eren's death because his death also marks the death of Ymir's Founding Titan, severing their connection through the paths. No more paths means no more future memory inheritance and no more Subjects of Ymir. Every Eldian has reverted back to humans with no dormant Titan abilities.
Now we have this kid in the future, let's call him Marco for now. If he comes into contact with the new Hallucigenia, this will create a new Founding Titan and a new coordinate (the point where the paths connect). From then on his future descendants wouldn't be "Subjects of Ymir," they would be "Subjects of Marco," a new line of Titans connected to him just like the previous line were all connected to Ymir. Thanks to Mikasa, this kid has no connection at all to Eren or Ymir. Without this connection it's impossible for Eren see this kid's future memories.

The 2000 years history of Attack on Titan can be viewed as Founder's Ymir personal struggle to overcome her Stockholm Syndrome (A real mental struggle where the captors fell in love with the kidnappers). She knows she is supposed to hate King Fritz who burned down her village, killed her family, enslaved and torture her. But being born and living the life she had, she still yearned for love and unfortunately fell for the worst man possible. OVERSIMPLICATION yes but you get the main gist. She is struggling and wants to be free from her obsession.
About Eren, Ymir is the only one with the power to decide what happens with the Titan's power. Even in the episode "From you, 2000 years ago" Eren only prompted Ymir's to decide. However, like Eren said, he is powerless from this, as the Attack Titan he can see and experience the past, present and future all at the same time, he had tried to look for alternative solutions but the vision of the future just WOULD NOT change. (See Eren's convo with Armin) He didn't wanna go through with the Rumbling (His personal struggle and monologue in the previous movie) but he had very little choice, his only way is to move forward, he is A SLAVE OF FREEDOM.
Re: Eren blaming himself for directing Dina towards mom. What people need to understand is AoT's story is a fixed single timeline and cannot have TIME PARADOX. What happened has happened, THE PAST CANNOT CHANGE. Actually in that moment in time (mom gets eaten), Eren was neither the Attack Titan (Dad) nor Founding Titan(Freya). Future Eren can only speak to previous inheritors of Attack Titan (Dad) who was busy stealing Founding's power (He HAD to make his dad do it because that already happened, that is the only way he get founding powers and the only way he could see into the past). Future Eren couldn't do anything in a larger scale of things because it is a paradox. (If Eren asked dad to save his mom, mom didn't get eaten, Eren wouldn't become the Attack/Founding Titan and wouldn't see this memory and couldn't ask dad to save mom; It's a PARADOX; if he sees this memory then his mom has already been eaten), he is just watching it happen, powerless and can only blames himself. As Historia said: this is not Eren's choice, it's the consequence of everybody's action that caused the Rumbling. If the wall was never broken, mom never eaten, Eren never got Founding Power, Rumbling wouldn't happen. Imagine being Eren, you get to see all past, present and future at the same time but everything is set in stone, he can't change anything, he can only move forwards and see how the story plays out
About Mikasa, she is the real person Ymir was waiting for all these while because Ymir sees herself in Mikasa. The "Runaway story" is like Infinite Tsukiyomi, it is only a VISION/DREAM of a possible future, the viewer experience it fully but it never happened in reality nor there is another timeline. Mikasa was presented with 2 scenarios 1) Give up on saving humanity and runaway with Eren, but this way Ymir continue to be a slave to King Fritz, Titan power remains and continue to terrorize humanity 2) Refuse to give up on humanity and sacrifice her love (she can still love Eren nonetheless), and Ymir can finally be free of Fritz command and choose to remove Titan Power from this world. Mikasa was able to influence Ymir to make the decision to be free from King Fritz. Hence in Ymir's vision she chose not to protect King Fritz (this is only symbolism, the past didn't change, only showing the change of Ymir's heart, once again, THE PAST CANNOT CHANGE)
The whole conversation between Armin and Zeke is basically a discussion about nihilism thinking that basically says "what's the point of living if all things eventually die, why does anything matter if everything comes to an end/dies" To the fans who think "AoT's ending is meaningless because war and conflict continues anyway" -Your thinking is very much like Zeke - "what's the point of living if everyone dies? what's the point of peace if conflict perpetuate?" try to think of it this way - Zeke asked Armin "Why do you wanna go back to fight so much if everything's gonna die anyway? " and Armin/Isayama said to him "Every small moment and happiness in life is worth living, even though all good things come to an end" This is also why AoT and Isayama didn't choose to go with the EUTHANIZATION plan, because all lives born is free, there will be good things that happen to them, and we shouldn't take this away from them. MANY people missed this but THIS is also a BRILLIANT 4th wall break homage saying THANK YOU to the readers - "Even if AoT is about to end, every moment that we (Isayama and fans) shared together was WORTH IT"
The Ending/Conclusion of Attack on Titan is spoke through Levi's monologue = the sacrifice of the hearts of the scout regimen was to reach this place - "A WORLD WITHOUT TITAN". This brings the whole AoT story to a FULL CIRCLE. It might not feel satisfying for some but it is a SUITABLE Ending consistent and come back to its origin - "Getting Rid of Titans from this world". Isayama didn't set out to provide a solution for human conflict, what he did was only pointing out through Pixis and Erwin that "human conflict will never end until there's only 1 man remain." He emphasized it once again through the end credits shots - nor matter what happens, human conflict never ends. Even if the Rumbling was complete, Paradis will still fight a civil war, even if Paradis was wiped out, the human remain will continue fighting".
However to say this ending is MEANINGLESS was a misinterpretation, the whole discussion on the boat with Historia's letter is designed to specifically answer this - the scouts shall continue to fight in a world without titan, and they shall always fight for peace - Armin: "they will want to hear our story, how we used to fight as enemies have now come together to advocate for peace" This can be viewed as another 4th wall break talking about Attack On Titan, a story about conflict, about human cruelty, about war, about racism, despite EVERYTHING that happened, the ending comes down to both sides reconciling, advocating for peace and working for a better future.
Now for the end credits where we see paradis getting destryed eventually and people mistake it as it was all for nothing but its wrong, eren always knew that the cycle of hate, war and conflict would never end but his actions did bought a peace of atleast 500-1000 years (the buildings looks so futuristic) eren his achieve his goal that was so at least his friends and people on paradis that he knew get to live a long peacefull life and die a natural death by growing older. After a 1000 years modern war happened and paradis was destroyed. It shows that the conflict and war is a never ending cycle, even if eren killed all 100% of humanity except for eldians, conflict would arise between eldians. it is a never ending cycle, we also saw a person in the end who went inside the tree as in a theory that teh cycle is repeating again just like how ymir went in the tree. So long as humans exist in this world, there will always be war and hate. conflict will only end until we're down to one or less humans. That is the reality of our world.

I agree! Taking away eledians ability to have children is taking away their freedom to be as happiest as they can be. I mean they can always adopt, but its still taking away a freedom which eren promised not to do to his people.
Eren still fulfilled everyone's dream to live in a world without titans. There's nothing anybody can do about humanitys nature to create mindless and meaningless conflict with one another. Look at the united States with our political bs, trump supporters n whatever. Hajime was just being realistic. It would have been too easy to create a happy ending. The only gripes I had with the ending was that the pacing may have been too rushed. Taking out 80 percent of the population should take lil longer than what shown in the manga. I would have liked to see air planes being invented trying to take on Titans but that's just my preferences. The ending was still good with its themes.

And if you think the story was “meaningless” because the cycle will start again, that’s exactly the point of the show. There is no happy ending, there is no true end to conflict or hatred, and so the cycle will always continue. It’s a very bleak ending that leaves people defeated, but that’s exactly it’s point: the cycle of hatred is forever ongoing and war will always take place

@@Vizzy.787That was my initial thought as well - but now I think that actually adds to the value of the ending. The show consistently portrays both the marleyan and eldian sides as victims of circumstance, with both sides having committed sins and their descendants now fighting because they feel the other side is their enemy. This comes to a head when the alliance wins and it seems like hey it’s all over - which the extra pages abruptly take away by showing us that yeah they tried and possibly had peaceful lives but humanity doesn’t change, war is going to break out again, and there are going to be more victims of circumstance. I’m actually a fan of this ending as we get both the happy ending for our characters and an overall realistic ending.
My only gripe is that eren should’ve done the rumbling with full intention of finishing it, as a means of showing his belief that war never ends until one side is destroyed, and so being proven right in the end, instead of that whole making the alliance the heroes narrative because that just cheapens his character

The new founding powers implied by that manga panel would be unrelated to Eren. Ymir found her titan parasite in a tree just like that but not her nor any other Eldian were able to see any memories predating the founder.
The memories are only passed down through bloodlines, just like titan powers. Each tree containing a titan parasite is quite likely a bookend on its own titan realm and titan bloodline, and its very much possible that there were titans before Ymir but the same thing that happened to Eren also happened to that founder which you can infer by Erens burial tree turning into a titan tree.
Eren couldn't see that because there were no remaining titan powers within the eldian bloodline, Ymir's version of the titan realm was erased, and that tree contains a fresh iteration of the power.

There are like 4 ways to read that scene, that keep changing as the story goes on. Honestly insane.
Anyway, CZcams doesn't let people put link anymore, I belive you can find It by searching "Eren Is (not) free" or something like that.
It also explains Eren saying that he would have done It either way, even if the Eldians weren't in danger, explaining Just how much Eren wanted to be a shounen main character. It doesn't make sense said like this, but It does with a side story made by author explained in the video, which gives a new light to Eren character. Basically the story Is aot characters in modern world, everyone Is free and there Is no Wall, but Eren is not Happy. Analyzing he story explain why he Isn't Happy, and It also explains why he would have Always done what he did.

Have you even read the same story lol. You may like or hate the ending, but this right here is directly explained in the late chapters of the manga. Titan powers came into existence by the power of the hallucigenia BECAUSE OF Ymir's personal wish/ personality/trauma. The hallucigenia just gives great power to its host, and the form of that power depends on the host. For Ymir it was the Founder Titan, but we don't know what could be for the kid at the end. I'm not going to get into what the tree at the end represents, I think it's pretty obvious, but it's truly beyond me how so many people interpret it as "so titan are coming back" 💀
Also, Eren made sure to give his beloved ones a peaceful, long happy life before he died. That was his goal. He knew he couldn't eradicate the conflict forever and save every eldian on paradis, he knew he couldn't change human nature. This is also beyond me, that people think Eren failed and accomplished nothing. He literally accomplished the one thing he truly desired; long, peaceful and happy lifes for his friends. With Eren's death, the curse of the titans ended, along with the Founder Titan itself. What's worse is the titan powers would still exist and may be mishandled after some period of time. War never stops. Titans were never the problem from the beginning. Even at the time before Ymir turned into a tian, humans still had wars and conflicts. Regardless of the outcome if eren completed the rumbling or not, human will always find conflict.

The extended ending actually make sense and completes the story. Throughout AoT, it is hinted that despite having a common enemy, people will always find a way to fight each other. As long as there is even a slight difference, people would fight.
Eren realized this and decided to save his friends instead of world. He didn't even care if Paradise was destroyed afterwards as long as his friends and comrades live a good life. The extended part shows how there is no escaping the conflict and cycle of hatered will start again and again until there is only a single human alive.
AoT ending isn't like your traditional happy anime ending where everyone lives happily ever after. Its dark and close to reality which might be reason why people refuse to accept it.

All the Jaegerist in the comments be saying that the Rumbling should've been completed. But honestly, the euthanasia plan was so much better, considering that literally 80% of the humans were wiped out despite it not being completed. It's much more humane, still cruel, but so much better for the entire world. I mean, looking at the vast difference of numbers, eradication of the Eldians is just given. But hey, Eren is an Eldian from Paradis, I guess I can't really blame him for the Rumbling. I just think that he had been selfish, only really caring about the people of Paradis and his friends. At least Levi lived, the one person who really stayed true to his ideals.
In relation to the video, I think the ending is depressing yet honestly the best ending there could be. The cycle continues, whether Eren saw it or not.

This was somewhat explained in the anime/manga. That worm that gave Ymir her powers doesn’t necessarily bring the user titan powers. The powers it gives them is in conjunction with their own desires. Ymir’s desire was to survive, stemming from her fear of death (this is from the conversation Zeke has with Armin in the paths dimension). So this doesn’t mean the titans will return, but something else, maybe something worse.

[Eren sees the ending/extended ending where Eldia is not totally safe in the future as he didn't completely finish off the rumbling. Since Eren will know what will happen, he'll try to change that.]

Eren probably just didn’t care. His friends were already dead and they died at a time of peace. Eren would probably be unable to care less about the future because, as that scene of him crying in front of armin shows, he is selfish and just wants him and his friends to be happy no matter the cost (imo)

The ending is all about the cyclical nature of war. You can delay it, but humans fighting is inevitable. The day humans stop figuring is the day there is only one human left

The anime and the Manga are two parallel universes, and I think the writer would change the ending in the anime. Also, if you focus on the episode where Eren was beheaded, we will find Miksa and Armin, who are in the school novel in fleeting flashbacks. This also supports the theory that the anime and the Manga are parallel worlds
This clip explains what I said about Mixa and Armin
