    Time and money saving video. I'm a mechanic and a Mechanical Engineer so I knew it wasn't good when I found the plastic strips in the bellows (before I watched this vid). Uhh, yeah; your diagnosis makes perfect sense. No way I'm replacing parts since, as you say, it's likely that the drum spindle is bent. I might have tried to get a replacement bearing instead of paying $350+ for the back housing but nah, likely that the spindle is toast. Would need shocks, drum housing gasket, springs, belt, etc., etc., and the rear seal doesn't look to be sold separately. Time for a new washer!! Thanks for saving me many hours and the trouble of diagnosing it as I tore it down.

      Agreed! Same circumstance here, when the inner barrel started bouncing around my fist thought was the suspension springs or shock absorbers, but when I got the top and back off those were all okay.... found this video and quickly determined that $400+ for a new outer barrel along with the extended disassembly/reassembly time for a 17-year-old appliance just wasn't worth it.

    I had one of the early Maytag front loaders, and when my newer Whirlpool started making the noise during spin cycle I started panicking. But I watched this video, spun the drum manually and checked around the gasket. There was a quarter coin in the gasket. No repair needed!

    My Whirlpool duet front loader washer was making a huge noise during spin cycle. I had new shocks, belt and motor put on. It still did it. I was ready to order a new one, when I thought about taking the top off and see if I could see anything making the noise. I found there was a plastic tube coming from the bottom of the washer on the left side, that had come loose from the top of the washer. I put it back on and after a wash it came off again. So, this time I used two plastic ties and in two places I used duct tape on it. All is well now! I am so glad I took the top off and discovered this. It would have cost me $700 for a new washer. Scenario. Identified the need for replacing the bearings, did so to the best of our ability. Re-assembled and tested. Bearing themselves seem smooth and the grinding has stopped but now it seems there is slight play still and it seems to knock around the shaft when spinning on high. Almost like a horse gallop sort of knock noise. Was damage done to the shaft when it was run with the bad bearings, causing play? Are the new bearings we installed maybe not seated fully? Any advice appreciated. Thanks,

    At 1:00 you stated that bearings were bad causing the drum to wobble and move around--not always true so viewers should investigate before ordering parts. After watching this video and a few others I decided this must be my problem with my LG washer. It turns out after spending $160 in parts the problem was the spider bracket on the back of the drum was cracked and had to be replaced. I needed the front boot and outter tub seal anyway so it wasn't a total loss. I didn't need to replace the bearings but I guess since I had it all apart and replaced the bearings those parts should be good for a while, I just spend about $80 more than I had to.

    I have a 20+ year old HE3t that just started making a loud knocking noise during the spin on some loads, particularly sheets and blankets. I replaced the 4 shocks and though they were obviously worn out, it did not resolve the problem. If I run an empty load on drain/spin it runs beautifully. Does this sound like a bearing/seal problem?

  • @CNY_AP
    @CNY_AP Před 5 lety

    Mine makes similar noise when I spin it - makes noise when the drum passes certain locations. I thought it was the bearing, but now i'm not so sure and am not going to randomly replace parts (going to replace it, but this might be useful info for someone out there).
    It was not loud, then one day it was very loud (I would expect a failing bearing to get louder over time).
    With the front lower panel and rear panels off, I can see the plastic tub and drum move a LOT when I washed a moderate amount of clothes to test it. I'm surprised the washer did not stop turning for safety. The outer body of the washer was not vibrating though, so perhaps the movements were w/in specs.
    When I spin the drum by hand (and then let go of it), it does not spin evenly, the drum wobbles 1/4".
    But when I try to "wobble" the metal drum "sideways", the plastic tub and metal drum move together - the bearing seems very "tight" (as it should be). When I try to move the pulley in the rear front/back to wobble the bearing, it does not budge at ALL, the bearing seems tight.
    So, I think my drum might be warped (washed a queen sized bed comforter recently - unbalanced, maybe damaged it).
    Perhaps whatever senses an unbalanced load failed, so the washer allowed the unbalanced load to go too fast. I found chunks of the cement balancing weight in the bottom/floor of the washer.

    Hey y'all:
    I just fixed a similar problem. My daughter lost an underwire and it would make a rasping sound during spin for about 5 seconds and usually only on top spin speed. It sounded similar to the sound a playing card makes in the spokes of your bicycle but with metal. The sound was loud and awful!!
    I have not seen this hint anywhere in the appliance blogs so I am sharing my experience.
    First PULL the plug on the electricity!
    It is actually *very* easy to see if something is sitting in the bottom of the outer tub. You need a very bright flashlight or a drop light. Take off the bottom front cover and place the light under the outer tub. It is sort of a cream color so the light shines through. Just like you can't see the spokes on a bicycle when it spins, you can see through the metal tub if you spin it. You should see the heating element just above the drain at the bottom of the tub. In my case, I could also see the underwire very plainly. If you see *anything* other than the heater and its support, you need to remove the heating element. You need a 10 mm wrench to loosen the nut in the middle of the heater. You don't need to remove the nut. Take all of the electrical connections off the heater and pull the temperature sensor out (the thing with the square plug). The temperature sensor just slides out. Since you loosened the heater holder, you can now use a small screwdriver to gently pry the heating element and black gasket out of the tub. The black rubber gasket is squeezed by the nut you loosened. You may have to wiggle the gasket to get it out. Once you have the heating element out, you can reach in and retrieve whatever is resting in there.
    To put it back, gently push the rubber gasket and heating element back into the opening. You will likely have to wiggle it to get it in. Make sure the element went into its "back" support, then just tighten the 10mm nut so the gasket is squeezed gently. Put all the electrical connections back on and put the temperature sensor back in its hole. Put the front cover on and you are done!!
    By the way, remember to plug the washing machine back in!!

I do however have an issue with mine not reaching top speed during the spin cycle. I have adjusted the water levels a bit higher as we have well water. It does reach top speed sometimes with smaller loads but not always. I replaced the main board in this unit and repaired the old board because of poor solder joints. Any adjustment or thoughts as to make this unit reach full speed? Sometime when I switch the speeds switch back and forth and then switch back it will work. Thanks for your help.

    can't you just replace the bearings on the existing rear outer housing?

    • @BiggerDummy
      @BiggerDummy Před 7 lety +7

      I just tore my Duet machine apart for the same issue.
      Apparently Whirlpool don't sell the bearing separately so you need to replace the entire rear outer tub piece and if it has been rubbing on the front outer tub and chewing it up (as in his example with plastic shavings) then you would need to replace the front half of the outer tub too. Throw in the stainless inner basket, a bellows seal (see the black gunk on the one in the video) and a tub gasket and you quickly get to $1200 in parts, plus shipping.
      I'm not a throw away kind of guy (rebuilt my Duet dryer a few months ago) but as soon as the parts are more than 50% the price of a new machine I throw in the towel.
      That stainless basket will make a nice firepit ring though...

    I have a whirlpool duet washer. It worked great for the first 6 months I had it. Then it started to make a horrible screeching sound during the beginning of the spin cycle and at the end of the spin cycle. The middle of the spin cycle was fine. Had a warranty service rep out 2x to look at it. They said that the drawer pedestal it sits on was making the noise. they also tightened something in the back of the machine. Sure enough the screeching went away,,,,at least 80% of it did. We let it go out of frustration, but we also had an issue with once in a while the machine making a very loud rumbling sound during the spin cycle. It sound just like a mac truck going by the house putting on its jake brake. It does not do this all the time, so it is frustrating when I keep reporting this but the service tech never find the cause of it. I just made yet another appointment for a tech to come out and check it out. I do not expect him to find anything again. Any Ideas as to what could cause the washer to make the jake brake sound I mentioned?

      it is not a hard job and there are lots of videos online showing how to do it. You can get replacement bearings for $70 approx, or if it is the spyder arm you should be able to replace the drum for free (under warranty). Buying these parts would cost you almost as much as a new machine.

      Yes, they have had issues on some models but they have corrected the issue. All manufacturers have their own issues like the car manufacturers. We have not seen an overwhelming amount of bearings go out within one year. We have found the Whirlpool line being one of the best as far as quality and replacement part pricing. I hope your new unit whatever you replaced it with works well for many years.
